Diggy Simmons Isn’t Too Happy: Fires at J. Cole on “What You Say To Me”
Posted by Mr.North under Beef , Hmmm? , New Music[73] Comments
It’s officially April Fools Day, but don’t tell that to Diggy Simmons. Looks like the young MC had something to get off his chest in the song, “What You Say To Me.” The origin of the song is unknown, but when listening to the second verse it seems as though Diggy didn’t take a certain line on J. Cole’s “Grew Up Fast” too lightly. On that song, J. Cole lightly tapped Russell’s nephew during the first verse rapping:
“Move along cock-sucker, ain’t got nothing to see,
‘less you talking blockbuster, you niggas is not Russell
You more Diggy, Me, I’m more Biggie
No diss to the young boy, I’m just rapping, get bored quickly”
UPDATE: The Reverend has spoken. Still interesting that this was in the stash (the second verse), and if we’ll hear a comeback.
Listen and catch the lyrics to Diggy’s “What You Say To Me” after the jump…..
New Music: Diggy Simmons – “What You Say To Me” (Props to DDotOmen)
“The other day I was listening to Purple Rain, couldn’t believe all of the things that I heard em say
Who dat, who dat, you know who it is, heard you lying on my sis, tellin people that you hit
when your album drops I’ma hit you with your bricks, so I’ma bomb first on you since you wanna riff
who you gonna call, you ain’t got no friends, this fight is fixed, you ain’t got no wins,
little nigga named Cole think he live like me, jet setter trend setter, yeah you not like me
can’t find a girl that you know that do not like me, can’t find a girl I know, who know you, you dumb fool
wasn’t even poppin’ in the school you used to go to.”“Gotta “aight” lyrics but can’t deliver your vocals
I’ma about to read you your rights, Miranda
only thing you hittin “In The Morning” is your Hand
stand up, matter fact sit down
don’t try to call Hovi Hov for a sit down
College boy, acting like a criminal
knowing you a broke back Jake Gyllenhaal
You imaginary player, even TMZ didn’t notice you was there
Geesh, you are such a dweeb
and your shirts don’t fit, long arms, short sleeves.”
Diggy also references J. Cole’s “Purple Rain” off his Friday Night Lights mixtape, touching on the subject of his sister Vanessa Simmons where Cole World rapped:
“Good girl huh, father was a preacher
sent her off to college thought I got her on a leash though
from the outside though, them girls be the squeakiest
you get ‘em inside them girls be the freakiest
mischievous, downright devious
say she want cake I got all the right ingredients
running round fronting like a pure white virgin
gave a n-gga dome while her father gave a Sermon
Amen, let the choir sing
she be walking round campus like the quiet thing
so n-ggas scared to approach when they admiring
man if they know like I know she got that fire thing
pour a little OJ with some P-trone
I’m feeling ok, but homie she’s gone
when remmy Rev called she just ignore him
I had her calling on God till the weed
and than I hit the door n-gga.”
This comes a week after Diggy’s debut album, Unexpected Arrival released to low first-week numbers moving 21,000 copies. First Canibus, then Charles Hamilton, now this. Looks like J. Cole is the current target in rap right now.
UPDATE #2: Vanessa hit Twitter a few hours after the song hit online to respond.

DICKY needs to calm the fu** down!!! STay in a childs place like my family would have told me.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:00 am
JCOLE is not about to step in a boxing match with a teenager lol
April 1st, 2012 at 2:00 am
This would have been an even funnier April Fools joke if he let his brothers JoJo & Russy get a verse in as well on Cole LMAO
April 1st, 2012 at 2:24 am
Guess that’s what happens when your album flops harder than Shawn Bradley. Hope this is a joke.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:25 am
The first five or so lines are targeted at bow wow. I believe diggy took it a little to serious.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:57 am
This kid can’t be serious. First how can you talk about other peoples albums bricking after you just caught an L yourself. Second no one can ever take him seriously after Runs House. Lastlyand most importantly Cole would eat him alive
April 1st, 2012 at 4:02 am
Big Diggy Fan
April 1st, 2012 at 4:18 am
i respect Diggy for speaking up, if he respects his self as a rapper he has a responsibility to say something. J. Cole was lightweight for taking shots a rapper that he thought wouldn’t speak up towards him.
April 1st, 2012 at 4:29 am
Hey, its noble.. at least the little homie defending his sisters honor even if she is a skeet skeet.. This is what hes suppose to do.. ONLY PROBLEM is hahah HE MIGHT HAVE SAID ENOUGH TO MAKE J.COLE WANT TO ACTUALLY RESPOND HAHAH
April 1st, 2012 at 4:57 am
jcole continues on to say something about making up for that line by taking him on tour with him and showing him how it goes giving him girls and shit, dunno why he would go this hard, instead take him up on his offer and open for him, would be a good look.
April 1st, 2012 at 6:25 am

April 1st, 2012 at 7:55 am

diggy can not really be try to start beef
for a cole that said sorry for in the same song lol
i guess when album sale are low you have to get some kinda buzz going
would be better if want after bow
April 1st, 2012 at 7:56 am
This is hip hop. So it is What it is. He his took it to serious. I think he wants.the world to know hes not a lil boy anymore! Kind of hard after being on a family show on MTV. HE REALLY HAS TO PROVE HIMSELF! THIS IS HOP HOP NOT R&B. AS FOR COLE HE WENT IN ON HIM BUT I THINK HE WAS JUST FLOWING. HE DIDNT MEAN WHAT HE SAID, IF YOU REALLY LISTEN. BUT DIGGY HAS TO STAND UP IN ORDER FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE HIM SERIOUS. I LIKE THE TRACK GOOD JOB LIL HOMIE
April 1st, 2012 at 8:21 am

April 1st, 2012 at 9:19 am

April 1st, 2012 at 10:18 am
this odd spot for cole if goes on the young boy he seems like a bully
but if let it slide he may seem soft
April 1st, 2012 at 10:49 am
no matter how much i hate(or jealousy) this kid…you gotto respect his ambition and lyrical prowess.
and with that said i have a new found respect for digga!!!
who else got the balls to go at jay-z’s artist…other then jayzs past haters/artist lol
April 1st, 2012 at 10:54 am
j cole willl murder this child. cole referenced him in a metaphor then he actually said he would take em on tour wit em and put 2 girls on em that would change his whole life. Cole should make an example of him since everyone seams to be tryna come at cole in some way
April 1st, 2012 at 11:21 am
lol diggy let a couple shots off.the kid got sum heart.he ok in my book
April 1st, 2012 at 11:45 am
Regardless of skill level if a man speaks ill of ya family you have every right if not a duty to respond. I’m perfectly fine w/ this. Diggy already showing more heart and speaking more directly then a lot of this 1/2 ass scared to say anything ass rappers.
April 1st, 2012 at 12:14 pm
Yo he spit the truth though “who dat who dat” is from purple rain lol I like diggy in this zone.
Diggy should have did this before his album would have sold more than 20 k lol
April 1st, 2012 at 1:04 pm
@Nightfall, I totally agree !! lil homie is stepping up not taking shit from anyone. Thats what Hip Hop was suppose to be about !!
April 1st, 2012 at 1:41 pm
diggy just got people talk about sister know
no one was think about that song from 2010 think it was one sister
but know he has people wondering
April 1st, 2012 at 1:52 pm
The timing of the record seems suspicious…
Something like this seems like it should have been released closer to when Purple Rain dropped.
Seems pretty bad to release it after Diggy releases his own album to little fanfare. Especially since the opening lines were talking about J.Cole album bricking.
That being said, Diggy deserves props for defending his sister.
The downside is that I bet not a lot of people were really thinking that J.Cole was talking about Vanessa. But by Diggy bringing light to it, it’s an implicit acknowledgement. Now everybody’s (re)checking that J.Cole track in light of the revelation.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:12 pm
Of all Run’s sons this one has the most ‘Run’ in him.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:17 pm
I think Diggy is overeating. So, a girl acts like a ho and shes a preacher’s daughter… thats automatically, your sister, bro? Or did I miss something? The preacher’s freak daughter is something that happens more than you think. Believe me.
April 1st, 2012 at 2:26 pm
Couldn’t Cole’s verse been about any PK? That’s the stereotype PKs tend to have, no? Unless I’m oblivous to some Vanessa/Cole rumor, the Simmons fam might’ve taken the bait on that one…
April 1st, 2012 at 2:49 pm
hmm did you just quote drake someone who is afraid to beef
April 1st, 2012 at 3:22 pm
Both Rev Run and Vanessa replied and said the track is an OLD SONG that someone leaked.
Either way props to Diggy.
April 1st, 2012 at 3:54 pm
Did Diggy just dry snitch on Vanessa? I mean I listened to that song dozens of times and never thought it was about her. Well you know what they say about guilty conscience….
April 1st, 2012 at 4:23 pm
J.cole/hov vs diggy/jojo let’s go. Can’t be mad at the kid for feeling slighted by what cole said. Cole better not answer he’s too old for that with this kid.
April 1st, 2012 at 4:28 pm
You know what… 10 years ago I would have said this is a legit response and blah blah blah. But Hip Hop in this day and Age…. with all these clowns, Actors and such I wouldn’t be surprised if these 2 didn’t come up with this fake bullshit together. Especially with both having poor record sales. Cause I mean “really” who else can they beef with to cause a little attention without having physical harm dealt to them or being lyrically destroyed before there careers even peek.
Not for nothing I like lil Diggy but history shows Being on a reality show doesn’t help your career it just brings more of a microscope on your life. And I’m not saying he’s not talented (much more talented then Joe Joe) But the machine behind him and the formula is off (Batteries not included). Not to mention his pops was part of one of the biggest hip hop groups ever. Should have went a different route….lol…
April 1st, 2012 at 4:29 pm
Yo, I just can’t smh. Can we all hop off of our hip hop elite podium for a second and just forget about the fact that this is j.cole. this could be the president of united states of america. If you come at a dudes family they have and obligation to respond it is that simple especially two hip hop artists. And can we also say this dude has more balls than dudes who are in their 20’s. Look I’m not a fan of diggy, but I just think that when you disrespect another mans family( in his case vanessa) twice, you have to expect a response especially when they have family in hip hop. I think j.cole could lyrically murder diggy, but so what! Who cares! Diggy was sticking up for his fam, and you can’t hate on that period. I’m not choosing sides here I just think people see j.cole and they start picking on this kid for standing up, and defending his sister. Forget about who is better! Right now I have a ton of respect for diggy.
April 1st, 2012 at 5:08 pm
@DIGGY SIMMONS- GET THE F##K OUT OF HERE, GET THE F##K,OUT HERE, GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE ,WITH YOUT BIG BIRD NOSE.
April 1st, 2012 at 5:37 pm
That J. Cole line could have been about any chick or just a general ref. why they take that shit so hard? Must be some truth to it..
April 1st, 2012 at 5:50 pm
Son! Where’d you go to school? LMFAO
April 1st, 2012 at 5:56 pm
first of all his name is DIGGY second of all he was defending his family j cole had no right to say that AT ALL third of all hes basically an ADULT hes 17 soo in that case you mind yo business and take care of yo family like he did his !!!!! STAY IN YO PLACE @wohoo
April 1st, 2012 at 6:30 pm
First of all, Diggy is super talented and his album is tight. I like
him as an artist and J Cole also. Not really feeling the diss record. I feel that is beneath him. J Cole shouldn’t be disrespecting the sistah either. Who gains anything by this?
April 1st, 2012 at 6:58 pm
That’s the truth, I’m an avid J. Cole fan and never thought there was anything more to that verse other then cole just telling another insightful store of good girl gone wrong. Hell in that case DIGGY should dis all rappers who has ever came with that form of a story!
April 1st, 2012 at 7:04 pm
Honestly if DIGGY was any other rapper it would be a nice shot at COLE in the respect that he at least thought he could battle him but none of us in the hip hop community never even knew they COLE & Vanessa even knew each other. COLE should just leave three women in his room now since DIGGY is just having a temper issue today! Btw DIGGY has a pretty nice album too, it was worth the ten dollars so I wouldn’t feel bad at the 20K, hell that’s 20k more then I and a lot of rappers have ever sold!
April 1st, 2012 at 7:04 pm
How is Diggy defending his sister’s honor if we are not even sure if Cole was referencing her in the first place. Either something really happened between the two or (more than likely) Diggy found an opportunity to turn nothing into something and get some press. Even the first line is pretty lightweight and doesn’t sound like much of a diss. Reminds me of when Saigon was upset about a line Joe Budden used trying to say he was dissing him.
April 1st, 2012 at 7:05 pm
If I put out a rap that says…” I’m hot like Jay-Z and you so J-Cole, No diss to that man” Could J-Cole take that as a diss???? I’m just saying….lol Rev. Run is the father of hip hop. You don’t think he knows a diss when he hears one???
April 1st, 2012 at 7:49 pm
what?
April 1st, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Agreed, J.Cole, Big Sean, drake= scared to have lyrical battles
April 1st, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Uhhh why just happened……did I like just miss sum thing……….when did this happen
April 1st, 2012 at 10:16 pm
Uhhh wht just happened……did I like just miss sum thing……….when did this happen
April 1st, 2012 at 10:47 pm
also Diggy killed that beat.
April 1st, 2012 at 10:49 pm
Damn, am i the only one that listened to Diggy on that track? He went in and straight kilt that thang. All this beef stuff is whack though. Errbody need to move on
April 1st, 2012 at 11:40 pm
beat was bangin…anyone got the instrumental?
April 1st, 2012 at 11:51 pm
lololol
April 2nd, 2012 at 1:19 am
I mean clearly this is what’s going on here… Don’t u see???
April 2nd, 2012 at 1:37 am
its a diss but not as bad as you think, unless j.cole thinks he is on jay-z’s level or close to it, which he isnt so he shouldnt be offended
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:08 am
I respect diggy for sticking up for his sister but besides that, I think his flow is weak delivery is suspect and what makes it worse everything doggy say about Cole in his song is true about himself.
April 2nd, 2012 at 8:01 am
Jcole up out diss records on Diggy’s? Really? Must of missed them! Niga do anything for attention every rapper mentions every other rapper at some point just because someone says you name it doesn’t automatically fall into the diss category rap niga is sensitive this is what happens when rich kids rap BS ass fake beefs Rev Run is A fucking clown fuck all tha legendary shit lame niga hustling his kids and god
April 2nd, 2012 at 8:04 am
These nigas are so conceited that if A niga says he’s fucking with a girl whos father is a preacher it has to be the Simmons family smh sad….
April 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 am
Now you got attention. To bad it’s about a track that was made a whiles back “according to camp RUN”. But truthfully Rev Run. Should not even be tweeting. If anything he should of said this is stupid and I’ll have talk with both kids. Instead he is defending his sons actions as if “its ok to beef”. Cole would be wrong to answer to a minor. Diggy needs to focus on his craft you took an L you learn and come back harder. Going at someone who is lyrically better than you is career suicide.
But what hapens if Cole feels like a spanking is needed? And Diggy can’t hold His own. Is jo-jo gonna get in? or REV RUV?
If your sisters wanna date who ever they want it’s ok. No harm in that. Cause its there life. But RAP/HIP HOP BEING so harsh they become part of the game, and become targets to gossip etc.
April 2nd, 2012 at 9:11 am
Simmons family too sensitive j.cole didn’t even mention vanessa name. So how is that a shot at her so she speaks for every girl who has a reverend for a father.
April 2nd, 2012 at 10:33 am
kats hate on diggy cuz they see him only as runs son and russells neph but dude got lyrics and reguardles or not the song was pretty good and he kinda got on em in a few lines … j cole prob wont respond hell jus brush him off cuz hes a teen but if diggy comes again with another track and its good cole is gonna respond jus off pride but knowing whats is up it will get squash behind the scenes in a matter of weeks …. secondly too his album didnt do so well so maybe somebody in his camp leak it to get a lil buzz for diggy … and its weird that this drops on april fools dayu?? see the connection ?? everything is a marketing tool … its the way the game works now … but diggy got bars though …
April 2nd, 2012 at 11:35 am
I agree, Diggy went hard on this one, but his timing was bad. That J Cole record came out a few weeks ago..
If Diggy would of came out with this a day or two after J Cole dropped “Grew up fast” then we’d be talking about serious lyrical damage to J Cole. But with Diggy coming out with his retaliation now, it makes it seem as if he thought too long and hard about making the perfect comeback diss record; possibly to help boost his image and low album sales.
April 2nd, 2012 at 11:57 am
Assuming this is tru and not a n aprils fools day prank,i’m left wondering why it’s happening at all? Diggy is defending his sister from a verse from 2010 about a preacher’s daughter whos eCole rhymes was a lady in the streets and a freak in the sheets. Never does Cole mention of the SImmons girls by name or reference. And i would give mor credence to Diggy defending his sister’s honor if he thought any of it was tru & he released the song when it was recorded. Rather, he releases it after dropping a brink first week out and goes after a guy who has not shown an inclination to get involved in bogus rap beefs.
April 2nd, 2012 at 1:06 pm
j. cole says something along the lines of “vanessa, i thought we were in love that one semester” on “grew up fast”, it’s right after the lines about taking diggy on tour, etc. by dropping her name and diggy within a few bars of each other, connecting the dots isn’t hard. cole violated, keep that between you and her, homie…
April 2nd, 2012 at 1:52 pm
yea maybe. its a good diss song tho.wonder if cole will come back at him.
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:13 pm
3 things need to be talked about here:
#1… Jay Cole is NOT THAT NICE of an emcee. He’s cool & all &special BY TODAY’S STANDARDS but he ain’t legendary or anything like that. All I keep reading is how nice he is. Transport him back to the 90’s & his ass gets ate up by 90% of the emcees out there- PERIOD!
#2… WTF was Diggy supposed to do? Let that ish slide? C’mon man this is HIP HOP! I don’t care if he could win a rhyme battle or not. J Cole talked some trash & Diggy went at him. Kudos to the kid for trying! Cole ain’t untouchable or bulletproof by any means.
#3… That beat is INSANE! Now THAT is the type of beat you go in on when you are making a diss record! I could see Jay or Nas in their prime just roasting fools over that ish! Whoever produced that joint did not get paid his just monies cuz’ that’s worth more than a throwaway record!
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:20 pm
You would be spot on IF J Cole had shitty album sales to complain about… Cole’s album is one of few albums that went Gold last year, far from a brick. Infact he sold ten times more than Diggy did in his debut week.
Fact is Diggy reached real far to go ahead and dis Cole.. Diggy is begging for some more attention from the Hip Hop community.
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:31 pm
This dissing J. Cole shit is wack right now. J. Cole gave Diggy a light jab and then bigged him up… So he mentions something about a preacher’s daughter and all of a sudden he is dissing Diggy’s sister Vanessa? Sounds like a reach to me…
Then your album flops and this song is mysteriously leaked….. And of course ppl are talking now. Diggy aint defending his sister’s honor, he is trying to show he is (almost) a man by dissing an MC that’s better than he is.
I don’t think Cole will give him a whole song but maybe 8 to 16 bars just to remind Diggy he isn’t on his level.
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:36 pm
rich black people arguing. no one should care. j. cole is an average mc. diggy was born into privilege. they should spend less time rapping and more time figuring out how to hoard their money, and evade paying taxes like mitt romney. knowing vanessa she probably did let that average bum hit. lol. good one, cole.
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:44 pm
this song was pretty funny. i won’t lie. diggy is a better m.c. than cole. and he’s right, cole can’t deliver his lines. lol. a lot of m.c.’s forget that delivery is almost more important than wordplay. look at dmx. look at snoop. jay-z isn’t even that good at delivery. he got better after he got with the philly crew. everybody can’t be nas or scarface or big or pac.
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:27 pm
when is diggy’s voice going to change? Did somebody already ask that?
April 2nd, 2012 at 6:25 pm
Ive never even heard the song
April 2nd, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Amen I Respect it to nobody could talk about my sister and get away with it
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:37 am
I would have all the heart in the world if my dad was Run and I was an industry baby In this daqy and age you can always show proof of a text twitter email picture voicemail … So if Cole needed to put her on blast he could “leak” aka (my phone was stolen) that information It just seems people like cole was being a words smith noting personal
