It’s no secret that the first season of True Detective was influenced by Robert W. Chambers’ classic 1895 book, The King in Yellow (the main antagonist being known as The Yellow King, for instance), but how many fans knew that the series reflects actual Satanic rituals and child abuse carried out by a local church that haunted the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana a decade ago? In this stirring documentary, VICE travelled down to Ponchatoula to meet with Stuart Murphy and Tom Tedder (the real-life Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, if you will), who look back on their truly disturbing case that inspired one of TV’s most acclaimed series.
