Subversive Genius Moment: Nas makes sure America feels very very…very uncomfortable
Posted by Miss Info under for fashion-hounds and obsessive consumers[41] Comments
props to Commish for these images of Nas and Kelis on the red carpet of the Grammys……
That is marketing genius…..because what can Lisa Rinna and Joey Fatone do? Absolutely nothing…..I wonder if the suits at the TV Guide Network were freaking out….(“Move, Joey! Damnit, for the love of God, move somewhere else! I don’t care if you have to broadcast from the parking lot, just get the fuck out of that area! Oh shit, Nas is moving again…..we can’t get him out of our shot!”)

I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but that shit was embarrassing. I used to think Nas was mildly intelligent, this nigger gimmick he’s using on his new album is going to backfire and not going to have the impact hes expecting it to have.

hmmm, sounds like you guys dont think he did something subversive and rebel, you feel like he clowned himself. I think alot of depends on the quality of the album itself. Like if he falls victim to overhyped racial anger cliches, then youre def right, he took a big step backward. But if the album lives up to the protests and says something new about the underlying racial strife that exists in this country, then it’ll be an important, and worth the shock shirts

I had a feeling Nas would do something like this, especially on a national platform like the Grammys…
Frankly, I’m indifferent, only because there’s obviously more to it than the initial shock value. I think the underlying issue is the objectification of the slur and the tension surrounding it.
Of course, I’m not expecting Nas to simply use the title purely for shock value as other musicians would, since his track record lately has spoken for itself.
The fact that there isn’t much of an open discussion about the slur, and the fact that any sort of discussion about it is always emotionally-driven, is what makes it so much more polarizing.
Nas seems as if he wants to open discussions about race relations again, rather than bury it all under the rug. It seems as if the only two options lately have been to either ignore the use of the word entirely, or to embrace it casually. There’s been no open debate on such a large scale because it’s almost taboo to discuss such issues publicly, and the P.C. thing to do has been to abolish any and all use of the word.
But at the end of the day, is it just a word, or is it more than that? And Nas seems to be using that as a gateway to other topics that scare people to death.

People stop being so mother fucking ignorant it’s 2008 he should be able to name his album whatever he wants. He’s obviously trying to make a social-political point and some of yall dumb “NIGGERS” are just to stupid to understand that it’s about much more then those 6 letters on his t-shirt.

Subversive is my middle name! That type of shit is right up my alley!
Me, personally…I think it’s Subversive-Lite. To me, shocking is the norm (sad to say). N-bombs are nothing new.
Like you said, it’s the quality of his album and its ability to spark constructive dialogue and offer new perspectives…if not, then it’ll all in vain and he’ll be seen as just someone craving attention.

i still think nas should’ve titled his album “The N-word”…that way it could be interpreted as a reference to the actual word and his name

its foul how nas uses a racist word and trys to market off of it. nas should just make good music insted of talking about things that he thinks he knows.the word nigger is no where near worse than muslims coming here and blowing us up.and listening to nas songs he gives props too muslims .when white kids wear that shirt dont get mad. i used to like nas music. but i think he smokes too much weed and is caught up in things that will hurt him in the end. insted of wearing a shirt that says nigger on it wont he go too the schools and teach kids things that he thinks he knows.its a shame a good rapper like nas will go to waste doing dumb things like this.im all for the up riseing of all people not just one colar. their are poor white people in this world like any other colar not just blacks arte poor. plus if you ask me jewish people had it worse than blacks, hitler killed millions of jews on the spot. they dident even get a chance to be a slave (not that being a slave is a good thing} and till this day i see other whites make fun of jews for no reason. im not jewish but im just saying. you know those people you in on that pics are laughing at nas. their not skard too se that word on his shirt.you think blacks get called nigger alot??? wait till nas comes out with his album, his album will give every colar the rite too cal blacks nigger. way ta go nas.damn when dudes fuc your girl it really changes a niga huh????

I dunno what to think about that shit really I’m still kinda shocked lol. I’ve been against that album title from the beginning though and I don’t think he or anyone else could make an album good enough to hold that title.

Don’t think the peeps commenting so far understand what he’s doing..
@crook.. BIG difference between what nas is doing with the word to what kkk did with the word if u cant see that then i feel sorry for you
@smackyomamma(?).. “non hit making” – get outta here!!
If I Ruled The World – (ft. Lauryn Hill)
Hate Me Now – (ft. Puff Daddy)
Made You Look
Bridging The Gap – (ft. Olu Dara)
NY State Of Mind
hip hop is dead
or does an artist have to have a multi platinum selling ring tone to get your approval as a ‘Hit maker’ ? who says he’s needs be a hit maker anyways.. there is sooo much more to music than ‘Hits’!! this is hip-hop not hit-hop
you also said “unloyal un business savy fagit”
well not every rapper needs to be some super focused business savvy Donald Trump wannabe in my eyes either.. I’m actually tired of every rapper out there trying to act like they are business men.. there’s nothing wrong in being an artist and concentrating on your art from.. and leaving men in suits to deal with all that other stuff. I often wonder how much better certain rappers music or lyrics would be if they stopped trying to be something they aint.
I’m looking forward to hearing his album before casting any judgment. hopefully he shuts everyone the fuck up. including Bill O’Reily.

he’s a idiot, he was never a good rapper to me, he shoulda been a millionair just like jayz, but instead he choses to come out with a new album ever 4 or 5 years, thats when hes done spending all of his money, hes doing it for the money, not cause he cares about black people, or trying to make a difference. so stop it, just like the hip hop is dead shit, hip hop was the same way when he was on top, i didnt see him come out with hip hop is dead. so f him.

I’m gonna say it once and thats it: Nas is not smart enough to pull off this gimmick. Did any one actually listen to him when he tried to explain it? The bill that blacks voting goes up in 23 years is a myth and he’s just making himself look very foolish- on CNN talking about obscure nonsense. Don’t let his lyricism twist your mind, nas is not a smart man. Every interview I ever heard him do he hasn’t sounded well spoken once. Pac, Chuck D hell even cube in his prime could pull this off because those guys are/were smart Nas is not. He’s clowning himself and going to cheddar bob himself with this shit EARLY.

Lets not make this more complicated than what it is people, its a disgrace. I dont care how you try to put it or how he is trying to portray it. Wearing a shirt that says Nigger on it is one of the most ridiculous things that i’ve ever seen and I dont care how he tries to portray it on a album or in any interview. The word has to much behind it for any person to try and shift the meaning/image/thought behind it. You cant shift the meaning behind a slur people…thats why its called a damn SLUR!! Here we have a black man who just won a grammy for album of the year (for a jazz album at that, which is a big deal!) on stage and we’ve got this jackass sitting in the audience with a shirt on that says nigger. And some of you have the nerve to see something positive about it?? What the hell is wrong with you??
We’ve gotten way out of hand now. Here is the bottom line, with Nas wearing that shirt he is making a public statement that no black people from this point forward should be offended when any race or creed of people call us that word. He’s taken its “power” away. Whether you like it or not, that is what he is saying! And we all know that is not true! When the 15 year old at Sonic calls you a nigger, dont be offeneded, just say “yeah, thats whats up!”, or ” you already know!”. He is making a fool of himself, and the rest of us whether you like it or not! There is a reason why a Italian wont name his album Guinea or Wop, why a Irish wont name his Mic, a Polish guy wont call his Polock and so on. We are the only people who dont understand that for some reason…and its so, so, sad. This is a slap in the face to ALL of those who’ve made the world a better place for blacks to live in.

Wake up, waaaaaaaaaaake up, who are we my black people, even my Latino people who are we, listen to your heart ask yourself where are we going in life, we degrade are selfs, how you ask? look at our young future and tell me how not, listen how we talk everyday to people and if you have such a clean mouth how many people a day you meet that have a foul one to others or to you, I am from the hood I know what goes on, I see us kill our selves and say nigga to each other sending us to a slow racist death with out a gun nor knife and say its just a word and feel its ok. The person that changed the word nigger, No thats wrong, not a word a degrading name Nigger and made it Nigga, Bill Cosby even said he was shamed that our black people use that word, Now Nas said it, who are you people to comment on Nas what do you people do for your community, we all as a black people did not start that name Nigga, it was a white man and we help him everyday by using it since our freedom we beat our women and children cause of him, we straighting our hair cuz of him, we sit on the block everyday and kill each other cause of him cause its past on down to our kids and our kids kids, damb you a black mother F_cker why your nose so wide and and flat, why your lips so big, its not just about a Album its about a movement it was a time when hip-hop was a movement even if it was talking bout a gang or how much they worked on the block to feed they kids, Ghostface song( all I got), Public enemy, (Fight the Power) Mos Def and Talieb Kwalib, Common, NWA, Tupac, Krs one, but now we have this new school Talking about Jewelery, money, cars, how many females they degrade, wake up people its not hating anymore if it is stop hating Nas

top five reasons NAS should name his album the N word
5. Jim Jones, Lil Wayne and, baby were not bloods as liltle kids but became bloods as grown men with record deals. (we think this is cool)
4. superhead a african american women wrote a book about all the men she had sex with. (this we also think is cool)
3. jeezy’s snow man tee and the fact he tells us every song he get it for 17 5 (17,500) (9 time out of 10 he prob sold dope in the projects where black people live we love this)
2. because we can spend a hundred plus dollars on a authentic ed hardy or bape tee’s but download our favorite african american rappers album for free (thats the best…we show our onm people much support)
1. number one reason NAS should name his album the N word is because he is the author of such songs, “I KNOW I CAN” “BLACK GIRL LOST” “WE WILL SURVIVE” “IF I RULED THE WORLD”
If not NAS there is nobody better to speak on the topic…remember how cool cam’ron looked on tv telling the kids if a mass murder lives next to you dont tell police instead just move…

Kelis said “John Lennon had a song called WOMEN ARE THE NIGGERS OF THE WORLDS.” I dont see anyone here saying well istn’t that f-up that a white artist can came up with something like that, no one here critics that, what kind of double standards are we f-ing dealing with here. Maybe, just maybe he has a message and that message will again bring the attention to our community because we are still poor living in the ghetto and they(as the rest of the world) think that we are all OK when we’re not. I still see crackhead in my block, I still see people dying for no good reason. Haven’t you guys notice that the greatest way not to bring attention to something is to not talk about it. Remember the Vietnam when they showed all those Americans dying, losing arms and legs, it was ugly and thats why people protested because they saw reality. Turn the TV on now you think the government would let the media show those scene that happen aswell in Iraq, hell no they know the young would again take the street like crazy. 50 Cent recently spoke about how he had to change the title of his song “I Still Kill” to “I Still Will” because that would be the only way to get airplay, but how it was ok for a band to call itself The Killers and have no problem(maybe it just had to do with a simple reason, they are WHITE).
My professor talked to us about Martin Luther King Jr. last week. He told us Mr.King was a very smart man, you want to know why, because he had realize something, if you show the world a country’s ugly side their is bound to be change. Mr.King showed the rest of the world how the United States beat their citizen with billy clubs uncouncious for no good reason and yet the United States claimed it had freedom, the United State were humiliated and ended signing the agreement.
My point is, don’t disagree with something you have no idea what route is going yet. Give him a chance to show us that he really is going to talk about the change we do need in our communities because if you live in a place like New York(and I’m not talking about the pretty places), we do need something that brings the light on us so we get the attention and help we as the youth need.
Because if its not with WORDS then what other alternative do we have to bring change, oh wait….why not… lets do it the same way the United Sates forefathers did it…lets start a REVOLUTIONS…but like the great 2Pac said, “…stop being cowards and lets have a revolution, but we dont want to do that, dudes just want to live a characters, they want to be cartoons. But if they really wanted to do something , they were that tuff alright lets start our own country, lets start a revolution and lets get out of here and do something.”
THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO READ MY THOUGHTS. THANK YOU MISS INFO FOR THIS WEBSITE, I CHECK ON IT EVERYDAY SINCE I AM HIP HOP.
LETS BE SMART AND DO WHAT Bomani “D’Mite” Armah SAID,” READ A BOOK, READ A BOOK, A MUTHAF-ING BOOK.” THAT WAY WE STOP BELIEVING WHAT WE HEAR ON TV AND HAVE OUR OWN THOUGHTS ON THING THAT AFFECT OUR LIFES.

Jesus Christ, I cant believe that such a simple matter is becoming so “deep”. It’ll all be simple again when this album comes out and the use of the word in public, by others, triples among young people, especially white. Lets see how much “power” has been taken out of the word then. We just continue to make fools out of ourselves at such a alarmning rate…

I’m not surprised to see so many people so shocked and apalled at what Nas did. It’s 2008 and people still shutter at the word “nigger”. Only a “nigger” will still fear that word when it’s seen or heard so up close. You guys have been hearing “nigga” all these years and you’ve never stood up before and come out the way you are now. So now you see “nigger” and you get scared? Where do you think “nigga” derived from? You God Damn HYPOCRITES. Although I’m not a fan of Nas like I used to be, I applaud his showing. What better stage for a musician to make a statement, than the grammys? The grammys are the establishment. They serve no purpose to the oppressed. It’s all about glitz and glamour. Well folks in my neck uv da woods, it ain’t all glitz and glamour. So it’s simple. How much longer will you cower when you see or hear the word “nigger”? When will you begin to take back what you gave up? No one takes anything from you that you didn’t give them. The physical bondage of slavery has been over for quite some time now, so why are you still acting like slaves when you hear “nigger”? Would it have been appropriate if his shirt had said “nigga”? Would you have applauded then? It’s time to brake the bondage of mental slavery. It’s time to see things as they really are, to see what’s really happening in your neighborhood, your city, your state. Truth be told, there are some “niggers” out there, that is undeniable. I guess it is true that ignorant is bliss.
