21 Questions With J. Cole About Living in New York
Posted by Mikey Fresh under Interviews[26] Comments

I can definitely connect with J. Cole on some of these answers. Having moved to NYC myself in 2004, it’s been some years now since I’ve spent my time getting lost around the Big Apple. It really does take a certain kind of breed of person to make it here. Though, Cole is a North Carolina native, he spent years attending New York’s St. Johns University and calls the big city home today. While talking to NYMag for their 21 Questions series, Jermaine explains why he considers himself a true New Yorker.
What makes someone a New Yorker?
So many things. First, you can claim birthright: you can be born here and never raised here. Then there’s attitude. You coulda been gone from New York for twenty years, but you still carry that attitude with you. But I look at it as knowledge of the city. I feel like I’m a New Yorker because I really know the city. I actually tell the drivers where to go — I have this bad habit, I always question the drivers. I do that all the time because I feel like I know the best way, when really it’s like, “Yo, man, shut up. This dude does this every day of his life.”
J. Cole talks about what hates most about living in NYC, Donald Trump, and more after the jump…
What was your first job in New York?
A basketball-coaching job in Queens, coaching kids from ages 9 to 13 in Kew Gardens. They struck me as the type of kids whose parents had money. They were terrible, but I enjoyed it. Even though they sucked, the kids were still fun and cool.
What do you hate most about living in New York?
I hate that I love it so much, but it’s so expensive. I hate the fact that I know that for what I spend for my place, I could live like a king anywhere else in the world. But I love it so much that I settle.Who is your mortal enemy?
I’m about to start a beef right now. Nah, my enemy is definitely TIME. There is not enough of it. I wish I had more because there are just so many things I want to do.
Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
The new one’s definitely cleaner and safer, and more inviting. I only saw the old one like two times in my life, when I was 14 or 15. I remember seeing peep shows. I couldn’t really appreciate it then, so I gotta go with the new one.

I honestly think he’s a clown, to tell you the truth. Clearly a smart guy who made a lot of money, but his public image is clownish. I can’t take him seriously.

WTF!! He’s not even a New Yorker! He wasn’t born here nor did he grow up here! GTFOH!! Fake ass nucca!

You’re not a New Yorker unless you’ve contemplated suicide or homicide at least 5 times
March 21st, 2013 at 2:32 pm
Half the people who live in New York weren’t born there. Your whole city is basically transplants. Get Over it.
March 21st, 2013 at 3:11 pm
How is he even old enough to remember the old Times Square?
March 21st, 2013 at 3:33 pm
And your point is? I don’t give two shits if half or even a third of the city weren’t born here. I was and in return I’ll dictate what a New Yorker is. You on the other hand are one of those other half that move here and try super hard to fit in and forget about their true roots. Hence why people like Jay Cole are answering questions about what a New Yorker is when he came here for college. Get the fuck out of here and go rep North CArolina.

gotta fight with those cabbies, I’ve fought with so many on getting over the GW (i am part of the bridge and tunnel crowd i guess you can say, but i was born and raised 2 min outside the city in jersey so its my city too) they want to charge 60 for a quick ride when i got in for like 35

You probably never been outside of your borough, get over yourself!
March 21st, 2013 at 6:07 pm
haha i’ve been to Europe, South America, Asia and Australia BUT I’m just proud and rep my city hard. Its people like you who migrate, move or whatever you want to call it that just rep this city like its yours. This is exactly why whenever I mean anyone who moved here I’m one if not the only native New Yorker they know. Way too many people faking the funk. I have no issues with moving here and being happy to be leaving your shit hole city, but too many people change their identity entirely to “fit in here”. Posers, Fuck outta here!
March 21st, 2013 at 6:14 pm
Exactly my point. Anyone who’s from here knows that the old Times Square began changing when Giuliani became mayor in the early nineties and began cracking down that area. When J Cole came here in 99′ Times Square had already drastically changed. Once again he’s faking the funk.

Ha NO your from New Jersey, be proud! This is not “your city too.” Your a Jersey kid and you always will be. Your passport says Born in NJ not NY.
March 21st, 2013 at 9:58 pm
It is my city, and I am proud of being from jersey, one of the proudest. I can walk to manhattan from where I’m at, so how r u gonna tell me it’s not my city to rep also.
March 21st, 2013 at 10:11 pm
Duuuuuude! Call Bloomberg up and ask for a badge of some sorts. Bravo for being a native New Yorker and all the other good shit you want. Heck, how about a billboard while i’m at it?
Again, it is not THAT serious. If anything you should be honored that others move/ visit here and is reppin where you’re from .. no harm no fucking foul.
And for the record, if you don’t recognize the flag, it’s a Jamaican flag. I rep my lil island everywhere I go; ain’t shit change but my area code.

jheeeze u americans get real emotional about your city – be happy he loves your s*)t
but homes where the heart is and maybe his hearts in NY
March 22nd, 2013 at 8:22 am
Dude….STFU!
March 22nd, 2013 at 11:12 am
Thanks! A Billboard would be nice!! lol
There’s no other city i can think of in America where you just move to and forget about your upbringings and your birthplace and begin to just act like your from there. I have no issues with people moving here and being happy about it. Its just that I consistently see people come here to run away from their history and embrace this place like its who they have always been. Be happy and rep where your from and stop calling yourself a New Yorker when your not.
March 22nd, 2013 at 11:14 am
Ha because its not. Your not from here. Your from Jersey. Thats great that you can walk here and do whatever you want, but that doesn’t mean your a New Yorker. Shit if I was from Jersey I would do the same shit as you and act like I’m from NY. BUT deep inside we both know your a Jersey kid. Sorry
March 22nd, 2013 at 12:59 pm
Thanks Eric.
Anyone arguing this is self-conscious and it shows. If you were born and grew up here, you’re a New Yorker. If you weren’t, you’re not. People need to just accept this and move the fuck on. Fucking space invaders I swear.
March 22nd, 2013 at 4:17 pm
Haha space invaders! Sheep!
March 22nd, 2013 at 4:18 pm
Tear, no.
March 23rd, 2013 at 1:22 am
I do not live in New York nor intend to, but if your place of residence is in New York, then you are a New Yorker by definition
March 23rd, 2013 at 3:44 pm

I was born and raised in brooklyn . Im fuck*ng tires of people moving here and believing they have some grounds tl claim here . You were born some where else you were not born in newyork . I hate people who also lie and say there from newyork . That shit is the worst . If your from north carolina say i rep nc but i live in ny and enjoy . Be proud of who you are .

Carolina dudes run New York. Ask Frank Lucas, Greensboro ask Bumpy Johnson descendents, SC or ask Nicky Barnes SC. All them rappers in NY and it took a NC dude to get signed by Hov. That city is only good for making money. Most of the people talking shit are Broke! Leaving like rats and come down south and can’t change a tire on a car. It is a great city with a bunch workers. Y’all boss is my man. Fuck out of here. New York is America’s dumbass. He can rep that shit if he wants. He is American. New Yorkers always think their shit is the best. Not!
