Kanye West Flips Out on ‘Sway In The Morning’ (Full Interview)
Posted by Andy B. under Interviews , Videos[50] Comments
If you think Kanye West “turned up” in his Zane Lowe interview, just wait ’til you hear this one. During his busy press run in NYC — which also saw him chat with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez and Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg — Ye sat down with Sway Calloway (y’know, the guy whose first ever TV was a gift from Mr. West) for an interview on Sway In The Morning, and it was easily his loudest one yet.
The two enjoyed a friendly chat about A Tribe Called Quest, working with Jay Z and his ideas, before Sway quizzed Kanye about his frustrations with the fashion industry and asked, “why don’t you empower yourself, and do it yourself?” Eh-err! Wrong answer, Sway. And that’s when Kanye flipped.
Kanye: How, Sway!? You ain’t got the answers, Sway! I been doing this more than you! You ain’t been doing the education! You don’t have the answers, though, because you tryna give me advice about something. You ain’t spend $13 million a year tryna empower yourself…What’s the name of yo clothing line? We don’t know… I just told you I lost the money ’cause I didn’t have the knowledge of how to do it the right way!
Sway: Okay, so you don’t have money to do it. That’s yo answer. You ain’t gotta turn up, man. This ain’t no fucking show, man.
Cooler heads eventually prevailed. But having revealed he lost $13 million trying to launch his own clothing line, it’s no surprise Kanye’s mad.
Listen to the full interview after the jump…

I see kanye is on the radio circuit this past week or so. good for him, i like his music and really like yeezus. i will not be listening to this or any of his interviews this week cause the guy is a disrespectful, twat. i know no one cares what i think on this site, or anywhere really, but i just wanted to say that. I will just ignore all of this and listen to the music.

Sway handled that amazingly tho, most of these radio personalities would have been shook as fuck or overcompensated and escalated the situation into something else entirely and not have anymore access to kanye or any of his artists+ peoples he associates with.

I agree 100%
“Man to man, we can turn off these mics” means “If you wanna fight, we can step outside.”
The synopsis makes it sound like Sway said something wrong. Kanye was being the prima donna bitch he usually is and talk down to people but Sway didn’t allow it. Good for him.

there is some truth in what ye is saying …. to me he is just saying it the wrong way … there is levels to get anything done it may be a longer way but it can happen … from what i get from these ye interviews is he wants what some people in the fashion industry took yrs and decades to get across TODAY and in this world this life we lead this society and being a black man its not gonna happen overnight … he is tryin to break barriers in the fashion culture but the way hes going about it is wrong …. if he wants to be like his big brother hov he need to go back and really talk to jay about negotiation and business cuz going on radio and name droppin and dissing people hes asking for help only burn bridges …. you have to learn how to pick your battles .. it may be fuk up but EVERYBODY has done it its no shortcuts …. if it was they would’ve been a blueprint to it now … he needs to shut up and go back to square one … i love ye to def i think he does have good ideas but NOBODY wants to work with somebody that gets so emotionally angry when he doesn’t get his way … that’s just the way of life … and he now at 36 has to understand that

Best. caption. ever.

I think Kanye just tired of the politics of shit. I can feel his pain, but he letting it get to him. Its the BS that goes on. An example is this page here. MORE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM BLASTING THAN LISTENING TO THE REST OF WHAT HE HAD TO SAY. Propaganda is a bitch I tell you. Hold ya head Kanye that is what will get you through all this bs. You have a point but no one want to listen because of how you do it.

he already explained in the zane lowe interview that it’s about “infrastructure”. doing what he wants to do on the level he wants to do it, he needs billion dollar backing. he also said in the breakfast club interview that he doesn’t wanna hear from anyone without the means giving him any advice. the sway question is a combination of these 2 things.
fact is that most ppl are not used to artists speaking out, we’re too conditioned to corporate shills these days, carefully planned, manufactured, and sound bited to the tee in order to sell, sell, sell. all this is in direct opposite to the consciousness of the late 60’s artists and an era that yielded the civil rights movement, women’s rights, and the gay rights movement.
we’re all expecting artists to “shut up and sing” and that’s not the great american legacy. i say kudos to kanye for actually speaking his mind, whether I agree or not I can respect that in a land full of robots.

Hes always going to get backlashed because he speaks the TRUTH. I don’t see why he gets so much heat for speaking the TRUTH.

Rappers have become slaves to peoples’ perceptions – he’s right – like pop those with convictions are rare species.
November 26th, 2013 at 8:34 pm
I can see that most of the people in the comments didn’t listen to the whole interview. Kanye and Sway got into a little tiny argument over nothing and Kanye even apologized to Sway for yelling at him. It’s not a big deal.
November 26th, 2013 at 8:38 pm
I see some of y’all don’t have active listening skills. YES is DELIVERY is WRONG. BUT What he has been saying is total truth. If you want to do fashion you need to come from money or have a major backing…PERIOD. If Kanye is not making songs he is not making money. Let me put it to y’all like this….Unemployment is at 7.9%, if you are unemployed and filling out dozens of applications and you are not getting call backs when you know you have the skills required and you have references (fans) out the ass to also prove it, why are you not getting the call backs or being recognized?? The exact same thing he is saying. All people worry about is him ranting but not listening to why. He brings up MLK and Malcolm X because the stood up against racism and segregation. You need people to stand up to the issues.

But on the real I think Kanye needs a break.

Amen to that!

Man he is losing his mind, dude is off his rocker.
November 26th, 2013 at 9:18 pm
There much Truth in what Ye is sayings BUT as he knows and admits to, he delivery sucks. He has that old school Dame Dash delivery style when he gets fired up.
Respect to Sway for handling that though.
What Kanye is speaking on about limited access is true across the board, Fashion, Hollywood all the way down to comic books. He wants to attack it at the top and thats fine. What Kanye misses is that his attack plan isn’t the only one. Some folk gotta do the ground level up approach and thats fine too.
November 26th, 2013 at 9:21 pm
I respect kanye speaking the truth anyone that doesn’t agree “Lack and Limitation”

What makes Kanye think that because he likes expensive clothes he could start a successful fashion line? No wonder he lost money, plenty of black men are successful in the fashion game, he’s not because he’s a pretentious moron nothing to do with being black.
November 27th, 2013 at 12:41 am
Kanye what was your purpose? I love Sway because he handled Mr West immaculately. The streets was about to speak to KWest ass. I love how Sway say he don’t understand his logic.

I agree w. you 100%. Louis Vuitton started in the 1800’s, same for a lot of these high fashion european brands. He’s talking to Sway about education, lol. Bruh is a joke right now. I’m done w. him.

“The more Real u get, the more unreal the world gets ” think outside the box “Lack and Limitation”

I think that what Kanye is saying is perfectly relevant and true to his situation, but what he is not seeing is that the way he thinks things should be and the way a business truly works are two different things. If I am a manufacturer with a product that will fly off the shelves and another that will end up just sitting for the most part of course I am going to try to get these businesses to take these products together that is just smart planning because it means giving the ppl what they want and at the same time getting greater profits for some of the lesser sought after products. Its not neccesarily about marginalizing him as an artist as much as it is about making the smartest choice from a buiness standpoint.

If I am a manufacturer with a product that is hot and another that will end up sitting, of course I am going to try to get these businesses to take these products together that is just smart planning. It’s not necessarily about marginalizing him as an artist as much as it is about making the smartest choice from a business standpoint.

why does sway keep asking him the saaaame question like jeeesus he just told you why he cant do it alone and you go and tell him to do it alone so you want him to lose another 13 million damn he really isnt THAT rich he needs help!
November 27th, 2013 at 10:52 am
Kanye is an explosive prima dona. Make people like you and they may buy your clothes. People don’t like your attitude, they won’t buy your clothes. Quit being a douche.
November 27th, 2013 at 11:10 am
UG! Cut the attitude bro. You are too full of yourself.
November 27th, 2013 at 11:38 am
lool why did u just say the same thing like 400 times… i agree for the most part but i think that they just scared he might overshadow the importance of a manufacturer or something coz if its good business why arent the red octobers out that wouldve been the biggest shoe all year
November 27th, 2013 at 12:24 pm
That was actually a great interview. If you watch the whole thing, they patch things up pretty quickly and keep it moving. Sway also asks great questions and Ye gives full, complete answers to them (even though I felt his answer about why Big Sean and Pusha T weren’t on the Yeezus tour didn’t seem like a very good answer). I guess the gist is, Kanye is upset because he invested millions in fashion and people in that industry still don’t think he’s serious. But he knows how hard it was for him to break into rap, even *after* being a platinum producer, so he should have expected that…still sucks, but businesspeople are short-sighted all the time.
November 27th, 2013 at 12:27 pm
Props to Sway for not whipping his azz, that was clearly his first instinct. Kanye is running around calling host slaves and then calling his so called inspirations niggers? Thats so contradictory IMO and part of a pattern he displays. His inability to have a fluid flow of consciousness in a conversation is maddening for me.
Kanye “THINKS” he is the most relevant this, most known that and whatever else. Apparently as he has clearly found out, he is not all he thinks he is. Nor is that so called woman he is with Kim. These companies don’t take him seriously and these spoiled child tantrums on radio don’t help his cause.
His point when made fluent line of speech is that Black designers are not being given the shot to create high end clothing lines like Ralph Lauren and his Purple Label for instance. However what he seems to miss is that he hasn’t done anything yet. And it RL took decades to reach that point. He didn’t do it out the gate. So I appreciate the point that he isn’t taken seriously.
Moreover who wants to take the irate, hostile, belligerent, self inflated dude with the woman whore, wanna be socialite and baby momma as baggage seriously.
I wear a ton of RL clothing, from sweatpants/shirts to suits and several watches from them as well. They make a quality product, the have a quality reputation and the product is long lasting.
Perhaps Kanye is a great designer but frankly his display of fashion sense comes off poorly and haphazard. He needs to make a choice on whether he wants to make friends or make enemies. And then act accordingly, but not making friends in ANY business tends to end poorly.
November 27th, 2013 at 1:23 pm
I love Kanye! “What’s the name of your clothing line, man? We don’t knowwwwwww”. He’s right … “marginalization”. Kanye is new money … old money is saying no. Let me in now! Let me in now .. We are all slaves!

I have my popcorn out, hot and ready.
Kanye’s story will end with a domestic abuse case against him, after he assaults Kim K. in her sleep.
BTW, I think the best part of this interview was when he started dissing Louis Vuitton. Firstly, I thought he was Louis Vitton Don. And secondly, they’re probably breathing a sight of relief.

Revolutionary over fashion? GTFOH.
Want the fruit without any labor. Start your own shit Ye. He’s using the truth about institutional racism for his own personal gain. How many black designers will he hire if he gets on? Fake revolutionaries

I don’t care about rich people problems. I enjoyed hearing Kanye turn apologetic (bitch) when Sway was ready to fight.

Yes, it’s hard for a black man to break into the fashion industry, yes it takes years of work, yes you need to know the right people; BUT YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PRRSENT YOURSELF AS THE BRAND! Kanye is short tempered and his only way of solving his problems is lashing out. Mfz would be out their mind to invest in him knowing that his personality can be a detriment to the investment. Nobody is going to invest billions, let alone millions, into someone who struggles keeping his composure in public. It doesn’t even matter why he’s lashing out. It’s business, and that’s bad business. There’s more appealing ways to make your point. At the end of the day, yea Ye is right. But what is he doing to help himself?
