Things I Love: Joell Ortiz’s “Big Drop” Theory

Off the newly launched semi-beta Joell Ortiz personal blog (props to Mike H)…..
Joell analyzes the curious way that people spread what they think is bad news. We’re all guilty of it from time to time. Sometimes its personal, most of the time its not. Its just….a less than great aspect of human nature. Schadenfreude. Anyways….here’s Joell’s take on being so-called “Dropped”….
“It really fascinates me how much feeling people put into a word. I starting thinking a lot about the word “dropped” recently. A few months ago after my former label mate Bishop Lamont told an interviewer I was, ”dropped” from Aftermath. Very shortly after his interview the news of my being “dropped” was all over the net, announced on the radio and even ended up on the evening news in Puerto Rico. People I hadn’t heard from in years called to express condolences after they heard I got, “dropped”.
A few people in my Mom’s building even taped notes on her door to express there grief over my getting “dropped”. My mom has stood by me throughout my struggle to get a record deal and she is really protective of me so that word “dropped” affected her a lot. She called me crying when she heard I got, “dropped”
I explained to her that I asked to be released and not “dropped” but she kept asking me, “Why are doing this to you” I told her no one was doing anything to me but that word,”dropped” had a grip on her. She is cool now but it was hard talking to her during that time. All cause of a word. I’ve attached two conversations about me where people are using the word ”dropped”. You can hear the emotions and the acting out that goes on around the word.
The first is where the rumor of me being dropped started. It’s the Bishop Lamont interview. During the interview Bishop is asked about me and my situation at Aftermath. Bishop sadly says, “don’t quote me but I think he got dropped.”
If you listen you can hear the mock concern about my being, “dropped” The whole, “I am sorry things didn’t work out” story gets going then Bishop goes on philosophizing on my lack of business savvy while dealing with the big Interscope machine. None of this banter is based in reality but it sounds good. Now By no means am I trying to disrespect Bishop or the interviewer. I’m simply pointing out something we all do. We all put feelings on words then create conversation to justify those feelings.
more of Joell’s blog after the jump
In the next conversation about me and and my being “dropped” the emotions are completely different than the Bishop interview. This conversation takes place Between miss Jones and dj envy from the morning show on hot 97. In this conversation you can clearly hear the contempt with which Miss Jones ridicules me over being, “dropped” You can also hear some anger. All the while Envy plays the role of impartial dj that’s just reporting what he heard. It’s all very entertaining but again, none of it based in reality.
My next example of how we sometimes add emotions to situations and words is based on a conversation I had with my dude Joe Buddens after he was ”dropped” from Def Jam When I spoke to Joe he was wild happy that he got dropped. I actually saw joy and relief in his face as he spoke. Joe chose a different way than most of looking at the situation. He looked at the word, “dropped as opportunity and freedom” That doesn’t make him right, it’s just the way he chooses to look at things.
In the past a few of my friends have accused me of over analyzing things. What do yall think? Am I crazy or do people put way to much meaning into words. please leave comments. Would love to hear from you.
By the way, The reality is pretty simple. I asked to get released because I was told that a few albums had to come out before they could even get close to putting mine out. Dre was kind enough to let me go and we worked out a deal where I will still be part of Detox. I owe them no money and they cut me a nice check for my services thus far on Detox. I am a relevant free agent with offers on the table and have more money from shows, writing and my deal with K1X then any advance I would get from a major label. Most importantly, I have publishing on one of the most important hip hop projects in the history of the genre.
Gotta Love it!”
PS: here was the interview me and Joell did to address those “drop” rumors….which for some reason caused the rapper that Joell disagreed with to then say “Fuck Miss Info” on a freestyle. Smh. (Actually, I share mutual friends with the rapper, and all of them say he’s a really nice talented guy. So that’s a shame.)

That guy missed the boat, he had his little buzz and now its gone. So sad. So sad.
n lol @ putting dropped on quotations that many times to get the point across. If he did get dropped or didnt hes still never gonna have any success or an album out in this musical climate. He’s nice but the way the game is now majors aren’t gonna invest in him.

haha, “schadenfreude”, i first acknowledged that this is really a loanword, when i read it at your blog a while back.
is it a very rarely used word, or do the other english-spoken sites i check just need to step their wording (what would be the exact word here?) game up?
there really isn’t a word for schadenfreude in english?? weird, we use it all the time over here. schadenfreude ist die schönste freude!
on another note:
miss, where did the ray-j and whitney post go?? that’s not very professional for a journalist! 😛
you just ruined my comment debut.

FIRST OFF..LMAOOO
SECONDLY.. WHY WOULD YOU ASK TO GET RELEASED FROM A LABEL CAUSE YOUR NOT THIER FIRST PRIORITY??? THATS STUPIDITY…ESPECIALLY IN THIS DAY AND AGE…
WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS???
HOPEFULLY HES LYING CAUSE IF NOT THEN HES AN IDIOT…U HAD FREE DRE BEATS AND COULD HAVE HAD A PUSH FROM EMINEM!!!(FOR FREE)
NOW YOUR BACK ON YOUR BLOCK…TALKING BOUT “THE GOOD OL DAYS”

Although I’m not even that big of a fan, I think Joell is one of the smarter cats out here and I’m glad that he set this straight without dissing anyone. He just told it pretty straight and with a bunch of good points. I actually wouldn’t have had any problem throwing Lamont under the bus. I think Ortiz will get his Joe Buddens (i.e. a kind of prolific career without necessarily dropping an official album) on.
Also…Buddens/Ortiz project hopefully? Two cats who are smart and can rhyme?

nah, joells still doing well and his names still ringing bells with all these videos he’s been making with rik cordero.
meanwhile, bishop lamont is where?…
there is a massive misconception among music fans that signing to a major label is the only way to get things done and that an artist would never want to leave a big label so they could only have been dropped. the industry isn’t that black and white

@tim….
I had to delete that rayj-whitney post because the clip would auto-play and that was f–kin annoying as hell.
As for that word, yeah i keep trying to think of something that means the same in english but I cant. It would just take a long involved description of taking guilty pleasure in someone else’s downward spiral or something.
its almost like the opposite of playerhating….like loserloving?

@missinfo
well, don’t know about any changings in the meaning as a loanword. but in german it just implies the amusement or even pleasure when somebody else gets harmed. it doesn’t imply any positive values like “loserloving” would.
schaden(harm)freude(joy). e.g. goofy is a notorious klutz (?) but you still laugh, if a piano falls on him for the 10th time.
but sure, if sb. you envy in a way gets harmed, the schadenfreude is much greater. 😉

@HAHAHAHAHAHA Why would he sit around when he finds out that he “might” be coming out for years ? Best bet is to say let me out of my deal or put my joint out I recall when Busta had flipmode I was like busta will drop 2-3 more albums before dropping a flipmode album never mind rah digga So she had to move on and look she tried to stick it out .

ive been up on joell for a few years and just now really becoming a fan. he’s been tearing up all these freestyles and songs thats been popping up. i think they got the wrong puerto rican mc rhyming over new premo beats this year.

I didn’t really see any problem with what Bishop said in the interview. It came across respectful and honest. Joell seems to be taking things a little too personally and skewing them to fit his version of events.

first off let me commend you by being your own person and having integrity instead of settling for chucking and jiving for ratings. karma got the best of them (you know what im talking about certain morning show personalities). lol
secondly, Im glad you chose to adress this joel ortiz situation and i read joel blog. This day in age, “dropped” does have a negative condensation attached. And both on joe buddens and joell case i think it was in their best interest to move on and forward. Majors are no longer a strong machine as they were . With all the technology and internet savy if you have a steady fan base, make good music, and are built to promote and distribute yourself nevermind the majors. Props to joel and joe buddens for chosing a different path and not settling for conformity

@BON1BON
WHY WOULD HE BE A PRIORITY ON A MAJORRR LABEL LIKE AFTERMATH>>>THE LABEL WAS THERE BEFORE HIM IT WILL BE THERE AFTER HIM>>>PLENTTTTY OF ARTIST HAVE HAD TO WAIT THERE TURN (AND I MEAN SEVERAL YEARS) TO BLOW AND THEY ARE SUCCESFULL…
LIKE NELLY>>>50 CENT>>>THE GAME>>>EVEN EMINEM WAS SIGNED TO DRE FOR 2 AND HALF YEARS BEFORE HE POPPED>>>
WHO DOES ORTIZ THINK HE IS???
BUT I WISH HIM THE BEST>>>I JUST DOUBT SOMEBODYS GONNA SIGN HIM FOR A MIL OR EVEN HALF THAT…HE MADE A MISTAKE!!!
July 31st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
AND FOR THE RECORD IM NOT “HATING” JUST STATING MY OPINION!!!
(NOWADAYS WHENEVER U DO THAT YOUR A “HATER”)
N I ACTUALLY LIKE HIS MUSIC>> I JUST THINK “DROPPING” YOURSELF FROM AFTERMATH AND GOING BACK TO NOTHING OR “OFFERS” (LOL) IS CAREER SUICIDE…
JUST MY OPINION
P.S. THE TIME THAT HE WOULD HAVE WAITED FOR OTHER AFTERMATH ARTIST THAT HAVE PUT IN MORE WORK AND WAITED LOOOOONGER THAN HIM TO DROP THERE ALBUMS LIKE BUSTA AND EVE IS TIME HE COULD HAVE BEEN USING TO BUILD A NICE LIL WORD THAT 50 LIKES TO USE CALLED “INTEREST”

I think that if he thinks of getting dropped as the recording artist equivalent of getting fired he would be less fascinated. That’s what happened to him. He got the “amicably downsized” or “early retirement” type of fired. The one with the severance package. He’s fortunate. He could’ve gotten the “door knob to ass cheek” fired.
Yeah, Joe Buddens is happy. Sometimes you’re happy to be fired from a shitty job and collecting unemployment insurance.
“Buddens”. lol. I wonder if he spazzes when people add the “s”.

Such a trip to watch this 2 years after the fact. Joell’s situation is so much better… and Bishop Lamont, well… didn’t he get “dropped”? LOL!
Nah, but in all seriousness, it just goes to show you we can’t jump to conclusions when we hear news (even if it’s bad). Some how some way, the determined party will reach their potential.
