Etta James vs. Beyonce…..sad beef
Posted by Miss Info under Beef , Hmmm? , Life Beyond Rap , Old Music , Quotes , Sigh[50] Comments
aww that’s not right. She sounds like a doddering old bitter lady. But, it’s Etta James. What’s interesting is, if she “hates” Bey so much, then did she hate her before Bey portrayed her (and did a good job of it) in the movie “Cadillac Records”?

She sounds like a bitter old lady. Her comments were not lady like or classy…. but she has never had the reputation of being either, so I guess she is just being herself.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Awww this is sad… do you think Bey will track down her baby’s daddy and give him a shopping spree and post a video of it up on ThisIsBey.com?
February 5th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
ive always noticed the timidness in the interviews when Ms James was interviewed during the movie publicity
February 5th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
she might have dementia. i agree wit her though. mabey jill scott, heather headly, floetry, vivian green, chrisette michelle, eryka badu would of been a betta choice. no disrespect to jayonce but i dont see or hear her as a supreme vocalist.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
IMO if the original artist is still alive and able-bodied (or voiced in this case), it is disrespectful to not invite them to sing their own song. Although this may be a moot point as Etta James is not even the original artist…anyways…I think it was the YAK talking lol
February 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Etta has always had strange feelings of Beyonce. Etta said she “wasn’t as bourgie as she is” back before Cadillac Records was still filming.
She might have been a little happier to have been the one chosen to sing her song for the president.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Time for my two cents since thats all i got in this recession…Sound like ol Etta was slizzard on that polident!
February 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Etta was never happy about it. But now that the movie is out they have no reason to keep their hand over her mouth.
And c’mon…I watched Cadillac records too and girl cannot act.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
It would of been more classy if they did a duet at the Inaugural Ball. That song is Etta’s baby and it was a historic moment, of course jealousy would surface if she wasn’t involved.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
That’s not very nice.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Who do you balme for Etta not being invited to sing the organizers of the event or Beyonce Now if your gonna say ” If i was be I wouldnt do it unless she did part f the song” then you have to think they the organizers might say thanks for coming down and ask someone else to step in . Im didnt they ask Ms Hudson to sing ?
February 5th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Why is she mad @ Beyonce
February 5th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I think this is just a case of living through real Cadillac records, and Beyonce just playin a Role. Etta really live through that shit . It is sad but I really think she’s voicing her displeasure with this manufactured hype style music scene.
Check this out I like Jennifer Hudson. She is a really good singer, that is a statement of fact. What in they hell was that recreation, or attempt at recreating the Whitney Houston super bowl anthem moment. That is this generation. I think that is the displeasure your hearing. Beyonce is a product not an artist. She’s trying to be Diana Ross. It’s not organic to quote D-roc. I’m ashamed of this generation, and it’s lack of originality. I’ve heard story about Gladys Knight singing Aretha’s songs when she was young and Aretha threatening to kick her ass. This isn’t news, just this new Tmz era.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I’m really sorry but I didn’t know until today that Etta James was still with us…
That being said Beyonce killed that song Etta should be proud of Beyonce if she did a terrible job then yeah that gives her the right to talk ish. The Obama’s were happy with it so case closed.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
She didn’t write the song, wasn’t the first one to perform it, and wasn’t the first one to record it…whatever….i heard this mighta been a joke anyway.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Hilarious!! I can understand why Etta would be salty. The song might not be hers originally but she’s the one that made it famous. When u think of that song, u think Etta James, not Beyonce. Etta’s a living legend and Beyonce’s well Beyonce.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Is it Beyonce she’s not happy with? Or her own life?
February 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
I think Ms. James is making something out of nothing. Yes she made the song famous, but she’s not the orginal singer. Did she ask anyone for permission before she recorded that song? I highly doubt it. Besides, I heard she couldn’t even make it to the ball b/c of health reasons. Now, I could understand all this if Beyonce did a horrible job singing it, but she didn’t. Actually, she did an excellent job. So, what’s the problem here?
February 5th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Do you all see where being old and bitter goes? Nowhere. You just get older and more bitter.
Let this be a lesson to all the 30ish Hip Hop heads, Never hate on what the young niggas is doing, wether you like it or not, wether you understand it or not. That mentality stays with you forever and when you actually do receive true blessings you are too blinded by your bitterness to recognize them.
Let this be a lesson to all.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Kemi Says:
“Etta’s a living legend and Beyonce’s well…
———–
…A living legend”.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
LMAO…I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY AS HELL
FIRST OFF, ETTA JAMES WILL TELL YOU STRAIGHT SHE’S NOT CLASSY…SHE STRAIGHT UP RAW!!
SECOND, I REALLY DON’T THINK SHE CARED FOR MRS. CARTER IN THE FIRST PLACE. SHE’S BEEN TALKING SIDE-WAYS ABOUT BEYONCE SINCE FILMING OF CADILLAC RECORDS…
LAST, SHE’S A OLD DIVA…REMEMBER ARETHA FRANKLIN AND MARY J. BEEF. EVEN CHAKA HAD ALITTLE PROBLEM WITH WHITNEY WHEN SHE DID HER VERSION OF EVERY WOMEN. OLD DIVAS ARE ALWAYS BITTER OF THE YOUNG UPCOMERS TAKEN THERE SHINE…ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT!
SH*T, MARY J. BLIGE AIN’T EVEN OLD AND SHE ALREADY FIGHTIN’ ON KEYSHIA COLE…I THINK ITS IN FEMALE SINGERS NATURE…ESTROGEN!
February 5th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
OK I’ve been watching all these Beyonce stans, is that how you say it?
You guys sound ludacris to quote Mike Tyson.
Being dismissive about Etta James and calling her just another bitter old bird is really showing your lack of depth. Beyonce is the Gloria Estefan of black people. A manufactured and forced, radio heavy and over saturated wanna be Icon.
Come on folks she’s talented but she’s a future Madonna in training. Meaning she’s gonna do a ton a movies and never win an Oscar, Probably have a divorce or 2 and when she hits 50 she’ll be banging a Yankee!!
well maybe a Knick..
February 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
does this mean Beyonce is gonna buy Etta James babys father a fur coat and Gucci shoes?
February 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Etta shouldve sang the song for pres. Etta said that she wasnt consulted about the movie like that…b/c if she wouldve been she wouldnt have suggested Beyonce to play her. she said she didnt believe B looked like her and etc. so, basically she hasnt been cool with the whole Beyonce thing ever. i see her point. i don’t like the way things were handled either….it’s like they just overlooked the legend Etta herself and just rolled with it! could you imagine seeing someone else portray you and you are not consulted about it? then they go all over the world singing your signature song….never really giving you props or hommage? it’s like a slap in the face.
February 5th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
@ bobby ..LOL
Etta was having a senior moment.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
I’m tryibg to think back, was January/February always the “Beef Months”
February 5th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
I think it must be so difficult to have made bad choices in your life and then watch someone younger than you magically have it all. That said, Beyonce always tried to be respectful and reverent to Etta James. Would any of you turn down a movie role because someone didn’t want you to play them? Many of this generation thought Etta was dead and Beyonce has revived interest in Etta, her music and her story. As volatile as she seems I would not have chosen her to sing at the Ball either. Beyonce was grateful to be asked. Etta mighta cussed everybody out including the President!!
February 5th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Etta James, son stated his mother was invited to the Inauguration but, was to sick to attend. And Miss Info I couldn’t agree with you more about Etta James rude and nasty statement about bey.
February 5th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Those who don’t see how Etta James has been insulted are probably under 35. But for all of us over 35 feel the insult every time Beyonce is played. Celine and Cynde Lauper have done a better Tribute to Etta and the song. Please shut Beyonce up and take her version off the air. She ain’t got it.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Damn. I was really hoping this wasn’t true.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO @ #2
U STUPID!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
lmaoooo
smh…a mess
old and bitter
February 5th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Etta James SHOULD BE happy to have still another opportunity to be remembered in a possitive light but noooooo she had to go insulting the only black man ever elected President of the Country…..What the &^%$ makes her think she has a right to insult President obama? Like he gives a flying poop about her funky attitude and classless comments? Beyonce sang the song better than she ever did and if she wasnt so hell bent Etta might realize Beyonce was complementing her by performing it. Beyonce is an awesome individual and if I were her I would never utter a word about this in public and let Etta salt away just as she deserves.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
seriously? people saying that b is a forced product etc. sounds a bit out of the box. b has been respectful towards etta james throughout the filming. the song isn’t even originally hers and she making a bug fuss over it. its a shame that there are so many haters of b. she works very hard to be in the spot where she is. now just watch. beyonce gonna take the higher road just like she always does and keep it movin.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:47 am
I can’t cope. I love Etta, I think I’ll just pretend not to know about any of this.(sigh)
February 6th, 2009 at 12:47 am
etta james needs to go take a nap! she is a bitter old hag who is green with envy. beyonce is on fire right now and aint nobody touching her female wise in the industry. people really know how to hate. the damn song isn’t even hers it was originally some white dudes song way back in the day so etta please don’t flatter yourself and just be glad people still even mention your name. beyonce’s legacy will go way past yours believe that.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:00 am
I think everyone is focusing on the wrong thing because her issue with Beyonce is typical between entertainers from different generations. However, her disrespectful comments about Barack Obama were totally unnecessary and irresponsible.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:22 am
Beyonce is forced and manufactured, let Beyonce go accapela against anyone in the world dog real talk. Plus she got dance moves like no other.
Yes I have seen Beyonce perform live accapela and I got goose bumps. You can’t manufacture that ish real talk.
February 6th, 2009 at 3:42 am
I agree with Ms. James. Cadillac records was cool. Beyonce should leave THAT song alone for the inauguration. At Last is a classic. However, Ms. James has nothing to prove, so, she didn’t have to dis Beyonce that thoroughly. on the other hand, speaking so confidently about ones own achievements is often seen as misplaced arrogance. In this case, I believe Ms. James just knows how great a job she did and, as an artist who recognizes a job well done, hates to see someone tarnish her work.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I saw the Etta James insult interview. Beyonce is a beautiful, respectful, talent lady. And she has an amazing voice. If Etta is angry, maybe it is because Beyonce has a good life and that the former made bad choices and never became a superstar. If Mr. President had wantd Etta to sing on THE day, he would have asked her to do so.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
She did retract and release a statment saying she was “joking”. I didn’t get it… esp the part about ‘big earred Obama’… yeah real funny. She need to release all that anger cuz she don’t know how much time she’s got left here…
February 6th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
etta is a hatin ass bitch, she should be proud beyonce sung da song da way she did! wit he old dried up ass
February 6th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I coodn agree with you more! Beyonce is a goddamn ICON && Eta James, while huge part of rock & roll history, is has been. She should be grateful to bey for honoring & reviving world reknown intrest n her. She ddn always hav a prob w/ bey ddn anyone see “Fashion Rocks” las yr? Beyonce sang the song, did a long drawn ot intro & dedicated it to her! Please tht ol’ hag was n heaven!!
February 6th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
she is just a hater and should shut the hell up!!!! I can see now why Obama chose beyonce instead of her.
February 6th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
1st off if you were “71″ and had been through and seen the racial hatred in this country she had you’d be a little bitter too.To say she is that old, still performing well, and lived to see a black president is great in itself. But to not even invite her to sing and have her watch the same woman playing her in a movie do her “song” at a one time only historical event is just not the best display of an “American Dream”!
So to all you idoiots who dont respect elders
educate your self, before you speak or she might have to go and git’ dat’ switch and you’ll be the one she beats.LOL
ya think?
February 9th, 2009 at 3:13 am
Check out this Pastor dissing Beyonce. Mad Funny!!
February 12th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Etta James is right. She should have been singing At Last at the Ball instead of Beyonce. At Last is Etta’s signature song. I’m sure you know you just don’t cover another, more famous singer’s song like that. Etta James has every right to feel insulted and angry. For those of you who don’t know, Etta James was a huge star. During her prime her fame was equal to that of Aretha Franklin’s. Etta is a block in the foundation of popular music. Do think for one minute the organizers of that ball would have asked Beyonce to cover an Aretha Franklin monster hit? The ONLY time it would have been appropriate for Beyonce to sing At Last would be if Ms. James had died. Perhaps Beyonce’s “handlers” didn’t know the protocol, or they just wanted Beyonce to sing at that ball regardless of disrespecting a singer whose talent and success far exceeds her own. With all due respect to Ms. Knowles, do think really think your songs will be remember and covered by thousands of singers 50 years from now? Etta James’ work continues to stand the test of time; she is a legend. May you be half as successful.

Well here’s my spin on it:-
The two cannot be compared at all, Beyonce represents the modern times in the genre she is most recognised for!(R&B)..Etta James on the other hand is respected and known for the genre she represents.(Classic?)
Etta I so love your music and style but i cannot respect you and the type of person you are! After hearing your comments dissing the girl…i sooooo hate u with a Passion!!…ungrateful, disrespectful, and i honestly cant see any justice in your BITCHFUL comments at all!
October 20th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
she can act she played da hell outta etta james part were you blind

A sad day.
Was reading through articles of Ettea and came across this page.
So sad. that many of the people here did not give credit to THE FACT that “At Last” was Ettea’s signature song.
So sad. Ettea was not included in one of THEE MOST HISTORY MAKING MOMENTS in our country. I can’t help feeling that the Obama’s knew well in advance WHO would be asked to preform at their inaugural ball. Why couldn’t they embrace and acknowledge at least some of the racial struggles that paved the way by embracing Ettea?!! Guess he’s part of that younger crowd who forgot about her.
So sad. NO ONE will say the Obama’s are just as much at fault for not including Ettea.
Thank you Francis and all the rest of you who knew what Ettea was about.
Such a sad day..
