ovo-fest-2013-8

It was a celebration of music and the city of Toronto as Drake electrified his hometown crowd at the 4th annual OVO Festival on Monday night. Returning to the Molson Ampitheatre, day two went without a hitch even after Sunday’s show was cancelled last week due to a vocal tear injury by Frank Ocean. Following opening acts James Blake, and Wale, October’s Very Own in Drake delivered a two-hour show filled with many monumental moments.

The evening kicked off with “Headlines,” going right into the show’s first guest as The Weeknd reunited with Drake for their Take Care cut “Crew Love.” Following an audio clip of his 2012 Grammy victory for “Rap Album of the Year,” the night’s second guest, Big Sean, appeared for a medley of “Clique,” “Mercy,” and their collaboration “All Me.” French Montana took the show to new heights with “Ain’t Worried About Nothin” and “Pop That” before Drake slowed things down during an R&B set which included “Girls Love Beyonce” and “The Motion.”

J. Cole and Miguel (the latter co-headlining a fall tour with Drake) swooned female fans with radio hits “Power Trip” and “Adorn” before the rapper-singer went into an acoustic cover of “I Get Lonely Too.” The moment lead into an appearance from TLC, who did a medley of “Fanmail,” “Waterfalls” (with Lil’ Mama), and “Scrubs.” After taking fans back to his early hits such as “Successful,” “Best I Ever Had,” “Forever,” and “Over,” it was time for a rare reunion as Diddy and Ma$e joined together on stage for the first time in years. The duo showed their chemistry of the 90s as they ran through No. 1 hits “Victory,” “Feel So Good,” “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems,” and “All About the Benjamins.”

The final moments were indeed the biggest. Through years of speculation of issues between the two, and subliminal raps, the sold out 16,000 plus crowd screamed as Kanye West appeared on stage to the sounds of “New Slaves.” “Me & Hov would have never made Watch The Throne” if this ni**a (Drake) wasn’t putting pressure on us like that,” said Kanye before getting into “All of the Lights” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” “This one of my first mentors, one of the first people that embraced me, my role model, y’all make some noise for the god that is Kanye West,” followed Drake as the G.O.O.D. Music MC left the stage. The final guest, Lil’ Wayne, took the show home with his high energy during “HYFR,” “Love Me,” and “The Motto.” With a seamless show, and fantastic production throughout, the Toronto King ended the night with his “Versace” remix verse, “No New Friends,” and what he called the official Canadian anthem, “Started From the Bottom.”

A$AP Rocky (“F**kin’ Problems” & “Wild for the Night”), and Wale (“Bad”) were also guests during the main show. 2 Chainz, and PARTYNEXTDOOR were scheduled to appear, but didn’t make the final show.
