Rihanna on Good Morning America: “It’s embarrassing that’s the kind of person I fell in love with…F. love. Because love is so blind.”

“When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn’t be held responsible for telling them to go back. even if Chris never hit me again, who’s to say that their boyfriend would not. Who’s to say that they won’t kill these girls?” she said. “These are young girls and I just didn’t realize how much of an impact I had on these girls’ lives until that happened…
Don’t react off of love. F Love. Because love is so blind.”
Read more of the transcript here. The rest of the Rihanna x Diane Sawyer interview will be Friday on 20/20.
I didn’t really expect this angle. She’s taking the full blame for going back to Chris immediately after the assault, and spinning it into a breaking-away for the greater good. Which I think is very accurate actually. It feels rehearsed, but effective.
UPDATE: After watching it again, definitely think this was sharply crafted. I remember the reaction that alot of women had when they saw Chris and Rihanna getting out of that private plane in LA, when he had to make his first court appearance. It was disgust. Now the reality is that, many many women do just that in the aftermath of abuse…but the fact that Rihanna did, and then now says she broke away because she thought of “her impact,” is very smart. She and Chris breaking up because she couldn’t deal with the scrutiny, or the bad pub, or even because she couldnt forgive…none of that has the power of this angle.

The good thig about this interview is that it seems they will never be getting back together again and that is the best part about it all!!
They need to both just move on…

Good to finally hear someone in this situation speak out to young women experiencing domestic violence. Now if only the two of them would talk about how it was NOT an “isolated incident”…do you think she’ll dodge that question from Diane, since she said in the police report he’d hit her before?

Yes, but does RIHANNA have to live her life as a poster child for domestic violence. If we knew for absolute certain that this was a one time incident, does it still mean that RIHANNA can’t be with CHRIS for the sake of young girls? Still wondering if this was more a fight then a beat down, and whether the handlers told CHRIS not to bother explaining it since those on the Domestic Violence agenda wont hear u.

I dont think Whitney Blamed bobby. she admitted that she was doing drugs before bobby, it just picked up cause they were unhappy. she didnt blame bobby, she spoke about mistakes she made too. I dont think this is the same.

I’m sure her and her people went over it more then a few times to make sure she was comfy with the topic and what she had to say.
Knowing the people close to me that have dealt with this issue, I couldn’t imagine having to maintain with the public eye focused on you like that at your weakest moment.

Wow! I don’t think it was as rehearsed as you think Info. Its been a while since the incident and all this time in reflection and looking back and time to see her situation for what it was/is..I think it just became easy to separate the “feelings” portion from the “reality” portion of their story. And even still it gets blurred a little but still I think she’s speaking her own story and not the mash-up of hers and her publicist.
Either way I like how she thought of others..what a way to use your celebrity to potentially help and save others.

I am so proud of this young girl and she couldn’t have spoken truer words. She can reach so many women that have are going through an abusive relationship and are “in love”. I myself, went through an abusive relationshp and did not leave because I thought I was in love and she is right…Love is blind. I stayed in the relationship and even blamed myself for getting abused! It took me years to figure this out and I am so proud of her for speaking out. Hopefully, this will help other women who are in the same situation and will not go back. It may take years after the first hit but he will hit you again! I am sure that Chris cried and apologized and he did love her but he needs to get help and she needed to move on….which she did! F love is right!!!!

Man as bad as she got beat, I just can not believe this was 100% his fault. There has to be more to the story, and why all of the sudden both of them are putting out albums out at the same exact time. There has to be some type of planning behind these interviews. I rather they just put out music rather than going to 10 different interviews saying the same stuff. Just move on and learn from this situation.

i kinda feel some sort of way with her saying “f– love” — not only is she teaching THAT to all these young girls that look up to her, but by her saying it on such a grand stage.. it’ll cause millions of people to have that perception of love. and we already know how gullible people can be when they see it on TV.
im sure everyone’s said ‘f– love’ at some point but that truly is the best feeling. people should strive for that everyday not move away from it. [/end emoness]
sidebar: does she really talk like that or was she nervous? because all the pauses and time elapsed between words was almost OD and didnt seem normal.

…but shes right. Love is an emotion. And with it’s strength can at times come very poor judgment. I don’t take it should or would be taken as “Love is bad”. But rather that Love alone doesn’t mean things are all Peaches and Cream.
Hopefully all these “young girls” that are being generically referenced have people in their lives to get guidance from besides Rhianna.

^that would be the hope, but nowadays its becoming less and less apparent. thats why all these kids look up to stars and what not.
if Rihanna is saying “F– love” these ‘young girls’ will take those words literal so now they wont go chasing it, but rather live out loveless relationships aka whoredom for years to come. and im def not that dude to say all girls are slores.
i guess im just thinking of the social impact this is gonna have

I could see people like Will Smith and Jada being so good at something like that.

It’s interesting to really hear her speak for the first time in such a serious tone for a serious interview. Don’t know what to make of her personality just yet. This is her time to make that connection with everyone. At least she’s not wearing a bow tie. She looks gorgeous with that white dress. And she’s crying…no one ever likes to see a woman cry.

i just don’t like how its predetermined that any female celebrity involved in domestic abuse then has to become the mouthpiece for it…. do we really believe pulling away for the greater good was because of her or was it the courts and media pressuring her to become the new face of teen domestic violence

Rihanna is speaking straight from the text book about abused and battered women!
I study psych and this is the exact thing that is said statistically about what happens to abused women and also how they react.
Its the exact text book theory..
Which leads me to believe SHE WAS TOLD/TAUGHT TO SAY THIS! Now…im not saying she doesnt mean what shes saying, but this is PR work for sure! This is rehearsed!
I DONT like the comment she made about being embarrassed that this is “the type of person” she fell in luv with!
So, I guess this means she isnt going to admitt to being violent herself?
What about the violent fights she admitted to having with her brother and busting a glass bottle over his head. Or the two times in the past she slapped chris?
She expects us to believe that she is trying to take some stand for “abused” women and shes doing this cause she wants to give them the right example yet she EXPLOITS domestic violence and sales her story to the highest bidder when her album is about to drop and stayed silent before?
Not tp mention trying to get the judge to ease up on the restraining order, alleged late night creeps to hotels and that was, what, a 1 or 2 months ago?
PUH LEASE!
No one deserves what happend to rihanna! She has been through enough. so has chris.
But I question her sincerity and intentions behind “speaking out”. If your gonna tell it, you need to tell it all!
Now she’s embarrassed that this is the person she fell in love with? So theres nothing decent about him anymore?
He is a scumbag for what he did, but in interviews he never tried to throw her under the bus, or make himself the victim. (of course he couldnt have, or people would have been mad at him for doing that.)
But, her all of a sudden being an advocate for abused women the week her album is about to drop and reciting text book definitions of abusers and how women react and “looking at it as a third person” (i swear i actually read that in my book in womens studies.lol) IS FUGGAZY!

DAMN I WAS THINKING THE SAME SHIT HAHAHAHAH GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!
But we have to be nice to her because of the picture!! Shes the victim..
I dont want to marginalize the situation at all but the Sharon Stone nutty look and her spin on it was all wrong.. she had two options one was to do what she did which was a major FAIL and the other was to say hey it was a co-abusive relationship of equal give and take and thats not healthy! What he did to me that night was wrong but dont think I just sat there and took a beating even though he is bigger and stronger I defended myself and kids should know that no matter how much you love the passion and energy these types of relationships bring they are not healthy and I dont want to promote that in any way shape or form.. Instead she tossed the homie under a bus and played the victim… which everyone knows isn’t the whole truth! Chicks who have been beat up by a guy multiple times (8-9) and fear them so dont agree to go to puffy mansion with their abuser or share planes with them.. They dont want to be anywhere near that person.. this entire story is and has been funky since day one!
Good post as always brit

you’re blind for chris brown. have you seen his absolutely horrible interviews? He IS playing the victim card, “why did I do this?”??? “What is wrong with you?”…questions he to this day still asks himself? What…did his PR team not teach him self reflection? To this day, I don’t even think his brain understands the velocity of the situation and what he did to her.

Im not “blind” about breezey! i dont even like him that much! i never found him that attractive!(light skinned = fail lol) never even bought his albums.
(maybe the bootleg) i actually bought good girl gone bad.
I dont doubt that he beat her or hes wrong, how could he NOT know what he did the picture is everywhere and he has practically lost everything. BOTH OF THEM!
I think when chris brown spoke he said nothing and sounded dumb and is risking his career by not telling the whole truth. And think its out of GUILT for what he did for her and hes trying to help her save face (and himself)
How is it playing the victim when he says he did something horrible and he cant believe, or understand why he did what he did. he feels bad and he still loves her.
i dont see the victim in that. is see a depressed woman beater that doesnt know how to pick up the pieces and move on.lol
Here…i see a victim. rihanna a straight victim reciting for the text book what a rehabilitated victim says. (right when her albums about to drop)

Let me get this part straight…it’s not ok for rihanna to speak out before her album drops but it’s ok for chris brown too? Stupid reasoning online audience.

chris brown is speaking, but he aint sayin sh*t! he aint throwing her under the bus and saying controversal stuff to sale records and look like a victim/hero at the same time.

I wonder where your source of cynicism towards Rhianna comes from. You question her sincerity to be a marketing ploy to sell records, why resort to this when her last album was hot?The timing of it is kinda iffy i must admit.
The ‘Rumble in the Lambo’ as it happened will always give Chris Brown bad PR inspite of what Rhianna says.
I cringe when i read comments like yours. It’s a typical reaction, especially in most blackwomen to be less sympathetic to other women in abusive relationships.Maybe the norm,a smack-down is commonplace in the hood. You can’t turn a soft stance on the issue for fear of throwing Breezy under the bus.
As for the music,if only we could get the Transgressor vs the Victim record.
1.Rhianna ft.Beanie Sigel
VS
2.Chris Brown ft.Jay-z

after having a career damaging incident she DOES need to do things to save her potentially damaged career.

lets be clear. I’m not trying to give Chris a pass on what took place, nor denying the right Rhianna has to speak out.
What I want to know is what exactly took place between them in that car (i.e. Crime360/Myth Buster style).
I feel like Chris is manning up and taking full blame to save his career/public stock value. Basically if he would’ve went to trail an tried to fight it, the media would’ve buried his career, regardless of what would’ve came out about the role Rhianna played that night in the car. Lets be clear, if they were in a moving vehicle what really took place and what did she do to get away from the incident. Did she make him feel comfortable to be abusive? People close to them say this wasn’t the first time.
Think about it, if someone(male/female) slammed your face on the dashboard/window, what would you do, especially if the car isn’t traveling that fast. And when did the biting take place? Seriously a lot of what is being reported doesn’t add up…thats all I’m saying.

People get a grip!! He shouldn’t have beat the crap out of her. And for the ones who want to play both sides of the fence and say…”Oh he was wrong for what he did but I’m sure she instigated the situation…blah, blah, blah” guess what people??? He could have WALKED AWAY. He had that option. He chose not to take it. I agree with what a previous poster said. I really don’t think Chris realizes the magnitude of this situation because honestly he’s very young. When I saw that interview I just saw a kid who was obviously sorry about what had happened but probably hadn’t yet grasped the true detriment of the situation. And I’m not talking about career-wise as far as sales and endorsements. I’m referring to the cycle of abuse that can continue if he does not get help with his problem. And no I’m not saying that Rihanna does not share some culpability of this incident because I’m sure she does. But when it comes down to it, there was NOTHING she could have done, short of pulling a weapon on him (gun, knife, etc.) that warranted the beatdown she received. Chris is a talented kid and I hope he is able to TRULY learn from this situation and continue with his career.

I do see what u mean. But… have u ever hit ur man??? I HAVE! And my man is not abusive… doesnt raise his voice or any of that shit. I’m 5 feet, 135lbs… he’s 6’1, 245lbs. I have straight busted blood on his face the 1st hit!!!! I was just that mad, and I WAS DEAD ASS WRONG TOO!!!!! That shit is inexcusable. In hindsight, I was young and hurt emotionally— whatever..
My point is…. acting like a female can’t hurt a man is a form of denial. In 2 swings (both perfect, might I add), I blacked both eyes, cut a bridge of a nose and swole a lip. Blood from the nose exterior and interior and mouth. I don’t wear rings or any of that shit. HELLO!!!!!!! My man is shaped like a linebacker… AND he’s no sucker… he held me and pushed my ass away. HOWEVER had he stole on me… wtf… would I have been mad?!?!?! SHOCKED yes, mad… no! I should have kept my fucking hands to myself. But I was young… it was an experience.
If Rihanna did hit him, and he blacked on her… I can understand. How many people have ever been hit by anyone and had an oh shit moment and whipped the other persons ass!????? That’s never happened regardless of gender. Of course. Im not excusing what Chris did… I’m saying lets be fair.
So there’s nothing wrong with CHICKS (in ref to ur comment) but PEOPLE need not act like being hit doesn’t hurt. I dont give a rats ass if its male or female… KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF…
ITS REALLY THAT DAMN SIMPLE.

If you got on a white shirt versus a blue shirt guess what a little smudge in the middle would do…more to the white then the blue…I don’t think she was as beat up as we really think she was but I don’t know all the other details…
And even then….you females need to keep ya hands of males cuz its usually females who provoke things to even go that far….right or wrong.
Now my shirt comparison might seem stupid to ya’ll but that ike turner comparison is stupid as well..you really think chris brown was beatin rihanna for no reason..or cuz he could or even at all?…cmon with that people

idk it seems very sincere to me.. if Rihanna gives this interview and we say its rehearsed and crafted, then she cant win. what else could she have said? i feel for her

You called it, Info. How she was sitting in that chair was totally Sharon Stone/Basic Instinct. Never was a Rihanna fan but her imagery is sick. I like that Eastern European/Black Russian vibe she’s throwing around for her album. Very cold war.

Miss Info “I remember the reaction that alot of women had when they saw Chris and Rihanna getting out of that private plane in LA, when he had to make his first court appearance. It was disgust.”
The statistics explain a lot don’t they? You have regular females who’ll look at Rihanna like, Chris just humiliated and abused you why the hell would you go back, right?
Then you have the other females who, love Chris Brown or feel sorry for him in some way for whatever reasons and have forgiven him, they will turn to Rihanna like she’s exploiting the situation to her advantage, it’s interesting.
I think thats portion of the 8-9 statistics of abused women who would go back in similar situations because now they are defending Chris in some way because Rihanna’s bruising has gone and they like him again.
I would like to know the statistic of how many times a man can cheat on his girl, and how many times she would come back before she says enough is enough, I know it’s not 8-9, that would be useful information.
Regardless of what Rihanna says somebody somewhere is not going to be happy. I wonder what the reaction would be if she came out saying she loves him and misses him and doesn’t understand what happened, I think outrage.

I agree. I don’t think there is anything that Rihanna could say or do to “appease” most folk in this situation.

No matter what either of them say some folk will never be satisfied.
Fortunately the majority of these drama hungry people don’t matter.

Having watched that I think its part real feeling/ part for the camera / and a whole lot of scripting and rehearsal beforehand. The timing of the interview is also sketchy but I suppose if it helps some girls get out of a bad situation then its a good thing.
That being said, its a sad reflection of the world that a girl thats getting beaten needs Rihanna to tell her to walk away

Love me some RiRi, and it is good she’s speaking about what happened and we get to hear her side and story. I have to agree with Info on this interview being crafted. Now I am not saying that she is lying or such, just that her PR team did a great a job in coaching her. Peep the clip at from 3:13 and on, that sounds too scripted. The same goes for Breezy’s interview (he was just horrible). Using her power to help others?? Nah is more like my album is dropping, Brown did his interviews trying to clean his image, now is my turn I need to do the same. Do you guys think she will really tell what happened that night or just brush over it? At the end of the day no matter what these two say, people are either going to love it or be skeptical.

Alotta women are dumb as shit for stickin’ up for that dude…
Honestly, I feel like this interview is very, very “convenient” for just HAPPENING to happen at the same time she has something coming out, and just as it was becoming old news.
But at the same time, all this shit with these women on some ‘defend Chris’ shit is tragic. I personally know a girl who’s mega-defensive about this whole thing, and seems more upset for how this affects CB’s career than the incident itself. It’s attitudes like that which make girls settle for the shit they go through. They’ll sit and talk about what a fucked up person Rihanna is for doin’ something like this, which really only tells me that had it been them in the same predicament as she was, they’d accept it.
Again, I think the timing of this is really questionable, but the outrage flying towards Rihanna is the most ridiculous shit ever. We blamin’ the victim now?
-D!

Boy, a lotta of men who talking in here going to jail. You let these dumb ass girls in here convince you that if she hit you, you can kick her ass; a lot of yall going to jail. Thats not the way the world is. The next generation of black woman are in serious trouble. If, like that young lady up top, are fighting your man, punching him, cutting his nose, etc. You are in for a bad ending. Young black women, you better gain some knowledge.

WOW at ppl thinking if you want RiRi to be 100% HONEST (TMZ who hates CB said the court docs say she was the aggressor that night I was NOT there so I do not know I will find out 2morrow her side of the story)then you must feel she got what she deserved! I support them BOTH bugt right is right and wrong is wrong. People behind the scenes who were on tour with them have been sending tweets since Feb that nobody knows the “truth” and frankly I wish they would SPILL the beans or SHUT UP already! Twitter has been on fiyah with folks saying she is lying and they have seen her strike him FIRST! That changes the game IMO. Again CB was WRONG for assualting her that night NO DOUBT, however IF she was hitting him 1st or that night then she needs to COME CLEAN and stop faking the funk. Again I support RiRi and CB! I have never bought a cd from either and I am not some teenage love sick puppy either.
DV is a real serious issue and BLACK women take it very serious. Why must black women always get accused of being everything but a child a GOD enough already!
If this is truly RiRis truth then I am glad she spoke out and I pray her story touches somebody BUT if she is indeed lying or telling half truths then that will catch up with her as well.
CBs PR team has sucked from day one I just had to say that for the 100th time lol
RiRi is killing in that white dress get it BISH!
SO now I am ready to see Crawl and Russian Roulette
Oh and the JUDGE tore them APART she didnt have a light bulb moment IMO POW!

This is all too much to absorb, yet so easy to see through. The public wants to participate because it was PUBLICIZED. Rihanna is more embarassed she was exposed than the fact that it happened. It made her take a look at herself in a new light. Was she prone to bad boys? Was Chris a bad boy with a good boy image? In all her photos with him, she seemed rather happy. Something went wrong, and the two know there is a secret they just won’t tell. Rihanna may have pushed him to a limit she did not know he was capable of but that NEVER condones violence. Dudes, if she’stoo much for you to handle, WALK OFF!!!
