Mikey: Good Lookin’ to Nico and Mathieu from Gasface for sending over this lil’ clip of Info speaking about how it felt to give Nas’s “Illmatic” the infamous 5 mic rating in The Source Magazine. Also Eskay posted up a scan of the acutal album review here.

Props, “Shortie”. That was crazy for me at the time as a 14-yr. old subscriber- first of all just getting the new one in the mail slot was like an event every month. Then, to read what I recall was a good damn issue, then hit the record report and see the FIVE. I must’ve read that review over and over just waitin’ to hear the album for myself. And 15 years later, it still stands- you were right!

ok finally checked it out and love it your the best info you make a dude wanna drop out of med school and pursue music journalism for real LOL but of corse with as much in student loans I’ve invested in NYU med that’s not happening but your very inspiring info I wish music and the music industry in general was still like that. I wish I could open up a tape with hand written track listing and experience a life changing event but unfortunately there are no tapes no hand written listings and most unfortunately no life changing music anymore the days of illmatic have long left us and I hate to sound like one of those dudes who hasn’t evolved with the times and does nothing but talk about how great Illmatic or reasonable doubt or, Low end theory, ready to die was and I could go on forever but fuck it those times were great and I love hearing little back stories about the greatest decade of Hip-hop keep up the good work Info

I still remember that review getting me amped to go out and cop Illmatic. I was going to anyway but that review made me anticipate it that much more.
It’s sad to see the strong foundation built by all those good writers turned to its current garbage state. Peace to Bonz Malone, Reginald Dennis, etc. Anyway very cool. Never knew that was you who wrote that.
