After touching on heartbreak in “Don’t,” Ed Sheeran tackles a sudden loss in “Afire Love.” An emotional song, the British singer reflects on the death of his late grandfather, who died after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for almost 20 years. Back in April, the 23-year-old revealed he begun writing the song just before he passed away, completing the record after his grandfather’s funeral. “Always the hero of the family – such a cool guy – he’d been suffering with Alzheimer’s for some time and I actually started writing that song two weeks before he passed away. I was thinking ‘What if?’ and then he did….”

Appearing on his new album x due June 23, fans who pre-order on iTunes will receive “Afire Love” as a free download.
