While all eyes have been on the city’s latest crop of XXL Freshmen, one Chicago rapper I’ve really been impressed with lately is Alex Wiley. It’s hard to pigeonhole the 21-year-old rapper in his hometown’s diverse scene, but if you take the best elements of each of the Chi’s rising stars and put them in a blender, that’s what you’re getting with Alex. He’s got the off-kilter, melodic sensibilities of a Chance The Rapper, an ear for a hook to rival Lil Durk and the ability to rap his ass off like Vic Mensa. A seriously dangerous package.
It’s yet to be seen whether Alex can reach the heights of any of his aforementioned peers, but if success was defined purely by the quality of the music, then his new mixtape, Village Party, puts him in very good stead.
