August 2008

On the eve of the Labor Day festivities (big up Brooklyn)….the j.o.b had their annual Hot97 On the Reggae Tip megashow at the Hammerstein. Its consistently one of the best, most energetic, most organic events we do. Anyways, big up to my boy DJ Ness for sending me these clips….

Watch the entire building explode when Wyclef brought out Movado….big big big. It was his first show in the states in a year (resolved visa issues and some dropped charges back home I think).

And just to keep it extra real (think Summer Jam 03), Lil Kim came out and jumped up to the crowd’s delight. I have one word for you…..jangling. (see 1:42 mark) lol.

the homie Swift says….don’t head to the Great Lawn in DC, go here:

And in reference to his political endorsement….last night, Kanye met Obama and had skybox seats at the DNC greekfest ; )

Well, this is good to hear. Jada is looking past that whole piggy bank video and 50 is looking past…hmm, why was he mad again? lol….

Sources say mixtape DJ Robbie Rob helped to get Jadakiss and 50 on the phone together last week. And in this new interview with Thisis5o, Jada mentions that there’s at least a possibility of a musical collabo or at least blogroll link between Thisis50 and the future ThisisJada.com ; )

Also, props to Jadakiss for his annual community basketball tourney in Yonkers.

I’m waiting for 10:15 to see whether this is gonna live up to or exceed all the anticipation***…..But luckily, on the eve on Labor Day Weekend (which I totally forgot about and didnt make any plans for, so will be just a loser during), its time once again Throwback Thursday from Legend at Onsmash (and cosigned by yours truly).

(***note to Howard Dean or whoever….last nights speech from Major Tammy Duckworth gave me chills and made me cry. But some of these guys you sending up there to warm up for Obama are…..not ready, lol.)

Anyways, back to Throwback Thursday…..this week, we revist Doo Wop’s Summer Jam ’96. (props also to Smoking Section, I hear they also had this tape posted a while back) Anyways….in 1996, the actual Summer Jam (not to be confused with the Sinbad tour that was also going on that year) had The Lost Boys, Busta Rhymes, LL, etc…. and Mary J. Blige looked like this:

But this was Doo Wop’s mixtape….

At the end, Fif does his usual s–t-talking but also mentions that he’s trying to help rehab the projects by Baisley Park in South Jamaica, Queens.

Fif refers to what I told you a few months back, about how he donated money to Bette Midler’s park restoration project, specifically Baisley Park.

chainscomeoff

(hilarity!)

I’ve been waiting for this all week….ever since I was asked to squeeze my mind-grapes by the Complex big cheese about chain re-allocation over the years…. thank God it’s Friday, because the round-up is here.

Complex opens up the back of the truck on some classic rap jewel runnings, also rating them on the YungBerg “emasculation”-meter. (5 cornball donkey Bergs means you’ve been left with a ball-gag and designer gladiator sandals on)

Classic quotes from the roundup….

Ice Cube vs Kam and B-Real….

“If you rap on the West Coast, it’s only a matter of time before you grow tired of Ice Cube’s acting skills. First he acted like a gangster, then he acted like he was in the Nation, then he acted like an actor (arguably his best role). Cube’s cousin Kam got tired of dude acting like he was from South Central, and had his homie rob O’Shea of his Westside Connection chain at a party. He then gave the chain to Cypress Hill’s B-Real for a photo opportunity (Real was salty at Cube for acting like he wrote the hook to his Friday soundtrack song “Throw Your Set In The Air,” which Real felt was bitten from his own song of the same name)”

Fat Joe vs. random internet thug…..

“Fat Joe is the realest rapper ever. Ever, ever. Seriously, that guy eats rocks for breakfast. So when Complex heard there was a guy on the internet with a site whyigotit.com where you could, for $10, download a video him telling the story of how he stole Fat Joe’s TS chain. Unfortunately, the dread’s e-commerce game was not on the same level as his robbery game, ’cause when Complex tried to fork over 10 bucks to him we couldn’t get it to work. Consequently, this so-called robbery made as much noise as a tree falling in the forest with no one there to hear it.”

So….can you guys remind me of any other infamous (and not totally bogus) rap chain-snatchings?

Latarian Milton, the legendary kid who stole his grandma’s truck and went on a mini-rampagejackson, is called by number-one-fans Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg this morning. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is probably one of the highlights of Ciph’s life. He is obsessed with that kid, lol.

I totally admit that I laughed out loud as soon as I heard his voice on this audio.

suge knight attack 2
(Suge….this is your past and your future)

Police said the founder of bankrupt Death Row Records was arrested about 6:40 a.m. after officers arrived at the scene of a minor traffic accident and found Knight hitting a woman in a parking lot off a busy thoroughfare.“A citizen sees the beating in a parking lot, police get there fast, they see him beating her. It’s a good solid case,” said Las Vegas police Lt. Chris Carroll.

Police did not release the woman’s name or age, but said she identified herself as Knight’s girlfriend of three years.

“This is a very large man,” Carroll said, estimating his weight at more than twice the woman’s. “He was on top of her, actually in the act of violently beating her when the officers arrived, with the knife in his hand….

as much as it cares about Guns ‘N’ Roses…..

From Reuters:

“Federal officials on Wednesday arrested a man on suspicion of violating copyright laws for placing songs on the Internet from an unreleased album by rock band Guns N’ Roses.

Kevin Cogill, 27, who has no known direct affiliation with Guns N’ Roses, posted nine tracks from the band’s upcoming album “Chinese Democracy” on his Web site, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

um…

(looks out window for g-men… nope, nothing.)

Not like the old days.
