chrisette-michele

Chrisette Michele is responding back to the critics. The R&B singer received plenty of backlash when news broke that she would perform at President Donald Trump’s inauguration ball last Friday (Jan. 20), Michele now returns with the song “No Political Genius.” Serving as the first release off her forthcoming Still American LP.

I am the black song Spike Lee won’t sing, I am the black voice inauguration bells ring,” sings Chrisette on the song’s opening, referring to Spike Lee, who revealed he wouldn’t use the singer’s “Black Girl Magic” song in his Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It. “For John Lewis and Ben Carson, Questlove, Spike Lee, and before them, I won’t divide now. That’s not smart now. God before me, I won’t back down. This is my damn America now,” she later continues.

The song comes after Michele wrote an open letter, explaining why she agreed to perform for Trump. “Today, I hope that Great Moments begin in peaceful & progressive conversation. I am willing to be a bridge,” she wrote. “I don’t mind “These Stones”, if they allow me to be a voice for the voiceless.”
