New Artist Alert

fatkidsbrotha.jpg

FatKidsBrotha, a sub-group in Atlanta’s Two-9 collective made up of IRL brothers Light Skin Mac 11 and Dav.E, have finally released the video for their “Stunt Raps” collaboration with Reese. The video is kinda like what you imagine the song would look like: dark, gothic imagery, typically stoic rap poses and blurry shots, because you have absolutely no excuse to listen to this sober. The track was included on FatKidsBrotha’s Eastside Paradise 2 mixtape, which you should enjoy if you’re a fan of Clipse and The Neptunes.

cozz dreams.jpg

Disclaimer: this might be the hardest shit you’ll hear all year.

It’s not often we cover artists without even so much as a mixtape behind them, but Cozz is a worthy exception. The 20-year-old L.A. rapper makes his debut with “Dreams,” a ferocious, determined and almost desperate account of one man striving for success. From the opening line (“Always had dreams of being rich, huh!”), Cozz commands your attention. He holds it like a vice throughout with his tenacious delivery, melodic undertones and clever punchlines: “N***a, you listen to Casey Veggies/You ain’t about beef.” Meez’s gunshot-laced production packs plenty of punch, but Cozz’ bars refuse to be beaten.

Despite claiming that he’s “not at all” a gangsta rapper, Cozz is up there with Vince Staples and Joey Fatts as one of Cali’s rawest rookies. We’re excited to see what this kid comes with next.

Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa have both helped introduce SaveMoney as one of rap’s most promising new crews. The talent in this Chicago collective runs deep with one of the other bright spots being Caleb James. Today we bring you his new single, the jubilant “Honesty and Loyalty,” which showcases his natural ability to bridge rap and R&B into an accessible product. The track was actually co-produced by his father, Steve Stone Huff, who has worked with The Isley Brothers and spent a brief stint as R. Kelly’s bassist.

Cool dads aside (because he obviously walks that contest), enjoy “Honesty and Loyalty” below and take a listen to Caleb’s The Jones mixtape after that. His follow-up project The Jones 2.0 is due this Spring, featuring production from No I.D., Nez & Rio and more.

Cognitive Dissonance Cover

Raz Simone debuts Cognitive Dissonance: Part One, his first project since singing to Lyor Cohen, Todd Moscowitz and Kevin Liles’ 300 label. At 10 tracks long and with zero guest features, the mixtape is lean but offers a detailed picture of this promising MC from Seattle. Standout tracks “Still Mobbin” and “Natural Resources” display Raz’s knack for crafting raw, emotional songs with melody — the type of music we hope to hear more of in the future.

well$.jpg

I’ll be honest: I had never heard of Well$ prior to seeing his video premiered on Noisey this week. But the kid from Charlotte, NC left a good first impression on me; “Savoir-Faire” goes. With its sludgy riffs, dusty drums and “real n***a, wassup!” ad-lib, it’s a discernible throwback to that ’90s New York aesthetic. But before you mentally file Well$ as just another Golden Age imitator, he has something to say: “Just because you rap over classics don’t mean you say shit.” The fact that his dear old Grandma is wearing Jordans in the video is the only excuse you need to give this a watch.

Stay tuned for Well$’s hilariously-titled project, MTYSD: Revenge of the African Booty Scratcher, coming soon.

lucki ecks boomin.jpg

Lucki Eck$, the gloom trap connoisseur who’s about to be everyone’s new favorite rapper from Chicago, offers the first preview of his upcoming project, ECKISM. Directed by Jimmy Regular, “Boomin'” follows Lucki on a casual stroll down the street while talking on the phone (to a customer? To us? To himself?) before snapping the cell. The hazy visuals and dizzying camerawork help capture Lucki’s unique sound, which is a powerful blend of pensive rhymes, sparse beats and an emotionally cold delivery. Sonically and visually, this kid exists in his own realm.

ECKISM will serve as the follow-up to Lucki Eck$’s impressive 2013 debut, Alternative Trap.

Coming straight out of Houston, songstress Chay$e is way more than just another pretty face. The sultry singer/songwriter describes herself as a “vulnerable, passionate, and humble artist” who aims to uplift and inspire with her tunes. She says: “my journey has not always been easy. I am still discovering my voice daily and sharing with the world my peaks and valleys in life.”

Now, we’re not avid sippers but she’s from Houston so it seems the culture of syrup sipping is in her blood, though, we’re not of the opinion that lean nodding is sexy, haha.

rome fortune

We only recently spotlighted Rome Fortune here on MissInfoTV, but he’s grown on us quickly. After previewing the synth-swabbing, drum-clattering “I Was On One, I Can’t Lie,” the rising ATLien delivers his eagerly awaited Beautiful Pimp II mixtape in full today. It’s the sequel to last year’s Beautiful Pimp, his breakout tape which boasted production from a cast of young hitmakers like Childish Major and Dun Deal.

This time around, though, everything is in-house: the production is handled entirely by CitoOnTheBeat while Rome decides against any guest features (aside from his grandfather, who plays vibraphone on five tracks). It’s a bold statement, but one that speaks volumes about his confidence as an artist.

When you hear the pair in action — Rome’s conversationalist rhymes about sex, success and the struggle over Cito’s bellowing beats, which manipulate bass and synthesizers like you’ve never heard — it becomes immediately apparent they made the right decision. All in all, this is a truly refreshing piece of music.

rome fortune

Rome Fortune, who we introduced in our New Artist Alert section last month, serves up the first slice of his forthcoming mixtape, Beautiful Pimp II. Produced by Cito on the Beat, “I Was On One, I Can’t Lie” is Rome at his best; conversational, stream-of-consciousness rhymes (I mean, just look at that title), a keen eye for aesthetics and a delivery that, although slouchy, just seems to glide across the brushstroke synths. Young Thug may be soaking up the spotlight right now, but don’t sleep on this ATLien.

Beautiful Pimp II — the sequel to last year’s original, which co-starred Childish Major, DJ Spinz and Dun Deal — drops Feb. 12.

topaz jones

Without sounding pretentious or clichéd, we’ve had our eye Topaz Jones for a minute here at MissInfo.TV. It was the New Jersey-born, New York-based rapper’s “Coping Mechanism” video (watch below) that really perked our ears. The crisp visuals, hungry delivery and polished, pulsating beat (produced by the man himself) suggested that this kid was pretty good at what he does.

Topaz today follows up with his new free album, The Honeymoon Suite, and once again, he fails to disappoint. Over production from his long-time collaborator and emerging underground star Thelonious Martin, Topaz showcases his youthful energy, songwriting ability and traditional, thoughtful lyricism (“Trying to live, why won’t they let me?/If I made it big, will I be less me?”). Hodgy Beats, MoRuf and Yasmin help out on the 16-track project.

It’s hard to say whether Topaz will blow up like, say, Migos or Young Thug. He may not have that flash-in-a-pan record that could catch on with the masses right now, but he more than makes up for it with diverse artistry, the ability to craft a cohesive project and cool-guy appeal to the females, à la Dom Kennedy (ladies, you’ll love “Mona Lisa Bonet”).

After all, it seems like most of today’s NYC talents are slow-burning breakouts rather than instant sensations (save for that A$AP Rocky guy, of course).
