Kanye West’s “Monster” video featuring Rick Ross, Jay-Z, two Nicki Minaj’s, and lovely bunch of bored zombies…

Seems like someone’s been watching Fruit Chan, Takashi Miike, and Chan-wook Park flicks….and any of the superstylized glam-horror directors that have been blowing up from Hong Kong, Japan and Korea in the past 10 years. If you haven’t seen 3 Extremes, which features short films from all three directors above, it’s really weird and fascinating. Rent it. I’m betting Kanye has.
But as for “Monster”….seeing Kanye get an aggressive shiatsu from a bunch of models zombies is a little heavy-handed (pun intended). And maybe the she-wolf and the severed head is just out of season. Hov’s segment says to me “I’m just going to go to my happy place and pretend this concept isn’t happening.” But Nicki steals the show visually the same way she did lyrically, giving herself a dominatrix lapdance, and giving many fanboys a tingling sensation.
I can’t wait to see the highbrow breakdowns of what Kanye’s dead-eye models “symbolize.” That’s always amusing.
(trailer for the 3 Extremes movie that I mentioned, after the jump)

Yeah I think teh high brow breakdown will be more entertaining then the vid it self.
I think I still like Redman,EPMD,Meth & Lady Luck’s Horror show better in Symphony 2000.

Wow- This puts things in perspective-Kanye was treated like a murderer after Taylor Swify incident
Great video -pushing boundaries again

Im disappointed in Ricky and Jay. More so Jay coz he’s really removed from what’s happening in the video.
I also wish nicki was involved in more of the video and not just during her verse.
But other than that it’s a very good video.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:17 am
Nicki won w/ her verse and her portion of this video. I dunno wtf Kanye was trying to accomplish here, esp when Hov is definitely like “ok just put the dead girl on the couch” with his segment, but whatever. Glad it’s not just more shaking asses and maybachs.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:21 am
Wow @nightfall for the throwback ref. Damn, I remember that vid. Watching that one the rest of today, ha!
December 30th, 2010 at 11:24 am
That’s cuz each person in Symphony 2000 had roles in our favorite movies.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:36 am
Agreed. that was a dope video.
December 30th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
I guarantee if Hov got more involved with the action in the video, there would be a 100 breakdowns on how it is related to the Mason, devil worhip, Illuminati, or some other b.s.
December 30th, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Oldboy is shit. Takashi Miike is always great to watch. I’d take Zebraman 1 and 2 over most of our superhero movies.
As for the video meh. Jay and Ross are so out of their element. And Kanye’s section is boring and there were far too many close up shots of lips. Nicki’s portion is the only serviceable one, granted I still have issues with it. Namely how they paired up the verses between the two Nicki’s, but I like the idea.

WOW! Crazy video. Will appeal to all the people who like SAW and all that horror stuff. Artistic yes. For me…no. So weird how he can sign an artist like CARMEN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx8oo_31Wt0&feature=player_embedded who is pop and so far away from something like this. I hope he doesn’t screw it up.
December 30th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Jay’s always the ‘removed’ element. Thinking of the totally irrelevant verse from Diamonds.
December 30th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
how r u gonna critique a unfinished rough cut stupid blogs
December 30th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
WORD, THE SYMPHONY 2000 VIDEO IS WAY BETTTER 3 T’S
I SEE WHERE THE CONCEPT COMES FROM, WOW WOMEN HANGING AT THE START OF THE VIDEO YEAH THIS IS NOT GETTING PLAYED WONDER WHERE’S THE MR. CLEAN VERSION
December 30th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Rick Ross is so unnecessary for this song… you know what would have been dope? If Nas had an added verse..hes sitting on the couch playing with a 2yr old boy and next to him is a black woman with green hair, dead with a milkshake sittin in front of her on the coffee table..that would have gotten some attention.lol
December 30th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
1) I don’t want to see Kanye’s grill like that more than once
2) This glorification of the macabre and paganism needs to stop
3) I’m not saying he made a deal with the devil, but Kanye West and Robert Johnson probably have a lot in common.
4) They could have made this fun and exciting. Imagine if they dressed as famous monsters like Godzilla or King Kong, that would have been funny and lighthearted. Or what if they made a parody of the Power Rangers enemies, that would have put a cool twist on the theme. Instead they went ridiculously dark BULLSH!T!
December 30th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
It’s funny how watching Monster instantly reminded me of Symphony 2000. Monster’s like the poppy version of that.
hip hop heads think alike.
December 30th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
But where would Kanye put the models!
December 30th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Kanye is still corny. Nicki OWNED this video like she did the song.
December 30th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Did you really think, with the content of the verses and the tone of the song, that they were going to go funny and lighthearted with this one? This aint ‘Check it Out with Will.I.Am as black gumby. I had a feeling it was gonna be dark, but I didn’t see that opening scene coming. Props to Ye for having the courage to do it but I hope there’s a PG-13 version out so it can get some air time.
December 30th, 2010 at 6:12 pm
PLUS, You actually see all the MC together in regular scenes along with the horror movie parts.
This Monster vid has the similar theme but no interaction between the artists……if you don’t count Nicki interacting with herself.
December 30th, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Technically, why does it need “air time”?…..we all watch this stuff on computers now anyway. lol
December 30th, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Please dont get them started…
December 30th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Ross need to chill with that “Big Poppa” persona. >:(
December 30th, 2010 at 6:23 pm
So rough they haven’t even paid Getty Images for the stock footage shots… you’re gonna sued Kanye!
* Black suits step out of the shadows *
Now that’s scary.
December 30th, 2010 at 6:32 pm
Jay’s verse the best, people say Niki killed it coz she just goes crazy with the voice switchin and the caribeean flavor in her verse, Ross wasn t necessary lol he ain t even ad libbed his verse, he just sits there, Kanye’s mind too artistic to just shoot a regular video man
December 30th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Ye, nor jigga are Masons.
December 30th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
All this talk of its illuminati and its too dark and blah blah…This is entertainment so if you don’t like it don’t watch it. What did the people and media say when Michael Jackson did Thriller??????? It was the same thing…and that man redefined music and music videos forever. Kanye continues to push things to the next level and push people minds.. All this looked like was a zombies of the dead video OR Thriller of our time. POP Culture was popular when Michael did Thriller…Hip Hop is popular today…Hence the Monster Video…
December 30th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Finally! SOmeone agrees with me! Jay definitely had the best verse but nobody is seeing that.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
i’d say runaway is more the thriller of our time, considering the length and amount of “i’m gonna do this for me” that ‘Ye put into Runaway, as MJ did for Thriller. don’t make those comparisons b/c both deal with the macabre – b/c frankly, monster is no where NEAR thriller in terms of epicness.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
The severed head really broke the deal. Am seconding Stillers above when he/she said Kanye and Robert Johnson probably have a lot in common. Where theres God, the Devil also abides whether you admit it or not. he’s waiting at the door waiting to cut a deal. always. The severed head really isn’t cool Kanye. Especially after what those Taliban affiliates to Nick the journalist a few years ago. i just hope Kanye’s disappointing album sales isn’t a sign that his popularity is waning. May be he needs to drop this new arty persona and go with the good old Mr. West.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
“Thriller of our time.” You must have found the rest of G-Dep’s stash.
December 31st, 2010 at 12:19 am
what are u a kid? power rangers? you wanted them to dress up like king kong?
smh@ this lame
December 31st, 2010 at 12:23 am
the taliban? lmao
maybe hip hop is too much for you
December 31st, 2010 at 2:22 am
That’s because this is not the actual finished version. You will hear kanye spazing in a few days about this “leak”.
You don’t see the little numbers running when kanye’s by the door? you don’t see how dark this video is? you can barley see anything. you don’t see that the voices are out of sync?
December 31st, 2010 at 5:42 am
genius! that woulda been tight.
December 31st, 2010 at 7:24 am
Disappointing album sales?? What chart u looking at?
December 31st, 2010 at 1:21 pm
100% co-sign. Jay had the best verse, he went in and addressed certain ppl. He is the best. I don’t give a damn about nicki and her pyscho voices.
December 31st, 2010 at 1:26 pm
If you like viewing people eating aborted babies 3 Extremes is for you….ama pass on that one I guess I’m old fashion and not artsy enough :s
December 31st, 2010 at 3:31 pm
That post is the result of people who open their mouths (or computers) & spout about shit they know NOTHING about!!!
Nocca said the TALIBAN???
LOL @ Brooklyn…
…that dude need to get outside from time to time!
p.s. @ steventhathack-
The Taliban listens to hip hop you know. They like the hard edged lyrics, get them HYPE son!!!
*unlimited sarcasm*
December 31st, 2010 at 4:26 pm
This is the problem with people like you on the internet. you dont read you skim. If you are not up on the news a militia group claiming to be part of the taliban kidnapped a young american journalist and beheaded him on live tv. Am not making shit up. I wasnt even trying to make a connection between hip hop and the taliban. I was saying Kanye holding a severed head was in bad taste. That is all. If you read my post more slowly you should have realised this. This also goes for everyone else. Am just saying the severed head was in bad taste.
December 31st, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Uh the one where he hasnt gone platinum after more than a month out. Thats the one am looking at. DISAPPOINTING. Even he knows that. Am sure hes hard at work at that new lp with Jay Z to make sure it gets proper heat. MBDTF was a disappointment sales wise.
January 1st, 2011 at 9:20 am
The best part of the video was Nicki bent over. If we can get a better video with more light, especially at that part, this video would be great.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:49 am
people just feening for nicki to be great so anything versus that wouldnt match up smh ..pulling up in an auto mobile tonka the color of willing wonk …wahhhhhhhh lol ok anyway
