Freddie Gibbs has been formally charged with sexual assault in Austria, according to the AP. The Gary, IN rapper was arrested in France in June after a woman accused him of drugging and raping her while on tour in Vienna in July 2015. Gibbs, 34, was recently extradited to Austria to face the charges.

“He is alleged to have administered knock-out drops to a woman and then have abused her sexually while she was in a defenceless state,” a spokesman for Vienna’s criminal court said. Gibbs’ bodyguard was also accused of sexually assaulting another woman that same night, although it’s unclear whether he has also been charged.
Gibbs’ lawyers “strenuously” deny the accusations. “While Freddie Gibbs was charged with an offence today, it remains only an allegation, and it does not in any way change the actual facts that Freddie Gibbs is 100% innocent,” said Theodore Simon.
“As the investigation and process continues, Mr. Gibbs remains hopeful that a thorough, searching and complete investigation will reveal the actual facts, including the absence of any scientific, physical, or credible evidence implicating him, thereby paving the way for his exoneration and return to his family and one-year-old child.”
If convicted, Gibbs faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
UPDATE: Freddie Gibbs was released on bail today after posting €50,000 ($56,560). Gibbs also surrendered his passport and remains in Austria. “We believe this is the first step toward his eventual exoneration and vindication,” Gibbs’ lawyer, Theodore Simon, told Pitchfork.
