With his first interview since the release of his new album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, J. Cole sits down with NPR Microphone Check hosts Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Frannie Kelly. Over their hour-plus conversation, the Roc Nation opens up about the concept behind his latest LP, going into detail about his childhood memories at the house and why he was so unhappy after moving away. Cole also reveals plenty of interesting tidbits about the project itself, like the fact it was originally planned as a double album and how “St. Tropez” almost became a Kendrick Lamar song.
Outside of the album, Cole touches on Ferguson and his powerful “Be Free” tribute to Michael Brown, his relationship with Kendrick Lamar and being inspired by Bob Marley. These next 72 minutes are a must-listen for any Cole fan.
