Scarface says: “How can a gang of white boys tell a n—a what’s hot?”
Posted by Miss Info under not good for hip hop , quotes , sigh....[72] Comments
sigh….
I will try to not let this make me love “Do it like a G.O.,” “We Can’t Be Stopped,” or the overall genius of ‘Face any less.
Scarface spoke to YoRaps about what he thinks is wrong with the rap industry…here’s an excerpt:
“Anything that radio plays is wack. All the great records don’t get played. I feel like radio and big record companies are trying to destroy Black music with the shit that they play,” he continued.
When asked how he feels about artists like Soulja Boy, Face told Yo! Raps, “I think Soulja Boy had a brilliant idea, what he did with it was great. He took what he had and made money from it.”
Soulja Boy and other rappers who are selling millions of ringtones are discrediting the Rap game, according to the Southern MC. “I think it’s bullshit, it discredits the whole Hip-Hop movement when you resort to ringtone rapping. It’s not respecting the game, it’s disrespecting it. I think the internet, Black radio and big record companies are hurting Black music.”
The problem in this music industry are obviously “white boys” who are in control, according to Scarface. “How can a gang of white boys tell a n*gga what’s hot? Quote that, I said that, I said it!”
“I think the f*cking roles need to be reversed. N*ggas should be sitting behind the desk, them muthaf*ckas should be running around. Giving certain artists the spotlight, their moving inside our position, it’s bullshit!”
(thanks to Kai for ruining my morning with this…ugh)

Everything thing he said is the truth, Miss Info I noticed you labeled this not good for hip-hop, why is that? actually if the industry listen to somebody like scarface maybe there wouldn’t be as much horrible music on the radio and the same wack videos on tv.

How is this new though…..People in the streets(sorry to divert from the internet streets for a second) have been saying this for a while. We all know that HipHop(The Business) has been multicultural forever so I think the “whiteboys” he’s referring to are the investors and top tier label owners who see profit over art. Again this is nothing new. It may be new to those who aren’t in the streets and communities like that but this is old. I remember having a convo with Chuck D and Kool Keith about 7 years ago about the same topic.

Shm……..Radio, TV, and Bloggers are only intrested in giving people what they want to hear. If some some dude playing a flute for 4mins was popular that’s all you would see on BET. I love artists like Talib Kweli and Mos Def but the truth is those dudes don’t sell and it anit because the lable and the TV execs arn’t behind them. That “gang of white boys” my be in charge but the reason they are in charge is because they know what draws people in love it or hate it T-Pain and Soulja Boy bring listeners and viewers. In other words don’t be mad at the radio and tv stations that play it there just making money be mad at the people who like it.
With that said I have much respect for Face but he sounding like a fucking dummy right now.

I wouldn’t call it a white vs blacC thing.BUT its definitely a business vs. art thing. I mean c’mon you can even hear it in the voices and comments of MANY on air personalities, djs, etc…they know they personally don’t like the “music” they have to play.It isn’t a coincidence that Flex has his 90’s at 9pm now that Power105 has something similar.Outside of the artist that have always delivered for us like Common,Jay-Z,Nas or Ghostface.Who from this new school of music really moves you? Game?Jeezy?Lil Wayne?
I can only hope and pray that something forces the machine of mainstream music to return to a focus on actual musical/lyric ability and content. And not solely ringtone downloads and soundscan.
P.S Don’t let this ruin ya morning Miss Info.My 9-5 job just cut all pay increases for the next year.lol.Talk about ruining the morning.

If the majority of decision makers in the rap industry regarding what’s hot or not in Hip Hop(supposedly) are white THERE IS A PROBLEM.
I agree with Face.
OF COURSE good rap music is not only about race BUT again if there aren’t any black exec (with real power) or close to none to impact on the direction hip hop (One of the biggest genre of Black Music) will take there is a problem.
I don’t know the situation of the industry regarding that matter in the States but I just hope it’s not what Face says

sounds pretty correct to me. Its been happening since the very beginning of recorded music.
Chuck berry, Little Richard. like 99.5% of the jazz greats. They all got jerked out of their fair slice of the pie.
and it goes on till this day. How many black A&R’s, VP’s are telling Justin Timberlake (who I actually like) which direction he should go in musically?
I don’t think Face is being racist. I think he’s sying that artist are putting TOO MUCH stock in what these 55+ year old white dudes have to say about the direction of Hip Hop/black music.
I mean even if the execs weren’t white how the hell can a 55 year old tell a 15 year old what they wanna hear. It’s distorted. Just cause its on the radio or MTV (bleeech) doesn’t mean ppl like it. It means they’re forced to watch/listen to it until it “grows” on them.
And inf don’t block this mssg. LOL, im just playin u can do whateva u want. I think ppl 4get sometimes that this is a BLOG.

I can only imagine if public enemy came out today or ice cube or x-clan. they would all get the dead prez treatment.
a major problem with modern hip-hop is that in it’s need to appeal to the majority it lost it’s identity.
what scarface said was right – it’s just that “white boys” is a lazy way to define out-of-touch record execs that shouldn’t have anything to do with hip-hop in the first place. I think that should include people like JD who I don’t think has ever done anything worth listening to and should have never made it past kriss kross.
it’s almost a commentary about the failure of hip-hop that what scarface said is provoking moral outrage when had he made it rhyme and put it on a record nobody would even hear it.

The truth hurts. As someone who has spent the last 20yrs involved in the music industry. What Face said is true. I would like to add that your black executives are just as guilty or even more so than the white executives because they are aligned culturally with the music. The sad fact is people of color are still treated secondary to the executive decision making in the industry as a whole.

Like a lot of people, I’ve got much respect for Scarface and the role he played in bringing hip hop from the south to the forefront. With that said, he’s sounding real bitter and out of touch with that statement. When an artist is at the height of their popularity and making crazy money, they have no problem taking the credit. On the flip side, when their struggling to stay relevant they wanna point fingers at everyone else rather than taking the responsibility. Jay-z has been in the game just about as long as ‘Face and he’s just as relevant and continues to make money. One of the top album sellers of the year was Lil’ Wayne. Kanye just went number one, beating out the long-awaited Guns N’ Roses album, and his the album is still in the top 10 on Billboards. So with all that, ‘Face still thinks hip hop is heading in the wrong direction? People are always going on and on about rappers like Talib Kweli and Mos Def, and how they don’t get the recognition someone like Soulja Boy gets. Now I luv both of those rappers but the fact is, when their albums come out, where are all these so-called die hard fans?? Why aren’t they rushing out and buying the albums, showing their support? Regardless of whether you Soulja Boy’s music is good or not, his success is based on good ol’ fashion marketing. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling an album, a movie, a car, or clothes…if you don’t do the right marketing and promotions, you’re gonna have a hard time making money. The problem w/ a lot well-respected artists is that because they are so insistent on not wavering from their artistic vision, they don’t see the big picture. They don’t wanna understand that at the end of the day, the record companies, in order for them stay in business, they have to make money. It’s just that simple. Obviously, it’s important to put out quality material. But telling someone, “hey, my album is really good. Go buy it.” is not enough to convince people to run out and spend their money. If you think about it, you couldn’t go into an interview w/ that sorta mentality. No matter how good you think you are, no matter how experience you might have, if you wanna stay in the game, you need to stay ambitious and understand how the business works. Besides, I can’t help but laugh at someone as successful as ‘Face sounding so bitter. Why is so concerned w/ “ringtone rappers”? Are ringtones getting people shot in the streets? Are ringtones taking jobs away from people? There are way too many haters in this world. Rather than hatin on “ringtone rappers” and putting more unnecessary negativity in hip hop, why can’t ‘Face try to connect w/ some of these artists? At the end of the day, ‘Face and other bitter rappers need to ask themselves if they are part of the solution or part of the problem?

I think people that are writing Face off as bitter about the position he is coming from as someone who was here when hip hop was still taboo.
There was an analogy I heard once about this topic.
Older artists took blood, sweat and tears to build this house of hip hop and now their watching their younger kids and grand kids(newer artists) run all up in what the built with little respect or honor for what it took to make it.
Wouldn’t you be upset too?

Why…why do it? its sad to see we still don’t live in a post race world, even after a black President there still has to be someone mentioning race when blaming someone for something…
White people blaming Arabic people
Black people blaming White people
Indian people blaming Pakistani people etc
Its just so pointless to mention race when passing some form of blame nowadays, most of our excuses for doing so are pre-dated, unproven or just plain bullshit…
As for Face, bruv, your supposed to be a grown man, your what? in your late 30’s an your gonna talk that dumb ‘oh its not my fault about my sales’ shit…come on, even little Soulja Boy is more clued up than you “If Lil Wayne sells more than me i’m supposed to blame him? nah, its MY FAULT”

Look anybody can listen to hip-hop but white people destroy and play out every facet of music. Sorry but Yellow,Brown, and Black are the only cultures who have faced the pain that hip-hop embraces. That’s just what it is and face is right 100% White people constantly want to be apart of a subculture that isn’t their own. Asher Roth sucks Eminem is the exception he is dope. White people enjoy hip-hop but don’t try to understand the messages. BTW on stuff white people like Mos Def and Talib Qweli are at the top of the list. It’s funny I remember back in the day when white people listened to Da Lynch Mob and would sing “buck the devil” with a smile. The difference now with trust fund white kids wanting to look dowtrotten is hilarious hipsters die btw fuck charles hamilton as well. I know he’s not white , but I had to through that in there.

whoa this convo elevated somewhere else since I first commented this morning. I just want everyone to step away from the “race” issue for a minute. Scarface is touching on something deeper. He isn’t dissing Rick Rubin and folks like that who got down with the struggle. He is dissing the status quo whoin corporate meetings determine what agenda gets pushed. They don’t know anything about HipHop nor do they listen to it. The only rap they know is what the spreadsheet says. They have destroyed A@R departments and have trimmed down the fat at every label. It isn’t their job to support the culture, just to leach off of it. HipHops best days were when you had to actually be in the culture to “get an undergound tape” or follow an underground station or have someone who knew someone on the streets or was there themselves to let you know what was up and what this was. The culture elevated beyond that and the art(which originated in the streets not the board rooms) has been marginalized.

Scarface makes a point but I dont like his wording.
Race has nothing to do with it, knowledge and respect of Hip Hop is more important that someones skin colour. Mr collipark is black and he’s playing a big part in destroying the Hip Hop that I know and love. Rick Ruben on the other hand played a huge part in building the Hip Hop that I know, love and respect. Scarface’s use of the term “whiteboys” sounds like a generalisation of the label execs in charge of the major labels at the moment, the majority of which are black.

Gang of Whiteboys aka GOW.
Honestly though, it doesn’t seem like being totally clueless about what’s hot in rap is the property of one race. If Scarface knew what was hot he wouldn’t have put out that horrid cautionary song about not committing to a woman with the bad video in the rented mansion looking all rotund. And he certainly wouldn’t have been wearing a bedazzled 9x Ed Hardy shirt on VH!!!
“Started haul-assin, my Fila came unfastened, I fell and went to jail and came back as an assassin” is no less brilliant a line though.

I really feel he didn’t think before he spoke. This is gonna be one of those “I was misquoted” things.
There are people of all races who are in touch with what’s going on in the areas that made rap music what it is today. Whether living in the projects elbow to elbow with family members or if they’re there by proxy. It’s so easy to blame white people for “destroying” rap music when in reality it goes back to what is being purchased and copycats who perpetuate the garbage on the radio.
The whole industry as a whole has been dumbed down and instead of people isolating themselves from all the bird walkin’ and autotuning, they’re xeroxing it to make a dollar. I don’t blame anyone for that. I don’t know the inner-workings of the industry but I’m pretty sure no one was held at gunpoint to make “Marco Polo” or any of the tracks on Shawty Lo’s table coaster.
There are black executives that are telling established artists with a base to do dance records and there are artists paying attention. And there are also white people, like a Rick Rubin, who from what I’ve read and seen from a distance is about as far from “hood” as they come who have done more for this craft that has been forgotten about than most cats have done in decades in this business.
Face is still one of my favorites of all time and I believe he spoke out of frustration. Until this is clarified I’m not gonna go Iraqi shoe man on him.

Miss. Info, Maybe my line about the mother ship was out of place and just as dumb as Face’s comment about WHITE PEOPLE and I apologize for that, but just cause his album is doing bad is no reason for Racist comments.
He is supposed to be a leader in the game and right now he is looking like a dumb ass ignorant person from the hood. Doesn’t he realize that album sales are down and that ringtone sales offer another way to put food on the plate or is he that dumb?
Racisim is still alive and well and not only amongst blacks and white, but with arabs, asians and latino as well which is why the world we live in continues to go to shit. We may be advance as far as the technology goes, but spiritually, we are over 1000 yrs behind. We need to change as people…..

The comment @21 is exactly the kind of weird state of hiphop thing that Scarface is commenting on!! That is the snake that has invaded the garden of the culture.
I’ll put it like this back when Mass Appeal magazine was edited by Boudicon Army it was authentic and wild style (a cover close up of Lee’s face and scar) then all of a sudden a new editorial staff comes in the pandering to the white (yes I said it WHITE) hipster demographic was jarring (IT IS GENTRIFICATION OF THE CULTURE) and because a dude like Sacha Jenkins was involved in the magazine revamp does that mean that black people can’t comment about it?? So what there are black label execs, we all know the pimpin hand NEVER changes. Truth be told BET only really went to shit AFTER Bob Johnson sold it to Viacom. That is the real shit Scarface is commenting on. I’m kinda disappointed @ Info for actin like she don’t know!

Boy cult = misinformed idiot.
And for the record that magazine (Gassed-A-Peel,) was always on some outta-town blue corn chip culture vulture shit. Sorry, but in my book close-ups of buck-fiftys aren’t edgy. Not like I’m singling them out, most of that genre of mags are equally gay. And even though I just finished watching a pristine bootleg of “Milk” and have really been reconsidering my penchant for using the term “gay” negatively, it just seems right tonight!
Anyway, I love to hate most rap related media, but I’m equally in love with rap music (even at its low points,) and picking people/situations apart. l So I guess I’m a minute, nearly insignificant part of the gossip and “hate” problem, but a part none the less. And I really like this site for some reason! Maybe because there’s something endearing about Info and she has a pretty atypical spin?
And as for White people leaving hip-hop alone, man – please put a clue on lay away and be consistent with your payments. There has never, I repeat never been a time when C——rs (and predominantly Jews, who often don’t even consider themselves “White” per se,) haven’t been instrumental in this shit. Not just in business, but within the so called “elements” as well. (Just for clarification though, I believe the 5 elements to be a manufactured marketing scheme engineered by… wait for it…. The G.O.W.B. (That’s Gang of White Boys to you.). No question that hip-hop is essentially a Black art form, an extension of Blues, Jazz, etc. Still though, “numbers don’t lie” (sorry for having to use that term) when it comes to this shit, and I’ll bet Jimmy Iovine’s and Lyor Cohen’s tax returns could probably confirm that.
Lucky for me I reject all aspects of capitalism, and I mean ALL. Homie, I pay for nothing. Nothing Lebowski!!!! I’m using a free computer in a library that I hitched to – in a Benz that is. But I wanna rep this culture son, so I mostly hunt and gather my food, cus you need sustenance to effectively hustle. I als crochet my own doo-rags from shredded shopping bags, whittle my Jesus pieces, and generally stay fly while rejecting capitalism as a rule. I even brew my own bathtub cognac in the tub. This freedom is why I can play Memph Bleek’s last album on repeat without a preoccupation with his low sales tainting my listening experience. And trust me, that feels good!!!
If none of this made sense, you definitely need to abuse more substances!

It’s not necessarily the “white guys” per se but being that “Europeans” created this greed machine called capitalism then they are to blame initially by default.
However, the rappers themselves are also at fault for selling their souls essentially for hoping they are going to see returns on their music that never ever materializes for them financially. The industry as a whole is the ultimate cock tease for lack of a better phrase and guess what that makes Scarface and anyone who went down a similar path for success. We are all to blame really! Man, Scarface’s argument is exactly the type of talk that make me cringe inside. It’s just so incredibly counter-productive. He’s got a point in people not familiar with hiphop making a lot of decisions. But it’s really not about race. Just look around and you’ll se plenty of black people ruining the game. It’s racist, pure and simple.
And all the people on here yapping about ”leave our music alone” are just stupid. 1) You’de have less people buying your music and 2) imagine if white people would say ”leave us alone”. You’de go CRAZY! Stop being hypocritical and stop thinking it’s okay to voice racist opinions just because you’re black and have ”experienced the pain”.
Oh, and before you pull the race card on ME – I’m black too, so I’ll pull one right back at you.

Im curious as to why this is so “bad for hip-hop”. I don’t agree with the way he said it, but he’s getting to a deeper point I think. Sometimes, we put too much on rappers to be profound in what they say but en masse, that aint happening.
Even though he sounds like a brute when he says it, his point about the artists-the driving force behing hip-hop- have no real power within the industry. Its a “you can play on the team, but you’ll never own it” type of feeling that I get from this industry.
maybe I’m off here, but doesn’t Scarface seem like he’s on to something after reading that dunderhead’s comment about “giving thanks…”? When we keep saying “lets get over it”, you’re undermining the individual experience of every person who has come into close contact with racism.
Not saying racism is the culprit here, just saying that its not logical to say race has “nothing to do with it” unless you know his personal experience. In my opinion, of course.

Honestly, everyone has some valid points. I also love that there is finally some sort of dialouge about the state of hip hop. I really do hope (hip hop) it crashes and burns to the ground. Then, only the REAL artist will rise like a phoenix from the ashes. I really believe there is a big agenda to mentally enslave “us”.
If you really do some research, you will discover that a lot of humungous corporate conglomorates that has taken over major black owned or black run for instance. Take BET for example that was bought by Viacom some years ago. For those that don’t know who Viacom is, let’s that just say they own CBS, MTV, Showtime & Paramount to name a few. Now, how canyou not think that there is some sort of agenda being pushed? 1st phase: Rid the network of any hardcore hip hop 2nd Phase: cross promote the newly polished acts on our sister networks to gain a white audience MTV,VH1 etc. 3rd phase: alienate the older, die hard, hip hop heads.Who really wants to share their music with their kid sister?
With the removal of the daily rap city (that did not cater to anyways)edgier acts, artist; either sold out with a party record or made female oriented music. Without having a platfom like to promote their projects on television due to pressures from execs. Artists like the Wu Tang, M.O.P, Onyx had little to no exposure in the mainstream.
I can literally write 100 pages on why yo ni@@as are being enslaved.
BTW. Did you know there are only 5 major record companies in the world. Do you think La Reid, JD, or Jay Z run any of them? Chappelle said it best: “They shouldn’t have given you niggas no money!”
I guess I’m gonna be labled a hater now. I ain’t. I’m comfortable with my life. I’m just a nigga that use to wanna die for this shit here!

I AGREE WITH FACE, MAYBE HE DIDNT HAVE TO PUT ALL THE FOCUS ON “WHITE BOYS” EVEN THOUGH CAUCASIONS ARE ULTIMATELY IN CHARGE OF MAJOR LABELS. I WOULD BE PISSED OFF ABOUT RECORD SALES ALSO. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GOT RAPPERS OUT HERE PUTTIN’ OUT TRACKS WITH 16 BARS OF THE SAME STUPI PHRASE. HE IS RIGHT, HIP HOP IS BEING FAILED THROUGH PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT EVEN ARTISTS. THEY (RECORD LABELS) ARE READY TO SIGN THE FIRST THING WITH A CORNY CATCH LINE. IT IS NOT JUST THE RADIO EITHER IT IS THE LISTENERS OF RADIO WHO KEEP CALLIN IN REQUESTING THE SAME SONG EVERYDAY. IF THEY HERE A SONG THAT IS VERY LYRICAL BY AN UNKNOWN ARTIST THEY SHOW NO LOVE, BUT IF YOU GET THAT SAME SONG, PUT IT ON THE RADIO AND GET LIL WAYNE TO SPEAK IN THE BEGINING, ITS AN AUTOMATIC HIT. WE NEED TO GET REAL HIP-HOP FANS BACK ALONG WITH A&R’s WHO CAN RECOGNIZE REAL TALENT. I AM AN ARTIST MYSELF AND I CAN ADMIT WHEN I HEAR A TRACK THAT REALLY DESERVES RADIO PLAY. I HAVE DONE TRACKS WITH TWO GUYS FROM ISTANBUL, THEY ARE CLEAR ACROSS THE WORLD, THEY ARE VERY TALENTED BUT YOU WILL PROBABLY NEVER HEAR ABOUT THESE GUYS, BECAUSE THE PUBLIC CANT RECOGNIZE REAL MUSIC. THIS IS VERY SAD FOR HIP-HOP. I WOULD NEVER HATE ON SOULJA BOY OR PUFF IN THEIR BUSINESS MIND FRAME, BUT I COULD NEVER CALL THEM REAL ARTISTS EITHER, THAT IS JUST NOT THEIR DEPARTMENT. I purposely wrote this in all caps so please dont comment on that.

Breaking News: Asian-American Bitch found to have singlehandedly caused the downfall of a cultural movement which by all accounts seems to be thriving globally in both mainstream and underground circles! Suspicion growing that said Asian-American Bitch is also responsible for global warming!

amazing how (1) statements causes a HUGE mess…
IMHO… the problem ain’t Soulja Boy, on the business side he is a model for other young teens and adults; it doesn’t mean i agree with even half of what he does!
The game just lacks balance right now and the artists who do bring about balance don’t sell because we SO CALLED TRUE HIP HOP HEADS don’t buy music… so the artists starve while Lil Wayne (whom every real hip hop fan supposedly hates) sells 1 mil in 7.
Miss Info-I apologize for the herb who disrespected you.. btw-how is the adsense $$$ treating ya…

It’s really not about being sensitive. Sure everyone’s allowed to voice their opinion, but Scarface’s statement is not very intelligent. If you wanna play the race game, then why not put some of the blame on the supposedly black listeners not going out to cop that real hiphop? Pulling the race card is a sure way to create an endless discussion and an endless blame game that in the end mean nothing.
On the real I think the whole issue of race is problematic in rap. I mean, I love Cube but it’s hard to defend a song like ”Cave Bitch”. Racism and prejudice is wrong and dispicable regardless if its white on black, black on asian, or hispanics on middle easterns.

Whats with all these people saying white people dont know shit about Hip Hop. I’m 20 years old, white and love hip Hop, I respect the culture and can probably school most of these so called “fans” who say that soulja boy, shawty lo and Lil Wayne are the best rappers on the Hip Hop that I know. If any1 is gonna chat racist bullshit that white people are destroying Hip Hop can kindly fuck off!

“Were the Iovines & Cohens around when Herc and Bam were hookin up to the light posts?”
Boy Cult, you miss the point, and even though it’s a rhetorical question, the answer is NO, both of their Bar-Mitzvahs happened to be on that very day, so they missed it.
