Thanks for the Memories: Vibe Magazine folds
Posted by Miss Info under about miss info , crony-ism , life beyond rap , not good for hip hop , photos , quotes , relationships and family , sigh....[50] Comments
yours truly on my 225cc putt-putt on the Vibe contributors page back in the day : (
The reason for the closing: CEO Steve Aarons says: “the company tried in vain to either find new investors or “to restructure the huge debt on our small company.”
New York Times reports: “Vibe’s closure leaves just one large-circulation magazine, The Source, focusing on hip-hop and R&B. The Source has had its own troubles, going through a bankruptcy and emerging under new ownership last year. A rock-focused magazine, Blender, folded last year.”
Umm…has NYT ever heard of a magazine called XXL?
RapRadar: Vibe’s final cover, The Dream and Christina Millian (naked)
There will be a staff meeting at 2pm. They were reportedly unaware of the decision until this morning.
UPDATE: Editor-in-chief (and my former EIC) Danyel Smith says…
On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It’s a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine’s sixteenth anniversary, it’s a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you.
Danyel Smith
the former Chief Content Officer VIBE Media Group
& Editor in Chief, VIBE

UPDATE 2: Quincy Jones weighs in and announces plans to buy back Vibe?….“They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m'a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”
The letter from the CEO of the parent company ….after the jump.
Dear VIBE Team:
It is with a heavy heart that I share some tough news, VMG is closing down effective today, June 30th.
It’s been an 16 incredible years since VIBE’s inception. There are very few magazines with the richness of history and breadth of talented visionaries who created the powerful lens in which VIBE viewed and shaped urban music and culture.
Ever since I first set foot in this courageous company, I’ve regarded myself as incredibly fortunate to be be involved with this remarkable brand and group of individuals whose performance has never been nothing short of outstanding. We finished 2008 in an improved position versus the prior year, and accomplished so much, including:
* Editorial Awards
* Editorial transformation into content dept
* New Ad accounts being broken
* The Most Mag Launch
* Award winning re-design
* Profitable digital operation
* VIBE.com growth and improvements and programs such as Best Rapper Ever, #1 Stan, etc
* Mobile VIBE launch
* Micro-site development Mostmag.com to start off.
* V Sessions
* Improved PR coverage
Unfortunately, over the last several months, a confluence of events has obviously posed VMG to exceedingly serious challenges.
* The collapse of the capital markets has impacted us greatly. Over the past several months, we have actively pursued investment resources while working intensively with our bank to find a solution. But the deal market right now remains very poor and at the end of the day, the lack of investment resources to restructure the huge debt on our small company has made this outcome become a reality.
* The print advertising collapse hit VIBE hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business. It’s also unfortunate that in a recession many companies reduce the multi-cultural campaigns. These facts, coupled with the continuing decline of the music industry not to mention the newsstand wholesaler consolidation in early 2009 all negatively impacted our business in a significant way.
* The relentless economic situation has depressed our growth initiatives on the digital front. To be clear, VMG has made significant improvement in this part of our business, but not at the accelerated pace required to offset the devastating effects of the most severe recession in our lifetime and the accompanying print losses.
I want to thank you all for your hard work and commitment, and for all of the adventures along the way. I’ll miss this place a lot, but I’ll miss you all and the magic you create.
Vibe will be remembered as a shockingly brilliant content company that everyone can be proud of and I look forward with great excitement to all of future endeavors you all pursue.
With great affection and respect –
Steve Aaron
former CEO of VIBE Media Group

thanks info. i saw the news on another website and emailed you cause you would probably know i mean after working for them, then i hit the twitter and lol questlove was tweeting about his vibe article that will now become null and void. this is all bad. the economy, wallstreet, the american government, the banking sectors in all the world’s cities, people, etc… can suck my ass. it’s not even like i liked vibe. it’s just that there’s so much shit going on because of this recession and it just i guess seperates the men from the boys but not in any kind of cohesive way. there are really good publishing companies, writers, hard working labour people, everyday people getting burned, meanwhile all those people making money are still making money and can still afford to own multiple houses while the rest of us struggle for every dime and nickle we get. obviously nyt have never picked up a copy of xxl ever. this sucks.

You’re welcome! Sad to see Vibe go.. I must have more than 50 copies of the magazine tucked away in storage.. Back in the days before the internet that’s how I kept up on the hip-hop and R&B scene. Being from Canada that’s basically all we had aside from Rap City and Soul in the City on Much Music.
To be honest ..the mag fell off a while ago.. I haven’t bought an issue in a while.

look at what this lady said. i don’t know who she is, so if i should respect her or not is not an issue, look to what i just wrote, and i guess i should respect her being a woman or whatever but she’s not all that wrong. i just think her comment is really really really really not worthwhile and a total waste of brain space. i don’t have twitter so i can’t get at her, but someone needs to because she has one mighty big stick stuck up her ass.

I’m sure these writers and editors at Vibe will find plenty of work if they’d like to be used by white editors to bash Black women in print.

Say what you want about the VIBES but no other publication in the space makes sense with out it. No direspect to XXL, SOURCE, OZONE and whatever else is out there but Quincy Jones’ VIBE was like Quincy Jones’ Mike Jackson and that mag opened the door for all the aformentioned titles. Glad I was fortunate enough to put 5 years during the good and the not so good.

LOL. Y’all some funny cats.
I still have the test / premiere issue of VIBE from 91 or 92 + the first 10 issues.
I was a VIBE loyalist up until Danyel Smith left many yeas ago. (yea, I know she came back recently, but it was already too late for VIBE. The damage been done)
IMHO as a former regular Vibe reader, Danyel helped make VIBE and Urban Culture pop off in the publishing industry.
Period.
VIBE had a legitimate and celebrated run!
Thank you Quincy, and thank you Danyel!

Damn it’s a shame, but to be honest, I don’t buy magazines no more, I mean it’s because of websites such as MissInfo.tv, Thisis50, OnSmash, WorldStar, twitter e.t.c that make these magazines useless. You get information in real time.
The last time i picked up a magazine I already knew 80% of the content because I stay updated.
Times have changed, and it’s still a recession. I salute Vibe though, for real.

from some one strictly on real hip hop and the underground scene, vibe has no say in hiphop/rap or in anything beside mainstream heads that really dont know anything and that want another carter cd from weezy. dont think anyone really gives a shit. HONESTLY i thought it was shut down a while ago. Magazines are to slow for info anyways you hear most of the newest tracks from the internet and the nets whats gonna make/brake you now.

hmm….well honestly it depends. do you want to get into real photography editing…then maybe a fashion book? or one of the many artsy books, like ID? If you’re interested in more mass pop culture photography, celeb stuff, try for one of the weeklies…like InTouch or US or Instyle?

not sure exactly which area in photography i want to get into but i was hoping to get a feel for a couple of different areas at vibe. idk ive decided that photography is something i love but its hard b/c at the same time i dont want to be a starving artist especially after investing in columbia…

well pa let me explain to you the hilarity,
Its hilarious given the context. I made a joke about how her being in that picture (making no reference to the type of bike it was) was reinforcing racial stereotypes, the stereotype being that Asians love little motorbikes.
Her response was funny because instead of just telling me off for perpetuating stereotypes in the name of an internet joke, she got all tight and specific about what KIND of little motorbike she was on and how her bike is WAY different from the little motorbikes most asians like. Need it spelled out more? Then I fee sorry for your mother…
Just trust me, its funny and don’t worry missinf and i know each other well, although she doesn’t know that yet… she will laugh when she finds out who this is…TRUSSMEE! (Columbia Reps Hardbody all day! THE IVORY TOWER OF HIP HOP POWER)

Does the death of a longstanding publication along with the struggles of the remaining pubs (I think Source is bi-monthly now) speak more to the decline of the economy and the print industry, or more to the decline of the genre?
I’m thinking there’s a little of both in there.
