Jessie Ware

There are so many cool indie female singers these days…if only I had sad-girl idols like Sia, Florence Welch, Yukimi (Little Dragon), Lykke Li,  Lana Del Rey and FKA Twigs to mope around with during my angsty hormonal Are-You-There-God-It’s-Me-Margaret teen years….but I was stuck raging against the man with NWA and Kool G. Rap. Kids these days have everything handed to them, lol.

But while not as depressing as a Lana or as outer-spacey as Flo, Jessie Ware‘s pop still has a little dark to balance the sweet, and after 2 years off the grid, her new song “Tough Love” is one of my favorite of the summer of 2014. Her past hits like “Running” and “Imagine It Was Us” were too British blue-eyed house music for me, but it’s very promising that this time around, Jessie is working with producers like Benzel***.

Another of my favorite Jessie Ware appearances was on the 2011 SBTRKT song “The Right Thing To Do.”

While Sia and her new album 1000 Forms of Fear has more alternative hipster cred, Jessie has had her share of hype from the hip-hop and R&B side. Last year, she joined Miguel on a duet version of “Adorn,” and she snagged A$AP Rocky for a remix of her song, “Wildest Moments.”

***Funny side note: BenZel is a production duo made up of Benny Blanco (who wrote and produced everything from Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls” to Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger”) and British producer Two-Inch-Punch (aka Ben Ash, who has done great stuff with Mikky Ekko). But originally, the duo kept their identity a secret, posing as a pair of Japanese teenagers with nothing more than a SoundCloud page. Music label execs and even Pitchfork (who listed them as a “New York-via-Osaka duo”) fell for the stunt, some even attempting to court the “kids” in the comments section. Brilliant. But the jig is up…everyone knows their pedigree now.***
