Too Soon? South Park’s season premiere includes Michael Jackson, DJ AM and more…but not many laughs

On Weds, South Park kicked off their 13th season with a episode definitely engineered to create controversy…less so for social commentary, which they do pretty well, but more so because they “went there” by including this year’s many celebrity passings, drawing in Billy Mays, David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett, Bea Arthur, Walter Cronkite, Natasha Richardson, Michael Jackson, DJ AM and more.
Honestly, it’s one thing to include all these celeb cameos…but another thing to just waste them. The plot here is too lame to balance out the “shock value.”

Kinda knew this was coming… I found it funny, cause I get the humor… Matt and Trey push lines every year… this is no different than the Scientology episode, or when Cartman tried to restart the nazi movement… its anarchistic humor and should taken as that, not as an attack on these celebrities… they were a plot device

yeah it def wasnt an attack…but usually they do better with a hidden agenda behind the shock value…like the previous MJ episode, and even the Kanye Fishsticks one.

I sorta enjoyed it…Thought that AM and MJ would have laughed at it!!
We’ve all cried or was shocked by the loss of at least one of those people now its time to reverse that and get a laugh or 2…
R.I.P to them all..
Personally I’d love to talk about how Jay-Z is at fucking Yankee games with Kate Hudson while Eminem is honoring LL Cool J for hip hop honors.. Sean too busy being famous to show any fucking respect to anyone else!! You dont miss a fucking chance to honor LL or Def Jam at Hip Hop honors!! How many more passes will that fraud get!!

I thought it was not only funny but conceptually brilliant. A lot of celebrities have died in the past year and it was only natural that the producers of south park would make that the general theme of their season opener.
They used plot of sixth sense “I see dead people” and still found a ways to make fun of Bill Mays(RIP) with respect to ridiculous products in the market that make no sense but have crazy ads and the Scifi show ghost hunters where the team try to convince you that they are experiencing paranormal effects but end up looking stupid in the dark.
I didnt see the show live, I am watching it on the internet but so far I think it is brilliant although some might find it a bit offensive making fun of the dead (touchy subject).

Thank you! I was watching this last night and the only time I laughed was at Michael Jackson’s first appearance. I think this episode had so much potential, but I was just like- I waited all these months…for this? It was just very corny I felt like I was watching someone else attempt to make a South Park episode.

what dissappointed me is that i was waiting the whole time for the payoff connection between peoples reactions to the celebrities’ deaths and the chipotle bleeding asshole theme.. the way kyle kept saying in disbelief “why would u keep eating it if it made your asshole bleed??” had south-park-pay-off-set-up written all over it, but then they just let that fall. it started with lots of promise but didnt finish off strong. so michael jackson wanted to be a little white girl, so what? u’ve done that already

I loved the episode. I kinda felt warm inside seeing all those celebrities seated together, feeling almost as though none of them were alone in their deaths this year.
*shrug*

Kinda f***ed up but funny as hell! From the Ghost Hunters *wait- what’s that noise???* (I admit I watched that stupid show b4),the little lady from Polterguiest movie & when MJ called the other little girl in the pagent “a little doo doo head” I almost vomited!

I would have to say 70 percent of South Park’s appeal is there commitment to ignore and mock just about every PC social norm with the quickness. I think sending the plane to hell was a bit much, but how else could that kind of show end? The male judges at the pageant where hilarious. The Poltergeist was on point. The amazing thing is for a 25 minute show SP crams in so many jokes/insults.
