To celebrate Tupac’s birthday (June 16), TIME released a clip of photographer Danny Clinch recalling what it was like taking Tupac’s now iconic Rolling Stone photo back in 1993. The session took place just 3 years before the rappers untimely death on September 13, 1996. It’s hard to believe 20 years has past… man.

“It was Rolling Stone magazine and I was thinking to myself, ‘Oh man, if this guy ever blew up, I would have this great photograph. What if this record is so well received that it could end up on the cover.”
