john oliver ferguson

If you’re unfamiliar with the show Last Week Tonight, it involves British comedian John Oliver trying to make sense of some of the most alarming, ludicrous or indeed immoral things taking place in the US. And during last night’s segment, Oliver turned his dry wit and sharp judgement to the depressing situation in Ferguson, MO — specifically, why the hell does the police have armored vehicles and assault rifles for peaceful protests?

Continue after the jump…

Between pathetic, oblivious comments from the St. Louis Police Chief, the Mayor of Ferguson and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, Oliver highlighted just how terrible the law enforcement’s response to both Michael Brown’s shooting and the ensuing protests have been. While peppering the segment with his usual jokes, he also brought to light the deep-seated racism in Ferguson’s police department, like showing a clip of an off-duty officer referring to a crowd of protestors as “fucking animals.”

Saving the best ’til last, Oliver summed up the situation perfectly while simultaneously sonning the entire Ferguson Police Department: “I know the police love their ridiculous, unnecessary military equipment, so here’s another patronizing test: Let’s take it all away from them, and if they can make it through a whole month without killing a single unarmed black man, then — and only then — can they get their fucking toys back.”

michael brown autopsy

In other news, a privately-paid autopsy reveals that Michael Brown was shot at least six times by officer Darren Wilson, including twice in the head. One of these bullets struck Brown at the top of his skull, suggesting that he was bent forward when he was shot, causing a fatal injury. There was no gunpowder residue found on Brown’s body, suggesting that no shots were fired at close range. However, if gunpowder residue is found on Brown’s clothing (which Dr. Michael M. Baden, who carried out the autopsy, didn’t have access to), that would tell a very different story. [via New York Times]
