Fans of the Starz hit television series POWER were glued in on Sunday at the stroke of midnight, as Kendrick Lamar made his acting debut. The Pulitzer prize winner and Grammy Award-winning artist starred in episode 5 of the current fifth season. The episode, titled “Happy Birthday,” featured Lamar playing the role of a drug addict named Laces. In his brief cameos during the new episode, Kendrick stole the show, first trying to sell Kanan (played by 50 Cent) some stolen gift cards before later having a second encounter with Kanan where a firearm was given to the animated Lamar to sell for money.

Prior to the episode airing, Lamar, 50 Cent and POWER creator Courtney A. Kemp spoke about the appearance, which took four years in the making. “What happened was [50 Cent] was like, ‘Kendrick had mentioned he wanted to be on the show,’said Kemp. “And then I got on the phone with Kendrick and said, ‘What do you want to play?’ ‘Cause that’s my favorite thing to ask an actor. ‘What do you want to do that you’ve never done before?’ That’s my favorite question. And then he said, ‘You know, I’d like to play’ — well, he didn’t say ‘drug addict, ‘but he used a different word [laughs]. But so then we created the character Laces.”
