Like every year, the annual Grammy Awards spark debates over victories and artist’s that were snubbed. Alessia Cara, who won ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2018 GRAMMYs on Sunday night (Jan. 28), faced backlash for her victory. The Canadian singer beat out fellow nominees Lil’ Uzi Vert, SZA, Khalid and Julia Michaels, all having a highly-successful breakout year in 2017. While Cara collaborated with Logic and Zedd on big records last year, her breakout smash-hit “Here” and Know It All debut album dropped in 2015. The 21-year-old took to Instagram a day after the GRAMMYs, to address the backlash.
“I didn’t log onto Grammy.com and submit myself. that’s not how it works,” said Cara. “I didn’t ask to be submitted either because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. but I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was kid, not to mention have worked really hard for. I meant everything I said about everyone deserving the same shot. There is a big issue in the industry that perpetuates the idea that an artist’s talent and hard work should take a back seat to popularity and numbers.”
