Miss Info Exclusive: Kanye’s “Stronger” screening
Posted by Miss Info under Uncategorized[62] Comments
Just got back from a nice, small screening party for Kanye’s new “Stronger” video…again, kudos to ‘Ye for knowing how to throw a get-together that is actually appropriate for the occasion. Its a video screening, not a gala, so it was at the small Tribeca Screening Room. But it was for a video that obviously Kanye cares about, and took him a lot of time and sweat investment, so he brought A-Trak to DJ before and after. He had some food trays laid out, and even free drinks (“But not no champagne…that y’all have to pay for” -Kanye). And along with celebrity friends like Swizz Beats and Consequence, Kanye also had media people (self, Shaheem and Rahman from MTV News, Datwon from King Magazine, etc), his business ppls– like LA Reid and Babyface (?!), and also…folks who actually worked on the actual video at the post-production studio. Nice. Only right.
Now before Kanye aired the video and afterward, he talked about the long ordeal that it took to make it, as well as some other really interesting comments about the song itself, the very unapologetic attitude he shows in the rhymes on the song, his hindsight on some of the shortcomings of his other videos, and what happened when he started reading “the hip hop blogs” hahaha…..All in all, having known Kanye years ago when he wasnt yet a huge star…then seeing him over time as he was a huge star…and then now….it felt like he was more comfortable and happy. And more comfortable being happy, lol. Like the confidence without the chip on his shoulder. And it was great to hear his smart humor come through.
I’ll try to remember exactly what he said, my dumb ass didnt have a recorder with me. (and sorry to Kanye if he happens to read this, I am paraphrasing his comments from memory….. because he’s a massive super-stickler about quotes….overly so, IMHO) And whenever the video leaks I’ll post it here but for now, I have a couple pics, and some notes that I took on my way home : ) sorry its not exactly perfect prose. I’m anxious to play Wii (the best thing ever invented! lol)
ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE VIDEO:
-video took 9 days to shoot, directed by Hype Williams, partially styled by June Ambrose. Shots done in the Shibuya section of Tokyo (I am so in love with Japan. I go there like once a month now, and I’m doing alot of business out there too”)…but then it took 3 months to finish in post production….Hype tried to quit 3 times but Kanye convinced him to say on (I think he was joking about the quitting)
-because of the limited budget, they just shot in friends stores…for example, they used the hallway of the BBC store, stairs of the Bape store, got a real motorcycle gang,
-Cassie gueststars in the video as….well, just a model. She flew out with just 3 days notice. (see the second photo above)
-One of the things that prompted ‘Ye to go back and redo parts of the video, was when he showed Atrak footage, and he said that Kanye’s afghan scarf outfit looked stupid. Only problem: that was the outfit in Kanye’s main performance shots, so he had to go back and try to rework things.
-The second verse wasnt even written when Kanye started shooting the video, so he likened this video to a song: “this is the first time I got to make a video the same way I would compose a song…Going back and reworking things, and changing parts all the way up until the end….”
ABOUT THE ALBUM AND “STRONGER”:
-Kanye says the album and the song represented a change, I think in his attitude….he said he had to crawl out of from all the “wack juice” that he was covered in over the last year. Which was very interesting to hear him say….I wonder what wackjuice he was talking about.
-he said that songs like Diamonds, etc were good but that people maybe liked them without really fully relating to them…
Then he was talking to John Brion (the musical director for Kanye’s last album, who added much of the orchestral elements, and who produced Fiona Apple, etc) who is obviously someone that kanye sees as a musical mentor…
“After I played John some stuff, he said, I dont want you to spit raps…well he didnt say that, he said I dont want you to say verses to buy you goodwill….” and that led to Kanye just stripping away some of the intention and just say what he really wanted to say….(then Kanye performed the first verse of Stronger….)
n- n- now th- that don’t kill me
can only make me stronger…
bow in the presence of greatness
cause right now thou has forsaken us
you should be honored by my lateness
that i would even show up to this fake sh*t
so go ahead go nuts go ape sh*t
-Kanye also related that another incident that led to his new attitude. He said there were some mistakes that he recognizes that he made. Like when MTV flew him out to Denmark, where he says he was freezing to death, for the MTV Europe awards. He said It was wrong for me to run up there and wild out, but when they first told me, hey you’re nominated for THREE awards….I thought, wait a minute, so that means that there are two other awards that I can win besides Video of the Year….THIS is gonna be some bullshit….” (LOL) And thats when they gave him the best hip hop video award. That prompted him to run up onstage during the video of the year presentation and voice his displeasure (CLICK HERE TO SEE THAT HILARIOUS CLASSIC FOOTAGE)…..
-Oh, and I’m sure my ppls at Nahright.com and Hiphopmusic.com and other sites will get a kick out of this: then Kanye sarcastically thanked two of his friends for introducing him to hip hop blogs….”So I started reading the hip hop blogs…where they would say Kanye, one of his shoelaces ain’t tied…he’s a bitch……..So those are some of the things that led to ‘Stronger, that don’t kill me can only make me Stronger.‘”
*Now I have to say, there’s only one thing worse than conceit without talent…and that is humility without sincerity. So I can appreciate that Kanye is on his own dilz because he’s not pretending to be not on his own dilz….you know what I mean? It was much better than the ‘woe is me’ hiphop Rodney Dangerfield attitude from before.
ABOUT THE WARDROBE IN THE VIDEO:
-also, about the crazy Levelor-shade white sunglasses, Kanye says they are from Paris and he will be remaking them for this Pastelle clothing line this fall, and that…..
“Stronger is also a fashion statement. Its for people like us, who dress fresh and like fly shit. And if you dont like the song, than more than likely you dont know how to dress either.” lol….always entertaining ‘Ye.
OH SHIT, AND ABOUT THE VIDEO ITSELF:
Well, it’s cool visually…has a futuristic vibe which Kanye said was Hype’s whole mission from the start. There is a robotic special effect scene that reminds me of that old Bjork video by Chris Cunningham where Bjork is actually a mechanical cyborg. Then there are cool scenes around Tokyo, which visually is one of the coolest places on earth. And then there are random shots of Cassie, who is beautiful but whatever. And towards the end, Kanye performs an odd little dance move…which folks were calling his Michael Jackson Billie Jean dance. Lol….I liked the fact that he obviously tried to do something different. Its not hard to just go on the block and get some girls to dance next to a candypainted donk these days.
Also, its funny but Kanye said that originally he and Hype wanted to do this whole neon color scheme for the video….but then after the shoot he was on itunes and saw the new Maroon 5 video, and the new 50 Cent Amusement Park video….both with tons of neon. So there went that idea, lol.
**ok, I just realized how much I’ve written about maybe a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes of my tuesday evening, and I’m embarrassed. Nerd. Apologies : )**
Anyways, here’s the actual song, “Stronger”….I definitely like it. You?

um, why is it that sometimes when I make a link, its underlined, but othertimes if I link to something from my text, it shows up in blue? ugh.
June 20th, 2007 at 10:46 am
You should hardly be embarrassed or apologetic. Excellent coverage. Keep it up.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
that shit is wack.kanye should go back to just producing.i remember when i couldnt wait for kanyes 1st album.now i cant wait for his 1st retirement
June 20th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
Thanks for being the little industry bird on my shoulder as always. You never fail me.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
well i cant answer that, the default color for hrefs is blue so i dont know why the underline. maybe the parenthesis has something to do with it. but…….i’m feelin the new track, it’s an electronic feel to it which means he will be venturing on this album which is all the more reason to get it. he will bring in even more people with that.
June 20th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
respect to ‘ye an i kno maybe u an him are close info but this aint real hip hop listen to young buck’s new song “get my money” – produced by Focus – Now That’s Real Hip Hop
June 20th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
doesn’t it seem like kanye is the only rapper out that’s worth mentioning? hmmmmmmmm.
June 20th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
I dig it…some cats may not be ready for it yet though.
And your link issue may be just be the way the CSS code was writen. It looks like the cats that set it up for you set it that way, because the colors match the text colors in your header.
If you log into you wordpress admin,
1. go to Presentation>Theme Editor. (styles.css should be selected)
2. Your code starts with:
body {
margin:0;
padding:0;
font-family: ‘Trebuchet MS’, helvetica, arial, verdana;
font-size: 0.9em;
text-align:center;
color:#29303B;
line-height:1.3em;
background: #EDF5F6;
}
a {
color: #00AEEF;
text-decoration:none;
}
3. Just change text-decoration:none; to text-decoration:underline;
and you should be good. Let me know if that helped.

inre your links: might be how your blog is set up. sounds like when you post up a link your web browser has not visited, it comes up one color, but if its a site your browser has been to recently, its another… my blog does that. could just be something on your end – all of your links show up the same on my end – none of them underlined, all of them blue.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
When will Kanye just vanish? I tied of the woman.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
That bjork video is by Chris Cunningham, not Gondry.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Yeahh i really dont know why your links come up in blue or underlined..but yeah I love Kanye’s song stronger. I remember the sample from the Daft Punk song. Shit is fire. But I can’t wait to see the video.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
missinfo: If you have visited the link, it’s in black, underlined. Otherwise, it’s in blue, not underlined. It is specified in the theme you are using, you can change this or ask somebody you know to change the text color and decoration for links and/or visited links.
Thanks for the write-up btw, can’t wait to watch the video!
June 20th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Everytime some1 in hip hop is brave enough to explore and try to expand it u get some narrowminded ppl (see comment 6) saying its not “real hip hop”. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the essense of Hip Hop music about taking music that isn’t “hip hop” and turning it into “hip hop”. Thank God we’ve got ppl that are willing to experiment with Daft Punk samples and other typically “non Hip Hop” sounding music so that we can get something refreshing. I can honestly say that this song doesn’t sound like anything else on the radio right now (and thats always a good thing).

this shit gives me chills.
June 20th, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Typical Kanye, Ye always comes with a unique approach. Thats a creative mind at work right there. Startin 2 feel da track more and more, also liked how everything
“gelled” 2gether. Thought da hook was weak, but it had a good message popping. Gotz ta see this video.
@ comment 19 (Regg) I peeped your work fam, nice touch on the site.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Miss Info– your welcome. And yes gondry has done some amazing videos. The one he did for Cibo Matto is insane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPJ9TS_5tAo
Everyone else relax. Yeah, it’s a sample of Daft Punk. But it’s a sample of a vocoder part. The vocoder been used from the old school (Egyptian Lover, Grandmaster Flash) to 2 Pac’s California Love to now Kanye. So don’t act like it hasn’t been in hip hop before. Besides Lil Jon and a bunch of the southern dudes have been using a bunch of “rave” sounds for the last few years. It’s all just music, people.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Everybody wanna be a rapper. Dude need to stick to producing I respected him more.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Inf I think u should hook up with Regg. Ur page is kinda plain.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
What blogs does Kanye visit?
June 20th, 2007 at 8:25 pm
thanks for the downlow.. on the video… good reporting….. I tried to wait for the whole album to come out… it would have been my christmas… but man… YE know how to keep it coming…. talk about all other mcs just falling off after a verse or a mix tape…. kanye is relevent in hip hop his story
June 20th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
i think yal need to check your hearing.its not even that different.timbaland shit is different and hes also exploring,but the difference is timbs is hot and kanye shit sound wack.the lyrics sound kind of corny,ojs isotona?im tired of hearing about ojs glove.right now i think timb,swiss and even dj kahlid is popping more than kanye.kanye is brave but u just cant come off brave u gotta come off with that fire too.it aint what u do its how u do it.@circus-u havnt listened to timbs album obviously.

[…] Transformers film. Miss Info gave a breakdown of the ‘Stronger’ screening party on her blog, it’s a good read, well worth […]
June 20th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
I can definitely see this track being the starting point of another movement for ‘Ye. It’s interesting because he could set it all off again with this track OR “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” He could use both to take over again.
I wasn’t feeling this track a lot at first. Being a LONG TIME fan of Daft Punk, it just felt like a remix of a Daft Punk track, not a ‘ye track. The track definitely had to “grow on me,” as they say. I’m actually feeling “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” completely, when I first heard that (which was before “Stronger), I was feeling it. It’s all good though ’cause that’s hip hop, you do different things.
I’m excited to see the video. Japan is where it’s at, that’s one of my favorite spots. You can find ANYTHING in Japan. For a while people weren’t realizing the connection between Japan and hip hop and how big it is over there. Lately, U.S. hip hop has realized that.
June 20th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
Great Post. I know I might get crucified for this but Ye’ is the illest producer at the moment. I see he’s finally launching his Pastelle clothing line. Neway shots from video ook dope. Hope it live up to the full ting. zeen
June 20th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
Another dope one form Kanye. Difference and options is what hip hop needs.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:32 pm
@30 I’m not gonna kill u for the producer comment,cuz he’s a good producer, not the illest maybe ur name though, lol, but Pastelle clothing line. Dude is a mo, I dont care what nobodys says
June 20th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
Hey Miss info.Glad to see u still have ur ear to the streets. I remember when u worked for the scorce mag. asking me what I thought about illmatic. Chitown is doing big things. Cant wait for finding forever. Peace take care Minya….:LoveTae

thanks for the rundown girl! i love this song..and its one of my fav daft punk songs..i know the ignants that posted up above (see # 3)wont be able to appreciate it..i knew it would go over peoples heads when i heard it..the video looks hot =)..and im lovin the mixtape he put out..
June 21st, 2007 at 2:07 am
@trauma (see comment #27) DJ Khaled??? lmaooooo….uhm and when u say Timb u really mean Danja Handz right cause thats whose been making all of timbs tracks for about the past 2 years (Maybe daz why 80’s rock group Duran Duran is trying to link up with Danja for their next studio album). Don’t get me wrong I think timb is a genius (production wise) but Kanye is actually much better lyrically. He’s been improving over the years. I think a lot more ppl would give Kanye more credit for his lyrics if we weren’t so caught up in the SOMETIMES dumb stuff he says and SOMETIMES ridiculous stuff he wears. But its still all good.
June 21st, 2007 at 4:01 am
Kanye reads hip-hop blogs? Good lawd, I hate knowing that a person I’m writing about will read my critique.
Unless they work for a magazine. Then I want them to read it.
June 21st, 2007 at 6:58 am
Why does he look so pissed off in the first picture? Kanye is the man and all but I think he should take it easy with the clothing line, for one, please at least change the name. PASTELLE is not the first name that I would think of If I were starting a clothing line for guys.
Or maybe its for females too?
June 21st, 2007 at 3:46 pm
this is to circus or anyone else who doesnt understand REAL HIP HOP — Hip Hop is about lyrics….whatchu think i didnt listen to the whole track…i jus listened to the beat an said oh i dont like this cuz it’s techno..an ima true hip hop head so no this aint hip hop….nah i studied the corny lil kanye song..(hope he does read this) and all in all it’s corny….dont u understand why they keep coming out wit pac mixtapes–its jus diff beats with the same LYRICS…it’s rarely a diff lyric to the same BEAT…thats cuz LYRICS make hip hop i dont give a fungol if u think “adding” stuff to hip hop is hip hop than i guess u must really like the “GYM CLASS HEROES”(which to be honost, those 2 vids they came out wit is betta than most of ye’s ish, in the last year an a half) So dont say im ignorant cuz i listened to the whooole corny kanye song an the only thing that will make hip hop STRONGER if corny people like kanye would jus stop rapping….or breathin whichever comes first….BYE HATERS!! -NITTI-
June 21st, 2007 at 4:09 pm
[…] Miss Info Exclusive: Kanye’s “Stronger” screening. […]
June 21st, 2007 at 4:44 pm
kanye is definitely a better lyricist than timb-but right now im feeling timbs shit betterthan this “stronger song”
June 21st, 2007 at 5:27 pm
@ nitti (see comment #38)…..If “REAL HIP HOP” is just about lyrics please tell me why the DJ is the cornerstone of HIP HOP….Please tell me why almost everything in early Hip Hop was centered around the BREAK BEAT…please tell me why PRODUCERS (KANYE, SWISS, PHARREL, TIMB) have been making better albums than regular rappers for about the past 2-3 years. To ME…Hip Hop is about Music+Lyrics+Culture+Relevance+Entertainment+Experimentation. I’m NOT saying Kanye is the best rapper. But he does what he does very well. He’s not a killer, he never moved weight, and he aint bustin no heads….so he finds creative ways to rap about subject matter that is true to him. And by the way, any1 who wants some1 to “stop rapping or stop breathing…whichever comes first” is definitely a HATER. Yo cuz how can u hate some1 u’ve never met and doesn’t even know u exist?…damn u a cornball. get right with urself kicko.
June 21st, 2007 at 7:15 pm
I’m with u all the way Nitti
June 22nd, 2007 at 1:35 am
im also wid u nitty-its time for circus to shut up cuz u outnumbered-u insulting everyones intelligence-i dont just listen to poeple who move weight or murked someone-i love native tongues-tribe, jbs dela.but kanye shit is so corny-please stop talking about ojs glove that joke is so old.i love kanyes 1st album but this song is garbage-no matter what u do-if u want to experiment or play it safe like fitty.just bring that fire-both kanyes experiment and fitty play it safe amusement park with weak metaphores is wack.this aint ringley brothers,so take ur circus elsewhere
June 22nd, 2007 at 4:25 am
@ comment 43…..I THINK SOME1 is mad cause they’re making comments and CONTINUALLY getting schooled or exposed.U sound like the kind of dude who would need to have the “numbers” on ya side to even have a voice u half a flamer…btw I chose the name circus for this blog thing cause thats what a lot of Hip Hop has become…so putting together that little metaphor prolly took u all night, but don’t feel to proud kausion (gay rapper) OH i MEANT trauma….LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO….every1 has the right to their opinion. This is not “post a comment and try to make a friend day” so do urself the favor and jump off my n*tz homie.
June 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 am
EXACTLY!!! so circus looks like u jus gott CLOWNED my dude…but neways its all opionion so its all love…jus keep bumpin ya ‘ye an all the producers stuff while me an the rest of the peeps who kno hip hop…keep that shit alive…an if ‘ye dont kno who i am he will soon….shout out info, whoever and whomever backed me, an circus jus one more thing “music is entertainment homie u gott no relevance to ya lil experimentation” so take that shit elsewhere cuz we listen to LYRICS DUKE LYRICS but im outt this post on to BUCK
June 22nd, 2007 at 3:11 pm
[…] drops knowledge on the new Kanye video. I know we’re all supposed to shit on the backpacker – being a blogger and all – but fuck […]
June 22nd, 2007 at 5:08 pm
@circus-it looks like ur kanye is the gay rapper wid that female sounding clothing line.take ur clowns and circus outta town.nobodies mad.i never heard of teachers in a circus so u not schooling nobody,it seems like u should be listening to z100 or some alternative cuz this new ye shit aint playing on my speakers-u just mad me,nitti and eniggama know real good hip hop and u clowns r lonely-u will find more freinds @z100 -they need the circus @ the morning z00-u on the wrong site-this is real hiphop-so when u pack up and take ur circus somewhere else accidently step on ur white sunglasses
June 22nd, 2007 at 6:01 pm
i’m feelin what circus sayin. the whole reason hip-hop is where it is now is because of experimentation. now all of a sudden you cant hear r&b, pop, and some rock without hip-hop influence and thats because of hip-hops experimentation. so what kanye sampled a daft punk electronica song. the experimentation brings entertainment because it keeps the shit new. if you water it down with the same shit over and over it gets old and boring. none of you dickheads hatin on timb when he does the same thing. on top of that, yall contradict yourselves. nitti if you like lyrics, kanye got that, timb dont but u say kanye is corny and timb isnt??? kanye is respsonsible for keepin hip-hop goin for a period of time producin and makin hot tracks, period. it just boils down to you clowns being closed minded.
June 22nd, 2007 at 6:12 pm
and to add to that………i guarantee you some of your favorite MCs will spit to that joint EASY. i know jay, mos, talib, common, slum village already had their own version, pharrell already has his own version, but they would easily hop on that joint and give you 16 hot bars. and if THEY wouldn’t be closed-minded about the track, none of you flames should be either seeing how they ARE hip-hop at it’s finest. track is fire and there is no better daft punk track to sample than that. i bet you lames thought the aerosmith and run dmc colab back in the day wasnt real hip hop either??? that kind of experimentation is what keeps ALL music going.
June 23rd, 2007 at 12:32 am
cris cris cris tisk tisk tisk ” know jay, mos, talib, common, slum village” besides maybe some old talib/common, why r u callin these dudes lyricists (about timbo hes been doin THE SAME shit for years, he hasnt tried to put techno with hip hop, but he’s pretty corny too lol) gettin bac to the LYRICISTS homie u shoulda said big, pac, big l, big pun, saigon, papoose, the game, young buck, c’mon man i kno mos of them artists is dead but thats why nas feels free to say hip hop is dead, i dont listen to hip hop i make hip hop, go to myspace type in frank nitti look for my ass i live in selden an tell me im the worst rapper u’ve ever heard. an i’ll kno y, cuz u cant understand people who come from nothin but make somethin outta of it anyway…so go go right now to myspace an type in frank nitti g-recs- an listen to some real hip hop…much love i kno i said i was done but mr. ronaldo hadda open that hole in his face..so much negativity, call me a loser but i aint talkin trash til y’all talked trash an thats real talk..from a real person..who understands reall hip hop….
June 23rd, 2007 at 12:33 am
oh an to add to that none of my fav. lyricists will ever EVER spit to that song…PERIOD shout out info me loves u long time….
June 23rd, 2007 at 1:17 am
its not that we have a problem with the sample for the last fucking time-its that the lyrics is wack.the song is wack-the oj joke is wack.now if jay z had this beat this song would probably be hot.kanye made this shit sound even more corny.real hip hop is the mental.its how u do it -not what u do.swiss is biting rakim,but hes making it sound fresh,its how u do it,and kanye isnt doing it with this song.i bet this song goes nowhere fast on hip hop radio-but might hit on corny ass 103.5
June 23rd, 2007 at 4:44 am
yo this dude named 4 people that are dead, 2 that havent dropped an album yet and are relatively new compared to the tenured and game and young buck over 3 legends and one potential???? the game and young buck over talib, common, def, hov??? just shut up now. i dont care how nice you think you are, you just named those dudes over who a concensus of peope consider pure hip-hop. to add to that, i bet budden would spit over that joint knowin him and kiss prolly woulda added a 16 too.
now you speak of so much negativity. you were actually the one bein negative about the whole track, kanye as a whole, and thinking that because you write, your opinion is more valuable. Everybody i named came from nothin to somethin you dickhead. you are just stupid period. i refuse to listen to any wack ass garbage you make based on the fact that you are a closed-minded asshole that picked the game, young buck and 2 people that havent dropped an album over people that are considered to be hip-hop elite. no more words to the ignorant from me.

did kanye mention anything about daft punk at all? everyones been sampling/collaborating with daft punk. Daft actually came out with an album called daft club, where N.E.R.D. has a remix of the same song “harder, better, faster, stronger” that kanye samples from… and remix tracks from slum village and basement jaxx too. daft for life.

Info maybe u knew this and just forgot to say it,but the WHOLE VIDEO IS BASED ON THE CLASSIC ANIME MOVIE “AKIRA”. And I’m not hatin, i just wish somebody(Kanye) would acknowledge that the video was not his or Hype’s idea,it was dare i say it……sampled! but if he did say its based off the movie than my bad lol.
PEACE!!!!!!

Hype directed (jacked) the whole video concept and visual art from Akira and turned Kanye into one of the main characters named Tetsuo. The beat is just a sample from Daft Punk (duh) – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger with some pretty decent beat behind it.
I haven’t seen any cred. from hype or kanye. I want to see someone take scenes from the movie and dub it to the song.
