(from vh1’s hip hop honors gallery)
Went to the Hip Hop Honors last night (the actual show airs on Monday, there’s talk here on the comments about liveblogging it like we did the BET awards?)….and almost got gaffled by Hammerstein Ballroom security because I had the wrong color pass, lol. As soon as I got in I saw my old friend Riggs and the twit-homie ?uestlove sneaking away to watch the debates and Dallas Penn shooting videos so that was a good sign of things to come. All the performances were very nice, loved Slick Rick’s cat and pink eye patch, De La Soul’s tribute by Mos Def, Q-tip, and more, Short Dogg was in the house but not all of the house showed the proper amount of love (then again, maybe the timing wasnt so great), Naughty by Nature ended the night on a high despite the fact that my homie Juelz lupe-ed it a bit, lol….
Thank you so much to Kim and Luis from VH1 for holding my hand thru that security strip search, lol. Also, thank you to Ed Lover, Posdnous and his friend for being so chivalrous, for real, also Clayton at Opera. Lovely seeing Ghostface, Treach, FWMJ and Khadijah, Scoob Lover, Dove, Kendra G, Skyzoo, Torae, Dan, Hills, Mari, Mazzi, and more.
The homie FWMJ sacrificed his iphone battery to take some cute pics from the show, and said this on his RappersIKnow blog…
“Afterwards hung out with Khadijah & Miss Info at Q-Tip’s Renaissance [official VH1] afterparty in midtown. After it got shut down at 1 am and Mos Def got on the mic for a quick rant about how essentially corporate structures only value Hip Hop when it profits themselves (Miss Info will talk about it tomorrow I’m sure), Khadijah and I hung out with Michael Rapaport, his friendly film buddy & camera person Brenda (hi!), and a gang of other folks as Michael is directing a documentary on A Tribe Called Quest (interviewing other members of the Native Tongues collective). Anyone remember Afrika Baby Bam’s Native Tongues diss a year or so ago? Yeah. Right. That subject came up off camera, as Baby Bam showed up at the show wearing eye make up like Brandon Lee in The Crow…”
lol. That documentary sounds amazing!
I’ll post what I caught of Mos’ rant later… but in the meantime, photos from the show and afterparty, plus Dallas’ bootleggery….after the jump

(wow@ busta’s slick rick long short pant suit)

(I think Cee-Lo’s teeth and Lil’ Scrappy’s teeth should have a play date)

(Too Short, The Ruler, B-Real)

(wow@ Busta’s wallys….wonder what Ghost’s reaction was)

(more shoe game….only Big Boi can pull off this neon ronald macdonald sock/shoe combo)

(Treach and I at the afterparty)

(Ed Lover hosting, Q-tip deejaying, Mos Def and Too Short and Mistah Fab in the back, choreographer Fatima and MC Lyte in the front)

(Big Boi and his beautiful wife Sherlita…more pantaloons!)

(LOL @ FWMJ’s reaction to Eve’s entrance on stage….”Who’s that Asian girl?”)

(I told Pos about how back in the day, I brought an advanced copy of “De La Soul is Dead” back to Chicago for my boy Rashid Lonnie Lynn aka Common, lol, and it totally blew our minds…sniffle…the good ol’ days)
Here are Dallas Penn’s backstage bootlegs: part 1
and 2: People forget how good Naughty by Nature was/are….there’s a reason Eminem idolizes Treach.

@ trauma:
De La Soul is not really dead. You were talking in past tense when referencing them as if The Grind Date wasn’t a few years ago.

@ info
You’re originally from Chicago ?
I could have sworn you held flushing down! And i’m not trying to be ethnically insensitive — I’m Flushing born, Jackson Heights raised and i’m not asian in the oriental sense..
DE LA SOUL IS DEAD!

I’m hoping this show will be tight.
I coulda done without the Shortdawg tribute though. He only had 1 REAL album that moved cats nationwide (Life is…). And NO I’m not some hater. I’m from the Bay! Just my opinion.
I still can’t believe it’s been so long since all these crews 1st came out! That’s why I’m always repping 1991 for being as good a year Hip Hop has EVER had! Naughty, Cypress, ‘De La Is Dead’ (OMG- Afro Connection is still my shit!).. plus every other classic that came out that year!
Overall I gotta ‘Big Up’ VH1 cuz they support Real Hip Hop more than BET does at this point! (And that is really sad BTW!)

@ ALICIA, WHY YOU TRYING TO HATE ON THAT GIRL? I KNOW SHERLITA PERSONALLY AND NO, SHE DID NOT HAVE ANY WORK DONE. JUST A VERY PRETTY GIRL NATURALLY.
