Rihanna speaks to Glamour: “I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears…”
Posted by Miss Info under crime , life beyond rap , photos , quotes , relationships and family[21] Comments
On Thursday, ABC will get their scoop, with Rihanna x Diane Sawyer sit down, for Good Morning America (and 20/20 on Fri). Diane has deftly and firmly handled Boris Yeltsin and Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, so I only hope she doesn’t “Ms. Katie” this conversation with Rihanna.
Meanwhile, Rihanna was already interviewed by Glamour Mag for their Women of the Year issue (with Michelle Obama on the cover). Here’s a couple excerpts:
Glamour: Let’s talk about this past year—you’ve obviously been through some difficult things. How did the people around you help you cope?
Rihanna: My friends and family have been extremely supportive, and everyone has been there for me. But at some point you are there alone. It’s a lonely place to be—no one can understand. That’s when you get close to God.
Glamour: Are you referring to the [Chris Brown] incident?
Rihanna: I am talking about starting with the night [before] the Grammys and then on. That was not the only thing that occurred this year. The picture leaking…it was one thing after another.
Glamour: You’re talking about the photo [reportedly of Rihanna’s injured face taken by police after Brown assaulted her] that was allegedly leaked by cops. You handled that so well; you kept silent in the press.
Rihanna: It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women.
more of Rihanna in Glamour after the jump…
Glamour: Do you feel that this experience has laid the groundwork for coping with anything so public again?
Rihanna: It has taught me so much. I felt like I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can’t go back home?
………
Glamour: If you could offer a message to the millions of young women who look up to you, what would you tell someone who found herself in a similar situation?
Rihanna: Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don’t dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women.
……….
Glamour: Jay-Z once said that your challenge as an artist was going to be to make people relate to you as a human being. What do you think he meant by that?
Rihanna: Before, there was an innocence to me. It was a perfect image. So the minute I did something imperfect, it was a big deal. I think that’s what he was referring to: People forget that after we get to our hotel rooms at night, we take a shower, we watch TV, eat room service and do normal things. Behind it all, we are still human beings.
………..
Glamour: Your look has evolved from the beginning of your career.
Rihanna: In the first two years of my career, there were a lot of restraints on what I could do. I couldn’t wear certain colors of lipstick, like bright pink, dark pink or red; [my lips] had to be natural. Eventually, I stopped communicating with certain people at the label, and did exactly what I wanted to do. And that was to cut my hair, dye it black, change my clothes, change my sound. Really to just express myself.

“I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard.”
Am I missing something here? did she speak out against domestic violence? did she give advice on what to do if you’re ever in that situation???
or I have to go read the full article to find out?

Hmmm…
So, what is she saying? That Chris Brown regularly abused her, as opposed to that being an “isolated” incident like he said it was?
I wonder if she’s just speaking this way on it to save her image?
Honestly, I dont know what to think.lol

“speaking out 3wks before your album drops – fail”
I SO AGREE WITH THIS COMMENT!
I BELIEVE SHE SHOULD HAVE HER SAY…BUT IF SHE PULLS A “LARRY KING” AND DOESN’T SAY MUCH OF ANYTHING…I’M DONE!
SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED, GOOD DAY AND I’M DONE!

That is true. W/ the enormous amount of blame that gets placed on her as it is, for just her doing her job or merely speculating is ridiculous.
Posting on recent posts are fine.

Hypothetically, she would just need some open minded yet “no nonsense”, trustworthy moderators.

Wait, so she’s being honored by GLAMOUR for being a domestic violence victim? that last album was 2+ years ago, so it can’t be for any actual work. This whole I changed to express myself mumbo jumbo is annoying too. I don’t know, good luck to her and her team.
On another note Rihanna has a hairline that would make Memphis Bleek jealous.

This isn’t a fun post.
I still can’t/wont listen to Chris Brown records. He might as well be Michael Jackson.

A message board would be a great idea! Question: when do we seperate the man from the music? I hate what Rkelly did, but I can’t sit uo here and act like I still don’t step in the name of love.

Well as somebody who has supported both of them throughout this ordeal I must say I was left a little confused after reading what RiRi said. I still wish them both the best. I wasnt expecting her to throw him under the bus and I would loved it if she could be honest about her true feelings for CB both then and now but her so called fans would slay her for doing so.
I wish I liked RiRis new songs more I have always liked her music and felt her voice that irks/annoys most worked for her and the music she does
I cant wait for CBs Crawl video

I thought the glamour interview went well. I do not feel sorry for chris brown, no man, no matter how pissed he is has the right to beat a woman. Quit making excuses for his behavior, his interviews are even worse than what we’ve gotten so far from Rihanna.
This has NOTHING to do with rihanna being the bigger star and the industry jumping on her side. Do you losers not know the history of women and how these types of things were kept secret and shushed away from the public? Do you not understand the oppression of women, especially women of color?? More stories like this need to be recognized by the public and men need to know that they will get heavily scrutinized for doing stupid shit, like beating a woman. Maybe if more stories became public, more women would understand that it’s okay to speak up for yourself and maybe, just maybe, these woman would know their worth and stay away from physically abusive relationships.
Thank you Rihanna for staying away from Chris Brown. If she would have protected him or “gone back” to him, it would have been over.
