I'm trying to say that you cannot censor an artist just because parents don't take enough of an active role in their kids lives (marginalized youth or not, because remember waaaaay more white kids from the suburbs buy rap albums than minority kids). Speech isn't just free when u agree or approve of what is being said. It would be nice if rappers told more of the truth in their rhymes and talked about more uplifting things but on the other hand how many Preachers, teachers, police officers, and elected officials aren't doing the same amount of damage with their actions but no1 is up in arms about it. The reason why Hip Hop is being attacked is because it pisses off old ppl (white & black) that an entire generation of young black ppl are becoming wealthy and are now surpassing the nations best CEO's on various wealth list. It pisses them off that some kid from the south is on BET rapping with about 50k worth of diamonds in his mouth. But no matter what the issues with HIP HOP (legitimate or not) it's not for ppl outside of the culture to censor and its not even for ppl like Russell Simmmons censor. Change will come when parents start explaining to kids that this is entertainment just like Terminator2, Good Fellas, the Godfather, Scarface, etc. I see where ur coming from Drum Doc. Its musical expression and when artist censor themselves then slowly but surely they'll (the gov't) will censor everything they deem as offensive (which will no doubt affect urban culture). I do feel that a lot of the topics talked about in Hip Hop are frivolous, sexist, etc. but its NOT for some OUTSIDE entity to tell us what we can and can't say. At first, Russell was asking the artist not to use the words in their own raps and thats self-censorship. Then he back-peddled and asked mainstream outlets to bleep the words (they do that anyway). Parents should teach their kids to look at their favorite rappers the same way the look at the favorite actors. Hell, parents should start talking to their kids and stop expecting HIP HOP artist to babysit them.
