Beyonce Knowles turned out New York’s Roseland Ballroom for the first of her four-night residency. She murdered it. Singing, dancing, emoting, thanking, lifecoaching, storytelling, juking, jazz-handing, orbit gum smiling, and of course, lots of feminine wiling and hip-notizing.

But the best example of Beyonce’s venus voodoo power came during her performance of “1+1.” Kneeling on the hood of a white piano, sweat glistening, in her gold-sequined teddy and shiny Ice Capades pantyhose….King Bey belted out the ballad while quad-pumping to the beat.

Holy When-Harry-Met-Sally Rapture.

I mean really….the venue was majority sistren and stylish gay men but maybe even some of them had involuntarily emissions after that final back arch.

More on Beyonce’s Roseland Ballroom opener, and a photo of Angie Martinez, Kay Foxx, and me at the show…
After the jump…

Besides the tent-pole “1+1″ performance, Beyonce most impressed me with her sheer triathlon stage endurance. Every song was a combination of perfect vocal runs and fancy footwork. And she made it looks so effortless, even her facial expressions were doing their own sideshow.

It was lots of fun going to the show with Angie, Kay Foxx (from Hot97’s Ciph and Rosenberg Morning Show), and our boss. Kay would sub in as a Beyonce back-up dancer at the drop of a dime, btw ; ) Don’t think we didn’t notice that during her speeches, Beyonce dropped a few little sublims about dad, Matthew Knowles. At one point, she gave mentioned him being right “for once” when he submitted “Independent Woman” for a Charlies Angels soundtrack without permission. At other points, she alludes to being in charge, and self-managed.
Overall, I’m glad that my first Bey concert was in a smaller setting like this, as opposed to the Vegas-sized extravaganzas that I see on TV during Thanksgiving dinner.

Beyonce performs “Countdown” to a crowd that already knows every word. Columbia’s Mike Navarra tweeted that some fans had started lining up the night before, and stood outside through all of Saturday night and Sunday’s torrential rain to get prime spots at the front.
