Fans of the Starz hit television series POWER were glued in on Sunday at the stroke of midnight, as Kendrick Lamar made his acting debut. The Pulitzer prize winner and Grammy Award-winning artist starred in episode 5 of the current fifth season. The episode, titled “Happy Birthday,” featured Lamar playing the role of a drug addict named Laces. In his brief cameos during the new episode, Kendrick stole the show, first trying to sell Kanan (played by 50 Cent) some stolen gift cards before later having a second encounter with Kanan where a firearm was given to the animated Lamar to sell for money.

Prior to the episode airing, Lamar, 50 Cent and POWER creator Courtney A. Kemp spoke about the appearance, which took four years in the making. “What happened was [50 Cent] was like, ‘Kendrick had mentioned he wanted to be on the show,’said Kemp. “And then I got on the phone with Kendrick and said, ‘What do you want to play?’ ‘Cause that’s my favorite thing to ask an actor. ‘What do you want to do that you’ve never done before?’ That’s my favorite question. And then he said, ‘You know, I’d like to play’ — well, he didn’t say ‘drug addict, ‘but he used a different word [laughs]. But so then we created the character Laces.”

“Mo Reala” may not have appeared on Future and Zaytoven’s Beast Mode 2 album (it’s off Zay’s Trap Holizay compilation, which dropped a few weeks earlier), but the song’s accompanying video (directed by Marc Diamond) finds the pair getting in touch with nature. It isn’t just wild beasts they come across in the wilderness, though, but black magic, too.

Wow. Wiz Khalifa x The Alchemist? There’s a collaboration I wasn’t expecting. But given their mutual love of mary jane, I guess it makes sense. For the latest installment in his Craft Singles series, A-L-C laces Wiz with the kind of smoked-out, soul-chopping beat I wish he picked more often. Not least because of the Ferrante & Teicher sample (as flipped by Premo on Jay-Z’s “A Million & One Questions/Rhyme No More”).

“Universal Studios” is available on vinyl via Bandcamp.

Santigold has never confined herself to just one genre, but on her new mixtape (or album, same thing) I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, the Philly native goes full dancehall. Produced by dancehall don and Mixpak Records founder Dre Skull, the 11-track project blends powerful social commentary — from raging against political apathy to rejecting guys who catcall girls on the street — with summery, island vibes.

“The whole point was: These are the issues on my mind right now. Just throw it down. Don’t be too precious about the lyrics,” Santigold tells Pitchfork. “That’s why I called it The Gold Fire Sessions, because it’s a collection of songs from the moment.”
