When we debuted the Gucci Mane feat. Nicki Minaj and Pharrell song, “Haterade”….I mentioned that last month, I caught up with Gucci out in LA after his video shoot with Swizz Beats.
And last year around this same time, Gucci took me to East Atlanta’s Bouldercrest projects, to discuss hustling, beef, and regret. But what a difference a year makes. While I’d characterize Los Angeles as a sort of “trap” too, this time, the craft services were better; Philippe’s chicken satay and green prawns (aka the rapper-happy-meal, lol)….

Gucci and I talked about his post-jail, post-beef album, The Appeal (dropping next Tues, Sept 28), his  Waka Flocka and Deb Antney… and his rarely discussed family. In part one (above), he says his approach to the music business has changed since last year’s stint in jail, and why….

PS: Hip hop purists debate the merits of Gucci and his ilk all the time, and I consider myself a purist too (by experience, lol)…but it’s never kept me from enjoying classic Gucci songs (like “I Think I Love Her” and my favorite “Heavy”, etc ; ), or from appreciating the fact that he always been exceedingly friendly and respectful. The man has struggled with many demons, and had many trials…but he never comes off as bitter and soured.

(There will be more footage from the interview I’m sure. But much love to my blog colleagues, thank you so much for the support, and I apologize in advance for any babbling or awkward segues, lol…and thanks again to the Asylum/WMG family: Todd, Joie, Shari, Aura, Denise, Ayal, J.Grand, Ashaunna, and all)
