Rest In Peace, Guru: Legendary GangStarr MC dies of cancer, at age 43 (Updated)
Posted by Miss Info under beef , hmmm....? , low point 2010 , not good for hip hop , not good for humanity , old music , quotes , relationships and family , sigh.... , ugh[123] Comments
The news broke that after a long battle with cancer, Keith Elam aka Guru from the group GangStarr, passed away on Monday at the age of 43. Just Blaze tweeted this overlooked album cut about lost loved ones, “In Memory Of,” from Guru and DJ Premier’s incredible Moment of Truth album from 1998.
Sadly, even the news of Guru’s death is sullied by the divisive nature of his alleged final statement….And while I’m kind of shocked that some reputable news sources just included the statement without any reference to the debate about the statement’s legitimacy….
you can read it for yourself, after the jump…
UPDATE: Also after the jump….Solar responds via twitter, and Capone-n-Noreaga record a freestyle tribute…
(Related Post: Travesty: Guru’s family contradicts Solar’s claims about Guru’s final words)
Guru has been hospitalized since early March, but ever since his condition worsened and his health issues became public, there’s been an uncomfortable series of press releases, youtube pleas, and rumors from opposing sides of Guru’s personal circle. There was his business partner and best friend, Solar, who even gained “power of attorney” for Guru. And then there were Guru’s relatives, who mounted a campaign to protest Solar’s control over Guru’s affairs. As for fans, they were left with little solid information about Guru’s condition…
In the press release announcing Guru’s passing, Solar uses dramatic wording but very little detail about cause of death, with phrases like: “malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed.” But what kind of cancer was this? Especially since it caused, reportedly, both cardiac arrest and a coma? And the coma is key concern to many Guru friends because it is unclear if Guru ever came out of his medically-induced coma. Meanwhile, in Solar’s statement, he says “Guru prepared this letter while he was in the hospital for the fans…”:
I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts** dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.
I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life. (source)
Hopefully, the simple truth of whether or not Guru was ever physically and mentally capable of writing this letter will come to light. If he was able to write the letter, then we all have to accept that his last wishes were to claim that he was the “sole founder” and denounce the shared legacy of Guru and Premier. If he was not able to write or even dictate this letter, then by even including the words “I, Guru, am writing this letter…”, Solar is doing his best friend a terrible disservice all in the effort to push a future agenda. The unanswered questions will taint all of the “events, tributes” and “awards” that the letter makes such a point of preparing for.
UPDATE 1: Solar addressed the rampant speculation about the letter, on twitter.
UPDATE 2: Capone-n-Norega sent over this freestyle tribute to Guru (via 57thAve)
**According to Villanova University, there is an “each one counts” foundation that was founded by former Villanova basketball player Brian Harrington and assistant basketball coach Doug West to help chronically or terminally ill children. I’m not sure if this is the same non-profit that the alleged Guru letter refers to.
On a personal note, when I think of Guru, the legacy I’m most attached to is Gangstarr, with DJ Premier, and these songs….

Not only was the Premo dismissal very fishy, but – assuming, for argument’s sake, that he was actually even able to write or dictate this letter – why would he also spend so much time ridin’ Solar’s dick in his FINAL letter? Like, THAT’s what was on his mind as his life was slipping away — I looooove Solar and hate Premier? Fuckouttahere. Shame on this nigga Solar for fabricating this shit.

This letter is filled with an ulterior motive which is to prove why Solar has so much power and authority. For someone as lyrical and gifted as Guru, this would not be his last words as this letter concentrates purely on Solar, not his life and his family and his friends. I don’t believe this letter at all.

i wonder if people will notice that when you come out of a cardiac coma (especially for over a week), trying to even move a body part is almost impossible, let alone to write or dictate for somebody else….i only know that because i worked part time on a cardiac floor for 2yrs

this is great insight….so if you were in a medically induced coma or a coma of any kind for over a week, then what kind of rehab would be necessary? Would you be able to think straight and tell someone to write this for you?
brooklyn Reply:
April 20th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
when patients go into a coma and are put on vent for weeks, most don’t come out of it (so i guess the first thing is did guru really ever come out of the coma)…
but if they do many get a trach tube to help them breathe (after a 2 day coma & a trach, you can barely speak & are ordered not to) so after weeks the majority of movement is a as simple as a head nods & blinks
the start of physical therapy usually revolves around nodding or blinking to use as recognition
one lady that woke up out of hers 2 weeks ago, only remembers in pieces…she nods to say she remembers her granddaughter but no reaction to show that she remembers having any daughters (they usually need family & those close friends around to get their memory slowly restarted for certain things)
their brains are really scrambled and their limbs are usually shaky at best. just trying to write comes out as a lot of nothing
a lot of physical the goes into getting them stable to write, walk, even put their own socks on
specialist also do speech and swallow test to see when they can actually gain the power to swallow. then eventually they test to see the comprehension of their speech and the length of time before they even try to speak.
my brother came up in the industry & rocked with premo & guru so when he told me about the letter i told him it not likely that he had anything to do with that if it was after a coma…especially being that well put together

A friend of mine had the opportunity to work with Guru and Solar on numereous occasions for magazine articles and Solar almost started a fist fight with my homie just for mentioning the name DJ Premier.
Solar has been acting like a greedy overjealous “protective” wife and Guru let it happen. He always spoke for Guru and acted as his representative even when Guru was healthy.
This letter cant be real, it just reeks too much of Solars ignorant ego.
I simply do not believe that Guru would write his last letter to the world in such a dickwad manner.
Solar was never shit before Guru and now he knows he aint going to be shit after. So go figure…

If this letter was to be written for his fans….LETS KEEP IT REAL… the Majority of his fans.. that I know of… ARE GANGSTARR!!! FANS!! and not Jazzmatazz..no disrespect to that movement…but he’s gonna do down as a MC from gangstarr…. SO WHY IN THE HELL would guru diss his TRUE FANS by saying stuff about PREEMO…thats ridiculous…I FEEL cheated right now…. i been a gangstarr fan for life…. I agree. I also believe that Solar is a major part of the reason that Guru’s health went downhill. When my grandmother was in a coma her monitor levels would spike up whenever different family members talked to her. The same thing is true for my friend who is in a coma right now! My grandmother came out of it bcuz we were all by her side.
They need friends & family, that assurance, that happiness in order to feel encouraged to hang on and strengthen their spirits. By Guru having no one there, he probably felt there was no reason to hold on since he had no encouragement, no voices to hear, nothing.
Solar has blood on his hands! And he will NEVER be accepted!!!
Reply
April 20th, 2010 at 10:26 am
the letter is probably half BS, sure. but the fact still remains that Guru named Solar as his “health proxy.” This person is typically a next of kin if you’re really old or for the average adult, a spouse.
Clearly, Guru and Solar were more than friends. Guru’s family probably hadn’t learned to accept it, nor did Preemo. Unfortunate situation, but people should stop beating up on Solar. It sounds very clearly like he was doing exactly what Guru wanted of him. Plus he was wiping Guru’s ass when he couldn’t do it himself.. egchk.

I don’t know the terms of the falling out, but it couldn’t have been bad enough that a man on his deathbed completely dismissed a whole era of his legacy. I hate to think it, but I think Solar wrote this while Guru was helpless in his hospital bed. If that is true, that is just horrible. Hopefully, someone tries to look into this deeper.

It’s funny how this letter is paragraph one… talks about fans and people he met… then paragraph 2 talks about how good and loyal Solar was/is… then paragraph 3 goes on to bash ex-DJ. For a poetic guy like GURU – I need to say this could not be his last letter, definitely not written by a poet.

I don’t know him from a hole in a wall but I know for a fact that he wouldn’t “out” Premier on his death bed of all places. I just hope that Premier comes out and gives GangStarr fans and supporters a clear understanding (at least his side of it) of their relationship in the last 6-7 years.

peace and blessings to Guru’s physical fam & friends. Father U Cee King Solar…that letter is suspect. This coming from a fan whose been repping Gang Starr since “Just to Get a Rep”. I can’t see how GURU would front on his crew (Bumpy Knuckles, Premo, Lil Dap, etc.) and family, unless there was some ish they wasn’t feeling/liking about Guru’s ways and actions.
Thinking about all the other crews(Def Squad [EPMD], N.W.A., Wu, Em & Royce and D12, DipSet, etc.) that went thru some wild ish, they all manage to come together for one common cause and put the BS behind them.
Where’s smoking gun at to expose this nonsense. Solar is looking like “dead man walking” to a lot of people.

I’m sorry but that letter is very suspect. You’d figure one would like to make peace and understanding before their passing, but just the wording and constant references to solar makes this matter very unsettling. I’m sure there’s more to this than what the public knows, but for now we have a legend to mourn and much music to remember him by. Hold your head up Premier. God bless you GURU.

With the little faith i have left in Humanity, I find it hard to believe that A man of Gurus stature (knowing what he and Premier meant to hip hop, as I’m sure he knew as well) would go to his grave holding a grudge against his former DJ. That would be a contradiction to all of his work. Gangstarr stood for respect, honor and integrity for Hip Hop.

I have a lot of issues with these radio stations not paying the correct homage to the man who helped shape hip hop in the 80’s, 90’s, and forever! It is sad that the playlist on hot97.com is a bunch of HIP POP artists not HIP HOP artists. It is truly sad that you play it on the news for a quick snippet, and play ONE song… there should be a whole weeks worth of music dedicated to him… sorry, now they’re finally playing militia! FINALLY… regardless… should’ve been since yesterday!!!
and about that letter! I don’t know much about guru after the ownerz… I have no clue about solar, but dude is fishy… I just think Guru wouldn’t misspell anything on his letter, cause dude was smart, so, that being said I have a small issue with this part of the letter…

if you think that those are parallel situations with this one, then there’s really no need to debate. Step back from the emotional attachment that we all have for GangStarr here, and look at the larger commercial radio picture. If you’re talking about satellite radio then yes I’m pretty sure that’s what’s happening right now on Hip Hop Nation.

Everything comes to the light eventually. The universe will deal with Solar.
It’s unfortunate Guru’s legacy had to be tarnished with this bull. Rest in Power and Peace.

Also, can you convince Mister Cee to post his special throwbacks at noon? Listening to the GURU tribute and he’s going hard!

RIP GURU, Solar is going to hell for this one. NO dying man focuses on dissing people. when a person is dying, that’s when they forgive everyone and wish they had made peace with people. the words so formal “my ex-DJ” why not just say premiere? did he hate him THAT much? i doubt it. now we will never know the real truth, but believe me live has a way of dealing with this sort of thing and Solar will not go unpunished for what he’s done. no matter what solar does, BOTH Guru and Premo will forever be known as Gangstarr!

I am saddened to here of his death. I have always felt he was the most under rated MC in the game. I remember when I was a teen, when I here a new song by this man it would remind me why I love this music. Dwick reminds me of a better time hip hop. Can you imagine heaven with pac, big, pun and guru. What a freestyle session. RIP my man. Once again hip hop is dead.

SMH at that letter. Its disgusting to think that someone would create someone else’s last wishes. But if i’m not mistaken in order to give proxy you have to have witnesses right?!? So there should be two or three other people in this world who was there when Guru (in sound mind) wrote or dictated this letter or any others that gave dude power of attorney.
All in all though…its a sad situation. RIP Guru

1st of all I want to say R.I.P. to Guru, one of the hardest that spit on that mic.
Now I want to say this whole situation is totally “effed” up! After I read the first few lines I knew Guru didn’t write that letter. Anyone on their deathbed would find the way to forgive ANYBODY that may have cause them grief if they want to be judged in the afterlife. I can’t see him & Premo having a fall out so bad he would take the beef to the grave. I’m sure someone would have heard why. (Media, blog, Miss Info etc.) And that statement “the SOLE founder of Gangstarr just don’t sound right because every press release Solar give he makes that statement. I don’t know about anyone else but I NEVER heard Guru say that or even trip over it for that matter. Again, I hope Guru finds peace & the real facts come to light. & to that bitch Solar, u fcukin around with people dying, keepin them from fam & friends over money & fame? What comes around goes around & ur going to hell with gasoline slacks with dirty bombs in ya pocket. Ya heard!!!

RIP Guru! Gang Starr forever. One of the most prolific MC’s to bless the mic. You’re royalty.
Preme- hold your head. You know that the legacy can NEVER be denied.
Solar- you are the same person that said Guru was tweeting from the hospital- when he was in a coma. So of course we don’t believe you- you need more people. Clearly, it seems as if Solar has to insert himself in here because there is nothing tribute worthy in the Solar x Guru music. To allow such pettiness to be put out there while keeping the details concerning the actual illness and fall out between Guru and everyone is only self-serving.
Good thing us hip-hop fans are able to remember how great Guru really was.

Either something horribly foul went down between Guru and Preme or Solar is truly a sick person.
With that said, I know it’s not a popular opinion but there is a chance that these are Guru’s words. It’s terrible but there are people who take grudges to their grave and from what i hear Guru was not always the most pleasant person to meet. It’s hard to look at some of our heroes in a diminished light, but they’re human and none of us our flawless.
At the end of the day though, I’m separating the drama from the music and celebrating the work that Gang Starr left behind. Music that not only gave me a deeper respect for hip hop in it’s rawest form but that also led me to a true appreciation of jazz music. Cats who frustrated the shit out of me by putting albums out every few yrs instead of every few months but always made them well worth the wait. Thank you for music that has inspired and will continue to for generations to come.

I met hommie before the break up
and in our convo he dropped a jewel about karma
on me
it goes like this:
” what Goes Around Comes Around ”
” Though not, when done to someone who really deserves it”
Guru was a well grounded person mentally Witta few twitches
nobody is perfect…. Replaying his voice in my mind and trying
to fit the words don’t mix that letter’s very fishy “no more said “

Its such a shame that in this time when his fans should be reflecting on his entire legacy and enjoying the musical contributions he has given us….Every one is focusing on this letter. This letter hopefully fabricated was done in poor taste. It just seems more or less that “it” was laying out his buisness plans and not much of a farewell letter, in fact if he was coherant to write this letter that portion shouldve been handled in a will. R.I.P Guru.

He was gay, and probably died of HIV complications, (not that you can’t die of HIV and not be gay).
Guru called Solar his “PARTNER.” He’s gay. Let him be gay, and remembered as a gay man.
Just like J Dilla didn’t die of lupus, he died of another MORE FAMOUS autoimmune deficiency disease

That’s so crazy, I was listening to ‘Full Clip’ this morning and wondering where the beat played during the Big L tribute on Disc 1 was from, and now here it is. Amazing.
Rest in peace to the gifted, prolific one. Let’s keep it positive and celebrate the man’s life, and keep faith that is anyone is doing dirt, they’ll be exposed as frauds.

It’s sad because if this letter is true (which I don’t believe it is but let’s give bitch ass Solar a pass) it tarnishes Guru legacy alot to me. I don’t see how in death you could curse the name of the man you built your legacy with. People could care less about the Solar joints. But heads know Mass Appeal, DWYCK, Full Clip, Manifest, Discipline, etc.
And isn’t it weird and shady as shit all this info is coming through Solar’s people. No comments from family or Premo who is the one who let it be known about Guru’s condition in the first place.

What I heard was the Guru had MJD (Magic-Johnson-Disease). Which kinda fits with his weird relationship with Solar and how he lost all that weight and got ‘cancer’ at such a young age.
Don’t hate, his music is still the bomb no matter what he did in his private life.

I cannot accept that the man would praise solars name 8 times by my count, belittle premo so scandalously, and not even praise his loved ones. I mean damn his son got only one mention. This is some petty bullshit and thats the reason nobodys buying it. Damn this Solar cat gotta piss all over a legacy, like that, but like the saying man every dog has his day, and this motherfuckers no different. Karma is a bitch.

The original GANGSTARR will never die.

There is no way Guru wrote that letter. He had terminal cancer and then was in a coma and then he wakes up to either dictate or write the letter. Impossible. He would not be able to speak let alone move his arms. I just reread solars tweet there is no way Guru spoke those words after being in a coma. He would not be able to speak. I’m sure he was on strong medication because once cancer goes into the terminal stage it is painful. I doubt he even woke from that coma. There needs to be an investigation because Solar is straight up lying.

hi Miss Info,
what a letter….
since everybody says its a fake, imma try to see it in another point of view.
On his death bed, he went on writing these words about Primo, real hard words, considering what the duo represents in music, that if you think basic hip-hop with mc and a dj, you gonna think Gangstarr like at least 80% of the time as an example.
Those two dudes who’ve been doing so much good classic music together then stopped, and im pbbly not informed enough, but I think Primo was still down to do some Gangstarr joint again, saying its up to Guru.
So yeah thinking about what he wrote in the letter, talking legal stuff about saying his name, actually going on comparing what he did with Solar and what he did with Primo, off course its his point of view, but still kinda unthinkable to even compare those 2 part of his life, musically at least.
Off course fans dont like changes and everybody bitched on him with Solar, cuz all we wanted his him and Primo back, without considering Guru’s feeling, but the words used in the letter would mean theres really smth super strong negatively between Guru and Premier, and it never surfaced that much I guess.
What also bugs me either its fake or not is the main will to make a public use of a letter like that, its pretty useless to anyone but Solar i think, I actually never heard of him until Guru put out some work they did together, and if the letter is fake, it would mean that hes even using his death to make ppl say his name…
But yeah the letter make it look like smth has to be justified..
iuno sounds really sick..
we lost a legend, hes gone for real and press statement should have not mention any letter cuz its kinda out of place, wont make him come back…
and to finish (sorry for the long comment with many english mistakes !) Solar mention Guru made the statement from his own mouth, so somebody else wrote it, and since apparently only Solar was able to see him in the hospital, he kinda doesnt help ppl believing him I think.
anyways take care Info !

according to wiki, he didnt link up with Premier til after the original ‘Gang Starr’ group broke up. “The group was founded by graffiti artists Horne and Elbo in Boston, MA in 1985 (then known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee) with various producers, such as Donald D, J.V. Johnson or DJ Mark the 45 King helping out. In 1987 and 1988, Gang Starr released three 12″ vinyl singles on the Wild Pitch label.
In 1989, the group split and the only member willing to continue under the name Gang Starr was Guru.”
I’m right there along with you. That’s just bitter hate to be talking very ill about Premier, unless there’s something beyond the industry ills that he’s claiming that he had to get away from. Even that allhiphop interview that he did he sounded pissed…

May the pain of his loss be softened with the thoughts of the music he made and the lives he touched.
