Hardcore 30 Rock fans (the missinfo.tv family included), this Thursday the all-LIVE-everything episode is back!
The last time Tina Fey and Co. said “f**k it, we’ll do it live,” was back in 2010, and that episode is still a classic. Remember how Fey brought in Seinfeld’s Julia Louis Dreyfus to play a hotter Liz Lemon for her flashback sequences? This time around, Tracy Morgan‘s character Tracy Jordan will be played by our new buddy Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino!
But this is a role, Glover was born to play…especially since he’s got plenty of practice as a Tracy Jordan stand in during his days as a 30 Rock writer and executive story editor before he joined the cast of Community.

During part 2 of our exclusive chat with Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino out at the Heineken Coachella Music Fest (#HNKCoachella), Glover reveals how his Tracy Morgan/Jordan impersonation started out of necessity, and which incarnation of Tracy he’ll be channeling this Thursday! (see above)

Here’s a snippet of 30 Rock‘s 2007 “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” featuring Tracy Morgan and Donald Glover on vocals.

According to 30 Rock reps, this week’s live plotline will be:

“When their Kabletown bosses announce they will no longer pay for ‘TGS’ to be a live show, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) realize their lives will actually be easier if they shoot canned episodes fast and cheap. Only Kenneth the Page (Jack McBrayer) objects, urging that nothing can replace the communal experience of live television. He tries to convince the ‘TGS’ staff to fight for their right to be live by taking them and our audience through a magical look back at the illustrious history of Studio 6H.”

I’m also looking forward to the spoof commercials they cook up (see below), and the subtle differences between the East Coast and West Coast performances. It’s a huge risk for an ensemble cast to hang it all out there, lol. But the creativity of this show always comes through.
