Dipset Talks to Miss Info About the Roc-a-Fella Days, Mariah Carey and More

This afternoon, Miss Info hosted an epic Q&A session with The Diplomats for The Red Bull Music Academy’s Five Out of Five concert series. The big four from Harlem, Killa Cam, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey closed out the week of RBMA events with an incredibly candid story-telling session about the making of their 2003 classic, Diplomatic Immunity. They shared everything from who really created the name The Diplomats, Juelz’s awkward audition, and of course, all the complicated relationships between the Roc-A-Fella family and the Dipset crew….
Mikey: Dipset fans, this 2-hours long session was f*ckin incredible. All the little side stories of how Cam’s was mad as hell when he first met Juelz…all the drama surrounding the “I Really Mean It” video…their experience at Roc-A-Fella’s Baseline Studios…and of course, the build up of tension with Jay-Z. I can’t even begin to explain how epic Cam’s Hov impersonation was!! Video can’t even give you the full scope of it. But check out this clip of the guys explaining why they ended up beefing with Jay-z during Cam’ron’s time as a Roc artist. We’ll make sure to bring you more footage of the hilarious Dipset stories. (Props to Nigel D for the footage)
MissInfo: Un-friggin-believable. Honestly, I’m dead tired because I stayed up all night checking album credits and watching Dipset youtubes in preparation for today. So I’m in no mental state to break down all the hilarious gems from today. But we will edit some clips soon. I got great feedback from all the Dipset fans who were there, and I hope that the upcoming footage provides you guys with clarity and entertainment.
(PS: I know that traditionally, the Red Bull Music Academy sessions focus more on the nuts and bolts of music production, from samples to engineering, to lyric analysis. That’s not what Dipset does. But Just Blaze, Young Guru, Heatmakerz, Opera Steve, Lenny S, Skitzo, Duke Da God are great resources for that. Meanwhile, if certain folks can’t appreciate how Cam, Jim, Juelz and Zeke re-live their creative process with anecdotes, rather than through liner notes….then you’re missing the forest for the trees. #message)
Miss Info asks Cam’ron about Mariah Carey’s trip to Harlem during the “Oh Boy” days….
and Juelz remembers a visit to Destiny’s Child’s dressing room…
After the jump..

September 30th, 2011 at 10:08 pm
Thanks for this post…cant wait see more. Mainly because of Jim Jones…..luv him
September 30th, 2011 at 10:20 pm
A Miss Info podcast interview series would be awesome
September 30th, 2011 at 10:21 pm
I would assume if this was sponsored by Red Bull Music Academy, that they were recording it so it could be available for download online. At least we can hope.
September 30th, 2011 at 10:27 pm
Miss, you did a great job keeping things into perspective. Cam obviously has selective memory.
Lol. for filing this under cronyism.
September 30th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
haha love the relationship she has with them. Gonna start callin you Min.
September 30th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
really? i know lots of ppl listen and record podcasts but I’m so worried I would just ramble endlessly about nothing and make people tear their hair out. I’m so used to cutting out all the fluff and condensing my snark into little 60 second bites, lol. maybe I need to listen to more podcasts….what ones do you love?
September 30th, 2011 at 11:09 pm
lol don’t we all have selective memory when it comes to ourselves?
September 30th, 2011 at 11:14 pm
I like Jensen Karp’s podcasts, Jesse Thorne’s Sound of Young America is dope, Nerdist, Joe Rogan, Adam Carolla, Lavender Hour. And WTF with Marc Maron. Podcasts are the best.
September 30th, 2011 at 11:43 pm
Did they mention anything current?! Any details on the new Dipset album? Or a new Cam album? Or when Juelz is gonna drop??? Don’t get me wrong I love the stories…but I’m starting to think they’re more concerned with telling us stuff about Jay and they’re time on the Roc than they are with putting out new product and making NEW memories/stories. Just curious… Diplomatic Immunity is one of the best crew albums of all time. Its still in rotation in my ipod. But I dont want them to be the old niggas at the park that always has stories to tell you about “how things used to be”… Feel me — but hey, great piece anyway Minya.
September 30th, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Agreed. A podcast would be dope.
Miss Info, a few that I check out aren’t hip hop, but they are Sound Opinions (music critique/interviews), Aisha Tyler’s Girl on Guy and Marc Harmon’s What the Fuck (both interview comedians). The others are Stephen A. Smith of ESPN and PTI both sports, because I don’t get to see/listen to live.

cam imitating jay-z is hysterical! lol To be honest I’m surprise jay- and dame even got along. Harlem and Brooklyn personalities are so different its hard to believe they got along as much as they did
“you can be in all fairness all you want I’m telling you the truth” cam is a character. He nailed there body gestures though they do act like that , act too nonchalant and cool lol
props to nigel d for this too miss info and nigel d link I like it.

I’m a big jones fan! These guys look like an old group.. Its time for Santana to be a major star…
The chemistry between them is soo real… Not sure the music will be what it once was but I personally hope they put all of their verses and tracks behind santana and ride him to superstar status…Its his time..
October 1st, 2011 at 1:01 am
Dipset is washed up!!! Juelz was the hottest nigga on Dipset, but for them to even mention lyrics for lyrics with Hov is a joke in everybody’s eyes. Fiddle di diddle raps snuck by and niggas let that rock but knock it off Dipset (Vicset). Y’all good hurdle jumpers & sprinters & Freaky Zekey is a snitch!!! He got on the stand & hollered green coat!!! Yeah clown my man got 30 & Zekey testified.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:18 am
Miss Info Im a real nigga in the streets & these dudes is frauds!!! I respect hip-hop but because a nigga got a lil rap in him don’t make him real. I’m speaking for real niggas that know what it is out here. These niggas been victims they whole career. They been shot, robbed, jacked & some more shit. Then try to fuck with the Homie from Brooklyn for some strength (they know who I’m talking about). Move on, make music & stop trying to perpetrate!!!
October 1st, 2011 at 2:16 am
lol @ real nigga in the streets…. what street Seseme Street? clown ass nigga lol matta fact u Big Bird ass nigga
October 1st, 2011 at 5:00 am
Yes, they/we record all items for future publication on the site. The team in Germany is primarily responsible for this, but it should eventually get posted in full.
October 1st, 2011 at 6:29 am
Hello Miss Info,
will the complete 2 Hour Interview be avaiable soon?
October 1st, 2011 at 7:41 am

October 1st, 2011 at 9:12 am
I don’t know, man. These niggas are kind of over. Juelz had his shot and unfortunately he didn’t capitalize on it…for whatever reason. But it’s hard to capture lightning in a bottle twice. Especially when none of them were ever really THAT good at rapping. Dip Set was more about a movement. A feeling that they gave you. They reminded me so much of the dudes I grew up around. I could relate to their shit wholeheartedly.
But their time has came and went. Not many people are really checking for them anymore. Solo or as a collective. All we really have are the memories now. 16 year old me digs this shit.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:24 am
If anybody cared about that shit on the large scheme of things Hip Hop as a whole wouldn’t exist. Cuz more than half of these niggas are “frauds”.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:35 am
LOL. Info you know for the longest your supporting listeners have been asking for more of you. Podcasts, full radio/online show, something. Truthfully most personalities ramble on when given the opportunity. But I think you can bring enough quality content to the scene that it’s worth it.
October 1st, 2011 at 10:19 am
I love the crony-ism tag. It’s transparent.
Cam’s Hov impression is priceless.
It’s great because Hov and Cam don’t seem like they would like each other… and they don’t. And what’s realer than that?
October 1st, 2011 at 10:32 am
No, for sure you should. At the end of the day its the personality&voice that matters. On even the best shows there is sometimes endless rambling about nothing- sometimes it makes for a better show because of it-
October 1st, 2011 at 11:47 am
i hope so…i know that Mike is working on more clips. But I think we’ll have more by monday.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:51 am
hmm, I have heard about some good comedy podcasts, some guy who interviews other comedians or something. But I wonder if it’s harder for non-comedians.
Sports is different, that’s like politics….debates for days.
Meanwhile, I listened to this one podcast that was posted on like GQ magazine or something, and it was so boring I wanted to cry.
October 1st, 2011 at 11:56 am
hey miss info can we get the full session on podcast
October 1st, 2011 at 12:03 pm
You sound like a Dipset nigga!!! [edit]
October 1st, 2011 at 12:15 pm
You sound like them Dipset niggas with that WACK shit!!! [edit]
October 1st, 2011 at 1:22 pm
I think Cam does himself a disservice by not moving on. He needs to stop dwelling on this. He needs to learn how not to comment on everything. He has had too many hit records and it is somewhat of a B-class icon in the game. He is one of the survivors from the 90’s, a link to the pass, still considerably relevant this days. Still making quality music.
He needs to embrace his brief time at the ROC, where he made his best material… He should just move on.
Maybe if he starts acting like a larger figure, perhaps we would start looking him in that way.
He has all the tools to be a very influential figure…. I was just in Argentina and I heard dudes saying “no homo” and attributed to CAM. That’s quite the fucking reach.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:25 pm
i dont think he’s dwelling….the topic of the discussion was Diplomatic Immunity and the experiences around that time.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:29 pm
I loved it also. It’s crazy funny. It makes me think that this dudes only got into the rock because of Dame. Furthermore, Cam was given that position because of his relationship with Dame. I love the irony behind it. Just my thoughts.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:48 pm
You proley right man… Smh. Wasted talent. They too busy worrying about Jay and letting us know that Dame was they’re man. We get it. Lot. Its been bout 10 yrs. Funny how they’re quick to talk about Jay and Dame situation when Cam and Jim fell victim to a similar type falling out. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Smh, and lets not even talk about Cam having Juelz in rap jail – dude owned like 75% of Juelz publishing.. Lol.
I wonder how many interviews Jay does about the Dipset era on the Roc? —- Yeah. Exactly.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:50 pm
once again music is entertainment. you gain accolades by the plaques you have not by your rap sheet. *sarcasm* lol
October 1st, 2011 at 6:04 pm
I like the interview….But Cam lost me when he said that he thought Jay-Z was woried about someone being on his label with just as much talent as him:/ C’mon son!!! It’s nice to believe in yourself…but nobody but Dipset believes that you’re anywhere near Jay in ANYTHING!
Real Rap!
October 1st, 2011 at 7:28 pm
This is classic right here. Can’t wait to see/hear more. Even though the Dipset arrival to Rocafella seemingly was the beginning to the end of the dynasty it definitely was the peak in my opinion.
And anybody who listened to Welcome To New York City for the first time kind of got the vibe that it was a dogfight more than a collab. That’s one of my favorite tracks off any album period.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:39 pm
Word to all of that. Especially their fminternal beef. Which is worse in my opinion cuz Dame and Jay were business partners who developed a friendship which later dissolved. Jim and Cam were damn near brothers and they let the game fuck over their relationship and consequently any chance they have of ever being relevant again.
Nice for nostalgia purposes. But fucking sad when Jay is worth half a billion and I seriously doubt either of them is netting a mil’. Like Eddie Caine from The Five Heartbeat sad. They could have had it all. They started so many trends in the early to mid 2000s and didn’t capitalize on any of it.
If anything this is a cautionary tale. When keeping it real goes wrong.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:33 pm
I agree a miss info podcast would be awesome .
October 1st, 2011 at 9:57 pm
i got a huge crush on you miss info.. i’d listen to you ramble on a podcast for hours and hours…please make the podcast happen!
October 1st, 2011 at 11:09 pm
The only time you went plat is when you were with the Roc, Miss info i know you are dipset 1# fan but when they always have to talk about Jay and the Roc….is that only time they made music…no one is looking for them…they are finished! And Cam, Santana and Jim are not even better than Beans or Kanye so why would Jay look at them as competitors….never……ever….they need to stay off them pills and cough medicine!
October 2nd, 2011 at 12:30 am
MissInfo, you always came off as a Dipset Number 1 fan to me… Just my humble.. So this whole line of questioning seemed bias.
It’s kinda corny to bring up the negative aspect of that time period for a forum that was supposed to be more about the business, not personal bs.
The question should be why did they break up. Why haven’t any of them gone plat since? Whens their next albums coming out.
To take the time to get on stage and bash a man who’s CLEARLY a success in the industry is corny.
I hate hearing he stole the Izzo beat. Kanye produced it. You really think it went to them first?
October 2nd, 2011 at 4:04 am
miss info – please give us more of this – been laughing for like 15 mins – good shit!
October 2nd, 2011 at 8:59 am
Great interview and great vibe!
October 2nd, 2011 at 10:47 am
nah like thing about some rappers that own labels even if the dudes he sign isent as good as him its this thing about them that they feel like their gonna get out shine.i respect dr dre cause he raps but he signs dudes that are better than him.besides that i dont even kno who. as much as eminem can spit name one dude that he sign that can out rap him.see what im saying.like jay z is dope, nas is dope ,eminem is dope they can can rap their asses off,but name one dude they sign that can out rap them, thats one of the reasons you dont see much good rappers like thel just sign the rappers that are ok, rappers shouldent own labels but as of 2011 they do.i kno u gotta make hit songs too but its like u kno,i think fat joe trys too tho he sign big pun and remy ma at one point .their just as nyce as fat joe or better.its like the real fly girl dont wanna bring a girl out with them thats just as fly sometimes i think its called acting like a bich lol
October 2nd, 2011 at 2:30 pm
Haha i remember a specific interview where Juelz (under a Jay Z Def Jam presidency) didnt want NO PARTS! Didnt want to comment on shit! Lol…real comfortable laughing at a Jay Z verse now huh? Lol! Cannot believe Juelz & Cam laughing about wack verses? I could name several of their joints! Funny how Jim came out to be better than them both, with that aggressive flow (see SO COLD)! I like the Dips but I agree with a few other people who have mentioned, they kinda hang on to the good old days more than most! Real kiddie like with it to! Smh. I think 3 dudes havin’ Jay Z’s name in their mouth on stage in that way is a bad look! Last wk’s posts said it all! Make all the Jay impersonations you want but last wk the same day this site posted Jigga on GOOD DAY talkin about bring a team to his borough…that same day Cam was in a supermarket or some shit with some busted bitch seeing what she could clench with her asscheeks! WHO WON???
October 2nd, 2011 at 5:06 pm
how you figure they signed to interscope and working with dre
October 3rd, 2011 at 5:22 am
Do us a favor and shut up. Nobody cares about whether or not you are from the streets. FOH
October 3rd, 2011 at 5:28 am
You have to had listened to Cam’s complete discography, from the beginning to understand why he actually does have as much talent. His solo career from the early 90’s stands alone in itself.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:35 pm
I’m a Jay Z fan but still enjoyed this. The oral history of the Roc-a-fella days is so filled with various rumors and stories. I’m sure somewhere in the middle of Jay/Dame/Beanie/Cam etc there is the truth. Would be great if someone wrote a book that goes into all of this.
October 22nd, 2011 at 11:36 pm
Too much Echo. Can hardly hear this ish.
