Kanye West Discusses Production Style, J Dilla & Being Snubbed by Rawkus on Juan Epstein (Preview)
Posted by Andy B. under Interviews , Videos[8] Comments

Forget the headlines, the gossip and the rants; Kanye West on Juan Epstein equals nothing but real talk. In addition to announcing his new deal with adidas on The Angie Martinez Show on Hot 97, Ye sat down with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg yesterday for a rap nerd conversation of all rap nerd conversations.
Kanye opened up about his production style, drawing influence from No I.D., Pete Rock and Q-Tip, how he was trying to imitate ATCQ’s Midnight Marauders on The College Dropout, borrowing money from his “crackhead” stepbrother to buy a sampler, why he considers J Dilla a “genius,” and why he thinks drums are his achilles heel. He also hilariously put Rawkus on blast for snubbing him for their Soundbombing album back in the day.
The full Kanye West x Juan Epstein podcast drops next week on iTunes.

of course Kanye’s drums are weak. Any hip hop fan could have told you that. It’s funny to me how these newbies keep telling me “KANYE’S THE BEST PRODUCER EVER” and I’m looking at em like they’re crazy.
In hip hop, if your drums don’t bang, you’re not that great of a producer. Period.
I respect some of Ye’s work, and he has some classic beats. But his output is so vastly overrated it’s insane.

@Mr Truf, there’s more to a track than drums that “bang” otherwise Lex Luger would be the best producer of all time. And besides,Ye’s drums have always hit harder than Premo, Pete Rock, and a lot of the greats. Does that make him better than them???
Ye is dope cause he produces SONGS, not just beats. He makes music. He combines samples with live instrumentation, keyboards, chants, choirs, etc. He’s produced hits for John Legend, Brandy, Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole…
and then done dope shit for Freeway, Mobb Deep, Beanie Sigel…
Not to mention underground heads like Kweli, Mos Def, Dilated Peoples, Slum Village.
And legends like Jay, Drake, Nas, Scarface
He’s made some of the best songs for the biggest artists in the world. That’s why he’s a great producer.
…but if you want drums that knock harder, hit up Drumma Boy.

what?! who’s saying shit about Lex Luger and Drumma Boy? I don’t give a fuck about them.
I’m talking about that hard-edged funky soulful shit. The stuff that made hip hop pretty much what it is. Which Kanye was always trying to do but couldn’t nail so he started doing fusion rap. I respect it but let’s keep it 100 here.
And you saying that Kanye’s drums bang harder than Premo, Pete Rock and other greats shows you don’t know what I’m talking about. Did you even watch the video?
Kanye said exactly what I said. His weak point is drums compared to greats he mentioned: Premo, Pete Rock, Dilla, Timbaland and Neptunes.
I know you’re a Kanye rider and that’s cool and all, but please try and understand what I’m saying first.

forget being the best producer, this dude is the best artist of this generation, period.
November 26th, 2013 at 4:24 pm
Dashing; None of us could have said that better.
November 26th, 2013 at 5:31 pm
yeah he’s up there. I’d agree with that.
except this generation is wack as fuck so it’s like being king of the idiots, lol
November 27th, 2013 at 11:36 am
well the dude did call Drake a legend, says it all really
November 27th, 2013 at 6:18 pm
@Big D, lmao my dude. I didn’t even notice that. Yeah, should have known.
