The Soul Controller…..Grand Puba at Santos!

As I mentioned in the previous post, it was another classic hip hop moment at Santos basement club in Chinatown. Lots of good folks came out to celebrate manager Corey Smyth’s birthday….but the highlight of the night for me was when Grand Puba came out and ran through some of his hits….and he sounded pristine! (the speakers were kind of loud so it may not be as clear on the video)Please enjoy : ) I know I did. Reel to Reel (1992) is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Good Lookin out on this one Info! Everybody remembers Brand Nubian but only real heads know just how INCREDIBLE Reel To Reel was! I just busted it out a few weeks ago (ON CASSETTE mind you!) & it was doper than ever. Puba is a Legend! And just recognize who really helped Mary J get that hood respect… It wasn’t no Puffy. It was Grand Puba!

thx info! the good ‘ol days. when i see clips like that, it makes me go back and say “when did i first see brand nubian”? oh yeah…greek freak at syracuse univ. with main source…wow alomost 20 yrs ago!!!
my all time top ten includes “slow down”. im glad a movement of bringing back classic hip hop performers is going on. it makes this 36 yr old relive her “crazy heineken/(40oz pina colada bodega special) party days” lol

Grand Pu (sounds unsanitary, sorry) kills it on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School album. I think the track is “Once Again.”

that’s what’s up! I had owned cd’s but Reel to Reel was the first I copped for self, (hoping to get my 360 sticker…but I didn’t f-u Elektra) it was a slow burn, but listening over the years it’s still a fav. That 2000 was the shit too. I was listening while cleaning the other day. He was ahead of his time and his shit didn’t kick in til like a year or two after it dropped, but Maxwell is that dude. one
