fifty shades of grey EW cover

The Fifty Shades of Grey book trilogy…if you didn’t notice every woman on the train reading it, or chattering at the coffee shop about getting tied up and ravished by a mysterious rich dude…is a big deal. They sold 70 million copies in 8 months, making author E.L.James $95 million dollars in 2013, and now, of course, there’s a movie version.
The Today Show debuted the trailer this morning, so check out actress Dakota Johnson (daughter of Miami Vice‘s Don Johnson) as Anastasia Steele, and Jamie Dornan (from Once Upon a Time) as Christian Grey…

I tried to get on the Fifty Shades of Grey bandwagon…hated it…and jumped off. I understand that the whips and chains romance between a mousey grad student and a rich dominating corporate dude got millions of women all hot in the pants, and that housewives felt all naughty reading about what is basically a consenting abusive adult relationship…but, if I want slicked over Fabio romance novels wrapped in Gimp latex, I’m pretty sure they have that on SCinemax or some Red Shoe Diary? Matter fact, if you want to see a classic movie about a steamy but batshit crazy romance gone wrong…I strongly suggest watching that Mickey Rourke x Kim Basinger flick, 9 1/2 Weeks. Directed by Adrian Lyne, who also did Indecent Proposal (about a man who sells a night with his wife for a million bucks) and Fatal Attraction (about your psycho ex-girlfriend).

As an avid book devourer, I’m not proud of some of my literary choices. There’s plenty of YA (Young Adult) in there that’s borderline inappropriately immature, like the book about the Irish teenagers who fall in love while riding mythical sea horses, The Scorpio Races. Hey, it was actually really well written. But at least indulging in science fiction and YA dystopian fantasy has got to be better for my right-side brain creativity than these adult repressed romance books? Maybe I’m being a low-culture snob…look, it’s a good thing when folks are inspired to read any book, even if it’s soft-core pulp, so…Go Grey!
