Last night, BET premiered a new documentary called My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women & Hip Hop, the feature goes in-depth about the history of the Female MC and talks about the void that’s currently present in rap music. The documentary features Eve, MC Lyte, Jean Grae, Eve, Yo Yo, Salt ‘N Pepa, Missy Elliott, Trina, Roxane Shante, Rah Digga, Lady Of Rage and more.

I like how they blamed the lack or female presence in today’s hip hop on everything else (like maintenance)…..but they failed to mention that they’ve all been suck!

Great Piece!! Trina got too much credit kim got too little credit!!
The business is bad for everyone these days unless another big act breaks you you chances are slim..

That’s funny there’s some male emcee’s that have made sucky songs (some a whole darn album) but they still get a second chance, as well as the green light to continue to punish my ears.
Good documentary, love what MC Lyte said about the power and influence a male emcee lyrics has on the genre as a whole.

I enjoyed it!
The Lauryn Hill part made me sad, as well as the Lady of Rage part. She really did get a raw deal with the destruction of Death Row.
I love Eve and I really like the way they broke down Nicki Manag and the blue print of being under this Dominant male artist and like voltron taking the essence of Eve, Kim, and Missy in order to build this uber sexual EmCee lls

Great documentary!
nobody talked about Remy Ma? or even Bahamadia?
anyway, the problem with female emcees is the same problem with hip hop in general: Hip hop’s wack, not about reality anymore, and simply isn’t interested in ‘the truth’.

Nobody mentioned “Dynasty?”
That new track she has with Premo is one of the nicest tracks I’ve heard in a minute:

and I agree with the doc: Lyte has one of the best, instantly recognizable voices in rap.

nice
Rah Digga should ride downtown Newark find a chick and be like say this, guys do it all the time, Remy should of got some love, besides a few pictures, she could of been interviewed or something, and where was Charlie B, but they are so right about the co-sign, it is crazy, but it is what it is

i actually wrote a piece about Nicki and the female MC, I don’t think this program fleshed her out as much as it could have
http://theinterludes.com/2010/07/07/where-my-girls-at/
also, no Monie Love???
August 31st, 2010 at 5:01 pm
that was pretty dope

In the grand scheme of things I think they did Nicki justice because it was a piece on female emcee not a marketing platform for one artist although I do agree with the Monie love part cause that was my boo back in the day lls

I know right smh
(craving for more)

I read on Nahright on one of the post the reason we dont need women in hip hop is because if the extra effeminate dudes rapping replacing them lls
I mean its funny but (sigh) wow makes you think
August 31st, 2010 at 5:27 pm
nah i wouldnt want it to be a “marketing platform”, i just mean its strange that a program that was all about women in hip-hop would sort of downplay the biggest female MC we’ve seen in years.. there weren’t really any substantial comments about her, and i would have loved to see Missy/Eve’s opinion on her, or maybe even a Nicki interview
August 31st, 2010 at 6:03 pm
wow….. uh…. *ouch*
You just said it all, she kinda lacks substance my dude, so its hard to get something from nothing. Lets not mistake biggest female artist, to only female artist with a substantial marketing dollar pushing her. and I’ve seen her interviews I think it would have hurt the cause. The goal is to open the doors back up not set and entire women’s movement back another 20 years. Asking other female rappers opinions of her also only hurts the cause. I think she got about as much as you can give in that piece in order to keep it solid. You know without skewing the message. The message is What happen to the female voice in hip hop? Where did it go, and how can we bring it back? If you allow it to flourish it can be profitable.
Naw I cant be with you on that I know your a Nicki fan but trust me that would not have been a good look. smh

This is really cool, ladies. It’s as informative as it is thought-provoking. Good for Hip Hop, indeed! Thank you.
August 31st, 2010 at 11:26 pm
I know this isn’t directly related to female hip hop, but tell me this isn’t one of the best HIP HOP tracks you’ve heard in years. And it just came out:

When hip hop gets better, then we’ll see more female emcees. That’s my opinion. The game is wack on several levels, and people aren’t trying to hear realness. YET.

Bahamadia is definitely the #1 female emcee for me, definitely one of the top emcees of all time.

This was cool in all but, how can they leave out Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the this discussion. She is lyrically up there with Tupac. She may not have had a chance to release her solo work, but honestly her verse on Waterfall’s demolishes the majority of female and male mc’s

It would have been interesting to add M.I.A. to this mix.
