What’s Beef: M.I.A. on Lady Gaga “She sounds more like me than I f–king do!”
Posted by Miss Info under beef , for fashion-hounds and obsessive consumers , good for me , laugh with , life beyond rap , quotes , videos[76] Comments

(In a cage fight, this is kind of an even match-up, no? Sri Lankan vs NewYorker. Both seem scrappy.)
Over at the Vulture blog, Amos Barshad makes the reasonable point that “Lady Gaga’s visuals and general public persona greatly, greatly trumps the fairly uninteresting music she makes.” Now personally, I love that “fairly uninteresting” music because I love schlock-pop tunes that I can jog to at the gym and fist-pump to in my car. But I get that Gaga’s edge is visual while her music is mass. Honestly, if her music matched her look more…I probably wouldn’t listen to it as much. It’d sound like Yoko Ono crap.
But I love a good celeb death-match (when there’s no chance that it’ll end up with someone getting shanked outside a club)…and in NME (via Vulture via ONTD), M.I.A. takes aim at Gaga’s neck!
(NME: Do we still need record labels?)
M.I.A: Are they even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!**
(NME: Do you think those programmes [X-Factor] and the Internet have destroyed the mythology around popstars?)
M.I.A.: I don’t know. Again, there’s Lady Gaga — people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same! None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I fucking do! …
More of M.I.A’s Lady Gaga criticism after the jump….
M.I.A. continues: That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important – saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.
NME: How important are image and visuals to your music?
M.I.A.: Very. But it’s not like “Haus of Gaga” (laughs). Me blindfolded with naked men feeding me apples and shit.
**Lol, I think this is the video that M.I.A. is referring to: Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce “Telephone”….with the various product placement. How much did that Honeybun placement cost? ; ) Not sure which video features the apple-feeding ; ) Is it “Bad Romance” or “Poker Face“?

Im gonna have to agree with MIA and what 50cent said! They let CERTAIN artist do whatever they want! Why can Beyonce & gaga have such a sexual video aired, but if a rapper does it its blurred out, or condemed? Why can britney spears say its britney “b*tch”, but if a rapper says it, it gets blanked out?
Why in Beyonces video for EGO, when she used to say “im that b*tch” mtv jams and vh1 sould NEVER edited it. There is certainly a double standard, and the media picks and choses the artist they chose to uplift, and the ones they want to rip down.
Now matter what BeYAWNce does, it will ablways be right, and if you criticise her, people call you a hater. These two women can do no wrong, and its time the media be called out for their fake biased BULLCRAP! Im glad MIA wasnt afriad to speak the truth.
This song, and BOTH collaborations between Lady GAG- ME and BeYUCKI have been less than mediacore and just nothing but sexualness! And this is “epic”, why? because its them two? Were supposed to give them an “A” for effort even though the end product is much less than stellar? This is B.S and they both need to go away.
They are such icons, but they collaborate about a video phone? da hell? This is wack, and this industry is all about who has money and kisses butt! Im glad MIA spoke about this fake bs. Im glad 50cent spoke too.

I just gotta say first, Yoko has some serious jams. “Walking on Thin Ice” is an ill track, but I hear you on some of it being way too ‘out there’ to get into.
Lady Gaga is super talented but if I had to choose I would go with my girl M.I.A. Rebel music all day.. I would’ve never thought to compare them though

I always thought it was M.I.A on that wale track chillin. I refused to believe it was Gaga till I saw the video. When I first heard her paparazzi I thought it was Gwen Stefani and we all know her dress code was heavily influenced by roisin murphy because she looked like a plain jane before she met her.

Thank you MIA. I love you again even though you’re cheating on me.
I don’t think she’s bitter as much as she’s unimpressed, maybe a little disgusted and somewhat annoyed.
MIA makes music and Gaga makes videos and appearances. She’s basically a hack – it’s just hard for people to come out and say that about someone at the height of their popularity.
Also, ultimately, it seems like MIA is speaking more about the current state of the “music” industry and just using Gaga as an example.

I can see the issue because Lady Gaga is not an artist like MIA. She’s a packaged product. Somebody put her in some crazy outfits and now they use her as a (well paid) vessel to market Coke and cell phones. That’s what the industry has become (remember when Mariah had ads in her cd booklet?)
However, MIA should have honestly left Gaga alone because, as seen by the comments, people will just see her as a bitter artist or hater jealous of Gaga’s success.

I think they’re both widely overrated. I can only listen to M.I.A. out of the two and in small doses at that. M.I.A. has a valid point in calling GaGa out, but M.I.A. isn’t exactly the most honest, straight up artist either. They both play up visuals and that’s what makes them popular.

My only issue w/ Lady GaGa is that her “weirdness” seems so unauthentic (i.e the whole birdnest face thing, seriously???)…..pretty much piggybacking on what MIA said…so I agree…

Fuck it….she said what she feels & you don’t get alot of that these days. Personally, I couldn’t name 3 songs from either, but, truthfully, there would have never been a good time for her to say this in the eyes of the public b/c they’re all “gaga” over this chick right now. If MIA would have waited until Gaga fell off then every comment would’ve been “Yo, why didn’t she say all that when Gaga was hot?” If you agree, you agree, if you don’t you don’t….but why does it have to be hate?
Peace

Lady Gaga is a trained musician and writes her own lyrics, she is famous because she was driven and lucky.
Manufactured stars are usually attractive while Lady Gaga isn’t the norm regarding looks in the pop world.
At the end of the day Gaga isn’t going nowhere she understands the manipulation of the pop culture at a Madonna level.

While I agree that MIA’s music was more ‘experimental’, it was still pop trash for the most part. I remember when MIA debuted, and I thought she was the wackest thing I’d seen yet. Terrible, jumbled production and grating vocals.
At least Gaga has “Just Dance”, which is a catchy record and still hits to this day. MIA does have “Paper Planes”, one of the most gangsta beats of the last millenium, but the beat made her, not the other way around. On the other hand, Gaga sounded at home on her “Just Dance” record.
and I’ve always hated “Poker Face.” Thought that song was wack from the get-go.
either way, MIA and Lady Gaga are in the same vicinity. they sell to the same pop mass-produced crowd, so why complain?

MIA sounds extra jealous. Lady Gaga can sing, she can dance, and she has millions of fans. MIA can’t sing can’t dance and has fallen off the face of the earth , so now she attacks the hottest artist out. MIA is a hater. By the way Gaga actually sings MIA chants and hops around like an idiot and she sings like the ole mike jones rapped. She repeats the same lines at least 3 to 4 times a song and it’s not the chorus. Every question was asked in a general sense and she goes towards Gaga with every answer.

I vote Gaga, who’s actually from New York and doing her thing. MIA is a garden variety hater, can’t appreciate another woman’s success because she never really popped outside the hipster cirquit. Hey, she did her little thing but real talk: “paper planes” is as big as it will ever be commercially. Now, I did think she got swagger jacked a little by Gaga on the wack Wale record, but whatever, she obviously phoned that one in. And by the way, Gaga is an actual musician, instead of just making bird calls over weird techno.

GaGa has a bigger stage presence… MIA looks like one of those gurls that work in dunkin donuts. Not that it’s something wrong with working at DD’s….

Well Gaga is backed by Interscope Record, the home of BEP, Eminem, Dr.Dre, 50 Cent, etc. So I would think that Gaga would have bigger stage. Gaga has basically worked every gimmick a female artist can. Bi-Sexuality / Lesbianism, check. Weird over the top outfits, check. Over-sexualized image, check. Label backing based on image more than music, check. Matter of fact, these are all the things that people say is WRONG with the industry. Just some thoughts.

INTERSCOPE HAS A STABLE OF ARTIST THAT ARE FAILURES…. JUST LOOK AT 50 CENT…. Interscope was gonna drop her anyways it was until Akon decided to take her under his wing. And once she started to blow interscope put their money behind her.. The truth GAGA is a better performer. Thnxs to the new generation of fans that accept the way music is produced now a days… Her music is POP/COMMERCIAL it’s suppose to be over the top. I bet akon has no problem with her doing what she does nor does Intercope the company that was gonna drop her, they are getting boatload of cash of this PRODUCTION….
And if you should feel anything about the way music is made for the masses then the only real criticism should be on RAP. Cause this is where the true problem is at.

Is this really about having a problem with particular artists or is it the system that selects who is “untouchable”.
I dont hold a thing against an artist like Bey cuz the woman works and earned her spot. If the industry machine supports her then it is what it is. Gaga does seem way more manufactured but again thats the industry.
The fans/people that support these artists fuel the machine that does all these things we get online and complain about. So in the end you need a change in the audience if you really expect the playing field to ever be leveled out.

It’s the FAN’S who choose who they wanna listen to. Not no record Company. You see nowadays the fans show the record companies who they are more interested in, not the other way around. This new GEN voice their opinions thru internet blogs… Who ever believes that the reason these artist all blowing up cause of their records companies “nowadays” is unaware of what is really going on….
TEN PLUS YEARS AGO IT WAS ABOUT TALENT NOW ITS ABOUT HOW MUCH BUZZ YOU HAVE.. How many YOUTUBE HITS etc…
example you can be a talented artist but have no followers or BUZZ. Now you can be a ok artist with one big song But because everybody is digging ur sound you have a better chance of getting a record deal before the talented artist with tons of songs to present to the masses…

Yes buzz trumps talent but the level of buzz along with certain other business factors play just as big a role. That the reason a Drake gets more “support” then lets say a Papoose or a Wale.
It’s also a matter marketability.

But drake is with YM. THE HOTTEST RAP RECORD COMPANY as of this time… He is always with LIL wayne every concert performing etc… Plus dude comes from a tv show that was for teenagers so he already had a following. Papoose is not signed to no big record company like “cash money” I bet if he was He be more on the radar than he is now…And like I SAID BEFORE PAPOOSE IS ONE HECK OF A LYRICIST BUT HIS BUZZ IS NO LONGER THERE SO GUNIT RECORDS, BAD BOY, ROCNATION ETC WILL NOT INVEST IN HIM. Wale is rocnation etc. But as you see even though he is in rocnation people are not checking for him.
Drake is being talked about like dude already has 2 platinum albums on his belt…Not talking mixtapes. when his first major album release drops and does not meet expectations you really believe the record company is gonna spend more monies on him??? He is gonna have to go back to the drawing table….
Papoose can out rap DRAKE AND WALE…. bUT HE NO LONGER HAS THE BUZZ HE HAD 3-4 YRS AGO…. And it’s because no one outside the trisate area is not checking for him….
But I respect your opinion and at least you didn’t start e-fighting on here…

People keep saying she was manufactured. Lady Gaga has talent. She can dance, she can sing, and she’s also not scared to take a risk. Lady Gaga can get rid of the uniforms and sex appeal and just make music and she would sell. The problem is that labels want more than talent. You need to be makretable and the market says be sexy, be daring, and be on the edge.
