Tonite on the show, the big homie, Funk Flex, blasted off the J.Cole song that I’ve been waiting for ever since he performed it during his Hot97 Who’s Next showcase at S.O.B.s a few month ago…straight fire! Love this song. And Flex seemed to love it too…multiple bombs, lol.
UPDATE: Elite tweeted that this isn’t the final version of the song. In which case, I hope J.Cole’s team knew that before they gave it to the biggest hip hop station in the country, to play.
UPDATE 2: Thank you to the homie Wayne Barrow, who, along with Mark Pitts, is now managing J.Cole! That’s a good team for him. Wayne and Mike/Columbia sent over the finalized, dirty CDQ.
Exclusive: J.Cole “Who Dat” (produced by Elite and J.Cole) (clean) (dirty, final version)

I hear the talent but don’t believe he has that it that superstars have. I hope that I’m wrong but the mainstream radio fans will not jump on the banwagon with this track. Cole is nice on the mic with some tracks he has put out but that it factor has been nowhere to be found so far. He will fall under the slept on side of rap if he can’t find the balence with hip hop and pop that his peers around him have found. You know what peers I am speaking of. If he can not or chooses not to go that route then he will be on the long list of rappers blogers say should be respected more than they are. REALRAP.COM just won’t cut it today. You have to mix in the rapping you want to display with a blend of pop to go along with it. Only if he wants to make his being on ROC NATION mean more than just a Jay-Z co sign!!!!!

this song would be cool as a warm up to the real single but not as a 1st official single for the album. i like j tho, im rootin for him

April 27th, 2010 at 2:56 am
ehhhh ….
April 27th, 2010 at 7:18 am
Gotta agree with Mike. Joint is bangin regardless though. Shit could catch on.
April 27th, 2010 at 7:26 am
Mike that’s the realist shit you ever wrote, this goes to any “rapper” that wants to make it….. They have to make HIP-“POP” records!
April 27th, 2010 at 7:46 am
@ Mike
Great points…it does kinda suck that you HAVE to force a pop sound into ya music to be success these days.
It’s sad that a “Get at me Dog”, “Protect ya Neck” or “What you see is what you get” wouldn’t be as successful today as it waas in the previous decade.
I personally prefer Cole’s sound over Drake’s.I mean that is who his competition is no?
April 27th, 2010 at 8:18 am
this dude just doesn’t have “it”
ps. tell that nigga to trim that unibrow lookin like al b sure’s bastard baby
pss. get mike jones for da remix who?
April 27th, 2010 at 8:40 am
I don’t know about turning pop to be successful. Jayz and Rick Ross sold albums last year and I don’t rememeber a “pop” hit. Kanye made a whole album of autotune singing because he wanted to and he was successful. Lil Wayne is obviously “pop” but he didnt put out an album last year (i’m not counting that rock crap). Nikki Minaj just dropped her first single and she’s been hot. What I’m trying to say is the “pop” music is starting to fall on deaf ears and the “real” music is starting to make a comeback. I know you guys don’t like Nikki but its her originality and quirkiness that makes her hiphop. Jay Cole’s lyrics and Drake’s passion are what makes them hot without an album out. When has hiphop allowed rookie guys to tour by themselves without an album? Hiphop is back…….its never going to be successful like it was pre-internet……never…..
April 27th, 2010 at 9:08 am
i don’t know wat y’all are saying about J.cole’s luck of a percived “it” factor, all i’m sure of is that his music is fresh and he can actually rap…. The boy had a successfull college tour so i dout his worried too much about whether Perez Hilton is bumping his beats…..
April 27th, 2010 at 9:29 am
Ehhhh….the song sucks.
April 27th, 2010 at 9:59 am
I have been waiting for this track
April 27th, 2010 at 10:11 am
I gotta feeling someone is going to remix this, kill it, and people are going to forget he even did this song lol
P.S. This is kind of weak for a first single, this does not motivate me to buy his album at all. He better pick up the pace if he wants anyone to buy his shit.
April 27th, 2010 at 10:42 am
THE LYRICS ARE GOOD, THE BEAT GOOD… JUST THE HOOK IT’S JUST NOT ENERGETIC OR CATCHY AT ALL….. IT TAKES AWAY FROM THE SONG….. LYRICALLY MORE SUPERB THAN ANY NEW ARTIST OUT NOW… DUDE JUST NEEDS TO ATTEND “HOOK WRITING UNIVERSITY”.
April 27th, 2010 at 10:48 am
wow, i just gave this track another listen, and i stand corrected, this is hard….”that boy good” (Coming to America)
April 27th, 2010 at 10:49 am
I am rooting for J.Cole, but the commenter “Mike” is on point.
Whether you like him or not, when you hear Drake, you know that you’re hearing a star. Consequently, when you hear J.Cole, you know that you’re hearing a dope rapper, but not necessarily a star. As “Mike” pointed out, the ‘it’ factor is noticeably absent.
These days, only stars sell records. Dope rappers merely garner comment and respect on message boards and blogs.
April 27th, 2010 at 11:01 am
Nigga’s nasty. This shit is urb son
April 27th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Listening to people talk about rapping is like listening to people talk about politics. Is everything this extreme? Every track that comes out nowadays is either “garbage” or “straight fire”. I live in NC and have followed the early stages of Cole’s career, and anyone with half a brain can see that the kid is talented. This particular track may not be your thing, but garbage? Spare us the ignorant hate. Another point is being a star and being successful are not one and the same. And I completely disagree about J not having that “it” factor. The Warm Up mixtape provided plenty of “it”. Whatever the fuck “it” is…
April 27th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
J Cole is mediocrity in a rap game where absolute wackness sells.
Cole isn’t terrible, but there’s nothing about him that makes me go “I gotta listen to this dude!”
Is it his voice? Naw, nothing unique there.
Is it his content? Nope, hasn’t said anything that really caught my ear. Dude raps like someone with nothing to say, but can spit a decent “i’m hot like summer” type line.
Is it his flow? Naw. Nothing unique there.
Cole is competent, but I never (and will never) like an emcee simply because he or she is competent. You have to be ill, point blank. or you’re not worth listening to.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
J COLE IS BETTER THAN DRAKE.
MORE PASSIONATE THAN DRAKE.
AND JUST WAYYY BETTER THAN COMMERCIAL DRAKE REALLY.
I FEEL WHAT YOU ARE SAYING @MIKE BUT…
IF HE WENT DOWN THAT POP ROUTE THEN HE WOULDN’T BE AUTHENTIC AND THERE REALLY WOULDN’T BE ANYTHING SPECIAL ABOUT HIM.
HOPEFULLY PEOPLE WILL RECOGNISE GOOD MUSIC.
IT WORKED FOR KANYE.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Are u serious? lol at Nicky minage being original, lol at Jay not having a pop hit in bp3, lol at Kanyes autotuned album being real hiphop. You clearly dont hav a clue. nuff said.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
in a world where gucci fucking mane is popular ANYTHING is possible.. dont give me no bullshit about some “it” factor FOH…
and also aint no more rap fans, everybody’s a fucking A&R now. how the hell you know who’s gonna blow up or not…
just shut the fuck up and listen to the record. if you like it buy it and if you dont, dont buy it…
shits disgusting…
April 27th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
Before the MTV Taylor Swift thing with Kanye he was the biggest POP STAR in the music biz. Forget what type of music it was. Kanye was hands down that guy. J Cole has the talent to get there but the direction he is on now will not put him in the same light as Yeezy. To sit and say a pop artist doesn’t make real music would be a closed minded statement. All Pop music is, is a song more people jump toward… KEEPITREAL.COM IS COOL BUT THOSE RAPS WILL ONLY GET PLAYED BUT SO MUCH. Not to be harsh with dude because I like him for the most part. To compare him to Kanye before an album is a bit much. Before that we first have to line him up with his peers. And When Your Boss says Another Rapper is up Next. On a Track you are On LOL I’m just saying!!!!
April 27th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
he needs to chill
recording some songs
then for september the final first album !
j.cole is fuckin’ nice on the mic
lyrical dude, good flow… weak voice
but he can manage it as well wit jay & no id as mentor
the rest will be history if he has crazy beats on his bag for this album
peace
April 27th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
I like the originality of Nikki’s, delivery, pitch changes and afflection. Everything else is Lil Kim. I guess Death of the Autotune, the most ironic successful song of 2009 was a pop hit? What the hell is Waka Flaka putting out if DOA is pop? I don’t care how many successful songs Jay has I would never say he made a “pop” hit. So let me fix my prior statement Jay Cole cannot be suceessful as a rapper if he doesn’t have “commercial” success, but he can be successful if he doesn’t put out a “pop” song. There is a BIG difference……….
These are some of my “pop” rappers: waka flaka, gucci man, busta, method man, redman, fat joe, puffy (if he counts), soldier boy, nelly, snoop, ja rule, 50 cent, ll cool j, Em????(he confuses me),…..and now sadly Drake…..
April 27th, 2010 at 3:42 pm
Man I’ve been thinking the same thing. I don’t know if it’s the blogs (with the comments) or American Idol or what, but everybody IS a fucking A&R. No fans. You see somebody release a song and they’re like “yea it’s a hot song I like it, but it doesn’t sound like a single” or some shit like that. Seriously?
As you said this shit IS disgusting
April 27th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
HONESTLY YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A POP SOUND TO MAKE IT
LOOK AT 50 CENT BEFORE IN THE CLUB DROPPED WANKSTA WAS A STRAIGHT STREET RECORD AND IT STILL BLEW UP IT’S THIS SIMPLE THE ARTIST JUST HAVE TO BE THEM SELVES
April 27th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
YOU HIT IT ON POINT….
EXCEPT FOR THE NIKKI MINAJ STATEMENT BELIVE IT OR NOT THAT FIRST SINGLE DID NOT POP OFF AND DRAKES FIRST SINGLE DID NOT POP OFF
April 27th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
That was nearly a decade ago.I was still in college when 50 dropped.50 cent on the tail end of Eminems success was the last to sell CRAZY numbers as he did.
How much straight street music has sold 5,6,7,8 million copies?
Since 50, no one has been able to repeat that success of a pure street following to mega stardom. With the exception maybe being a few Trap artist like T.I or Jeezy.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
i can really see this guy getting big. i like!
@killabreeze follow me Miss Info!
April 27th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
watever sun, evrybody knws dat Nicky garbage is as fake as they come, DOA was jays only street singles, all d other singles had alot of pop and r n b features thus watering dem dowm, u r not oblivious of dat, are u ? J cole can be successful without being all commercial lik drake.
April 27th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Both The Come Up, and The Warm Up had better tracks then this. He tryna’ go too hard hip-hop wise, but mainstream don’t like that. Mainstream want up beat, pop, rap. Sorry, rap ain’t Hip-Hop, I had to distinguish them from each other when suckas like Wayne, and other hmhmmsouthernhehmmm, rappers makin’ it big off of garbage. Hip-hop only live in the East!
April 27th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
I was speaking to an old blues legend recently and he said something that gave me goose bumps. Years from now Asians and Whites will have to show everyone what the blues music is.
I’ll put every single Talid, Mos Def, Dead Prez album above a soldier boy anyday.
April 27th, 2010 at 5:20 pm
COSIGN!!! The record is cool and he definitely can rap, but it doesnt speak to me. I’m stil lookin for dude to come with more material though
April 27th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
I don’t think anyone is calling the track garbage nor are they callin J Cole garbage. Its a dope track especially if you’re a hiphop head. What people are saying is if he wants cross over success, this is not it, but If he doesn’t care about cross over success, thats fine too
April 27th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
I don’t agree about Nikki. She’s not my cup of tea but she does have some originality and is definately hiphop. DOA and NY was his hits of the album. So NY is “pop” because it was commercially successful but DOA was “street” even though it was commercially successful too? I’m oblivious to why RNB waters down a song? Is this a blanket statement? I thought the ability to have RNB in a song was a plus in hiphop? So singing isn’t hiphop? Have you heard of the Love Below album? The other dude in this post was right everybody has become an A&R. Who the hell cares if a great song is successful, it SHOULD BE! My problem is with the bad songs that are successful. THOSE are the “pop” songs YOU are talking about. Once again, unless Jay is dropping a part 2 to “H to the Izzo” he can NEVER be “pop”. Commercially successful…..but not “pop”
April 27th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
Me personally, I can really care less about his status in the mainstream or his “it” factor. As long as he puts out good music, why should we care about his status? Shouldnt we only just care about the bars and beats? When did someones status in the game become a key issue to fans? Maybe I shouldnt say when, but why?
April 27th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Agreed. When did fans start caring about “it” factors like we A&R’s or some shit. We should only care about good music cause thats all we can get out of it!
April 27th, 2010 at 6:53 pm
Yeah this is the weakest song I heard from him but he by far has the it factor if you listen to his mixtapes you hear it multiple times over
my personal favorite is lil ghetto nigga. I wonder if this is really his first single or not.
Honestly i dont believe nothin anybody say when Lady gaga has 150 million views on Youtube and Michael Jackson got 50 million (and thats his highest one) music has gone straight to the trash nigga
April 27th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
J Cole is nice, but no need to for Flex to drop multiple “bombs” for this.
April 27th, 2010 at 10:55 pm
J.Cole is the truth… I heard this song live at SOBS “who’s next” show and I have to say I’m a big J.Cole fan, he had SOBS packed truth be told I didn’t even know that so many people knew about him. He had the place goin crazy amazing preformer. I also saw him do his college tout thing at Adelphi, have too say not too many people knew about him there but by the end of his performances everyone was feeling him. Listen to “the come up” and “the warm up” two amazing mixtapes, any doubters will see what the hype is about.
April 30th, 2010 at 1:07 am
this shit is trash , 20,000 leagues under what j cole is capable of , they need to turf this track a.s.a.p , a dolla and a dream to some dumb young jeezy knock off track , loved the warm up but after that everything should be hot , this shit isn’t even lukewarm its cold , its wack its not j cole. People wanna act like stans and not say shit negative because they have so much respect for him , which i do as well but everyone who likes j cole for his for the lack of a better term “genuineness” (yeah i know its not a real word) this shit isn’t j cole its j cole playing a role he isnt exactly comfortable in , back to the drawing board bro.
