From one great interview to another. With his new No. 1 album out and available to the masses, Kendrick Lamar is now on a promo run, to discuss anything and everything behind his major-label sophomore LP, To Pimp A Butterfly. Sitting down with MTV News’ Rob Markman in part one of their interview, the TDE MC breaks down records off the album and reveals the project was originally to be titled Tu Pimp A Caterpillar, with TU paying homage to Tupac Shakur.

“That was the original name and they caught it because the abbreviation was Tupac, Tu-P-A-C,” Lamar told MTV. β€œMe changing it to Butterfly, I just really wanted to show the brightness of life and the word pimp has so much aggression and that represents several things. For me, it represents using my celebrity for good. Another reason is, not being pimped by the industry through my celebrity.”

kendrick lamar miss info

Shortly after being announced as the headliner for this year’s Summer Jam, Kendrick Lamar sat down with the Hot 97 morning team earlier today for one of his first interviews since the release of To Pimp a Butterfly. Naturally, K. Dot delved straight into his new album, explaining what the butterfly in the storyline represents and the thinking behind that 2Pac interview, as well as reacting to the overwhelming critical acclaim (give it time before crowning it a “classic,” people).

But perhaps the juiciest tidbit of the conversation is that Kendrick and J. Cole are still looking to release that joint project. Eventually.

blazin-SP

Cookin’ Soul laced Styles P and newcomer Blazin with some incredible ’70s influenced sounds for “True & Living.” Man, I’d love to hear C.S. and SP to do a whole album together. I bet Eskay is probably wildin’ at home off this.
