Remy Ma Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison
Posted by Miss Info under crime , not good for hip hop[53] Comments
wow….that’s a really long time. Without condoning her actions, I still wouldnt wish that on anyone.
From the Associated Press:
“Remy Ma has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the shooting a woman outside a Manhattan nightclub.
The state Supreme Court sentence was handed Tuesday to the 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion.
Remy Ma, who could have faced up to 25 years in prison, was teary-eyed as she heard the sentence.
She says last summer’s shooting was an accident; an appeal is planned.
Correction officials say they called off her weekend wedding at the Rikers Island jail after the groom — fellow rapper Papoose — showed up with a handcuff key.
Remy Ma’s lawyer, Ivan Fisher, denies the key could be used to unlock handcuffs. Papoose isn’t charged.
Fisher says the two still plan to wed.”
UPDATE: Sohh’s Thomas A. Harden has more details from the sentencing….wow, the Judge pulled no punches. Not sure who Pap was talking about though.
“Today, Remy wept as she pleaded to the judge. “I stand here today as Remy Mackie,” she said with tears in her eyes as she asked for leniency. “I’m a loving wife, mother and loving daughter and loving sister to my brothers and sisters.”
Remy also addressed Barnes-Joseph. “I apologize for not saving you from your physical and mental scars.”
Before delivering the sentence of 8 years, the judge gave a statement.
“I’ve learned Remy is an intelligent and charitable young woman,” the judge said. “She’s overcome a difficult childhood. Her music has inspired people in need. She’s loved and has support from her family.”
After the complementary remarks, the judge turned her remarks to accountability.
“This is somewhat of a pattern. This is not the first time she has been engaged in a violent act. She never took responsibility for her actions. This has nothing to do with rap it’s about the actions of one person. Remy is an extremely angry young woman who feels the rules do not apply to her.”
After the sentencing, Papoose got into a shoving match with a court officer. “All y’all want is f*cking money,” he yelled. “This is bullsh*t.”
Remy’s mother and others, who had painted Remy on their faces in red, had to restrain Pap.”

Damn thats so messed up.That bitch spun her story to the media about them being “childhood friends” when Remy only knew her through another rapper. Remy did wrong but she doesnt deserve 8 all the letters her fans wrote and the judge didnt even care shes evil locking someone up away from their child till they are 16. I get Makedas the victim but she did steal from Remy who had a son to provide for. I pray her appeal is sucessful as she has shown remorse for her actions.

I always here “hold your head up ” why? If someone committed a crime they should do the time. I mean when I hear that its like they the people that say it have no regard for any of the victims. Hopefully the time will be well spent with redemption forgiveness and a new look on life

First of all for all those people who feel that her sentence was harsh, Lets offer her an alternative. How about letting Makeda pump two hollow point bullets in her stomach and see if she walks away alive or dead. Whatever lead up to the shooting, for Remy looking back now I am sure it was not worth the 2 0r 3 grand she claims was missing. She has had to spend 100 times that for the lawyers and I am sure she is not done yet. As for her whining now in court about the justice system taking away her job, her child and her freedom… please that fool did that herself when she pulled the trigger. I dont see her as a role model for anyone except another idiot who wants to throw away their future over a hot temper that is out of control. Most young people today are struggling with the dream of becoming an entertainer or a rapper especially and when people like her as well as others are glorified for their thug like image they ruin it for many. As usual there is no real talent there to go on and they usually have more ego than common sense that is why they end up like this. Trying to act hard in front of a bunch of spectators is BS. THose same people you front for won’t be doing your time for you.I dont buy it for a minute that it was an accident because you dont leave a friend bleeding after an accident w/o calling 911. Besides if you are a young lady you don’t need a gun unless of course you run your mouth too much. I dont like to see anyone go down but she has to be held responsible for her actions. God forbid the girl would have died, then what? More begs for sympathy..please give me a break. The jails are full of people with hot tempers and we all know that they wish they could undo what the can’t. Her fiance better chill or he will be in there next Whether her wore the key on his chain or not, no one but a dummy would bring contraband to a jail. Duh!!!

Yo i could dig feelin sympathy for her but its not like they gave her 8 years for stealin a snickers… She straight up shot somebody… Somebody who was supposed to be her homie at that and really tried to kill her, then fled the scene and got into an accident. To be honest she probably deserved more. She wasn’t worried about her child when she gave home girl a wet t-shirt

Everybody going to jail these days. The shock factor of going to jail may start to become a mockery.
I mean if Paris Hilton can do a stretch (hardly a stretch but, u know) All these celebrities kids ain’t going to fear jail no more.
Just like when kids grow up and don’t fear a spanking the same knuckle heads are gonna grow up and not fear jail.
Sad for Remy Ma though but I hope she can cope.

Even though I didn’t think she should have gotten off with nothing but 8 years! Yeah its money or better yet a better lawyer. Like 50 said I will kill you and my lawyers will call it self defense. I really don’t blame the judge or the system I blame Remy’s lawyer. I mean think about it when this story broke Rem’s lawyer claimed she didnt shoot her then they changed it to an Accident. Thats what killed her whole defense case.

Remy Ma committed a crime and now she has to do the time. I knew her thuggish image was just a facade and for entertainment purposes. I don’t feel bad for her because her sentence was light for the type of crime she committed. Some people have to serve 15 years or more for attempted murder. I feel bad for her son. Jail is a soulless and compassionless place to spend eight years of your life. Even 1 day would be too much for me.

@everyone….yeah, I definitely believe in do your crime do your time, but that doesn’t keep me from also feeling bad for someone’s waste of potential. She did it to herself, and she will be punished. But its a waste.
And unfortunately, with both crime and punishment, there are always innocent people who suffer on the outskirts.

The line that stuck out the most was when the judge said, ‘it has nothing to do with rap, it’s about your actions…’. It’s tough when stuff like this happens because it’s so many sides to the story.
Bottom line: Remy let temporary emotions get her in a permanent bind. And really $2-3k is not that much. Hell, the handbag she had it stuffed in probably cost that much. A good ass whoopin’ could have easily served the same purpose, plus it would have been much easier to overcome in a court of law anyway….
I’m by no means much of a Remy fan, but 8 years of jail is rough for anyone, especially for someone who’s used to doing whatever the hell they want while having a little bit of money. Hopefully she’s rehabilitated and not aggravated (no Jesse Jackson) when she gets out.
All in all, the name of the game is accountability. Let’s have some.

Yo, everyone on here talking about Remy deserves jail and she deserves this-You people are retarded!! Do you realize what jail is? It’s the most deplorable, degarding place that anyone could ever face. It’s hell on earth and these judges throw our people in these cells as if it’s nothing-it’s actually message to all of us. They are telling us that our lives (Black people) mean nothing and our celebrities don’t mean nothing in the bigger scheme of things. Miss Info, I’m surprised that you don’t touch on any of these issues.
I also see the Feds be up on websites now posting comments and trying to play mind games with us!
No Black woman deserves to be imprisoned and locked away from her child. This was obviously a crime of passion and an accident! Makeda was on Miss Jones this morning and as she told her story it became more apparent that this whole situation was blown out of proportion and it was an ACCIDENT.
She deserves to be punished for having the loaded gun but there are other means of punishment, other than incarceration. What about a lengthy probation sentence, a fine, community services, and many others.
We have to realize that we are not animals and do not deserve to be locked in cages…and no Makeda did not deserve to be shot but does the justice system really care about her? They just wanna lock another Black person up. It’s disgusting. Wake up people!!! Wake up! and don’t believe everything you read on these blog neither!

Now Remy will have to face the “real” thugs in jail. She’ll be in there with the most hardened criminals she’s ever seen. Most of the women who are incarcerated are repeat offenders with absolutely nothing to lose. This reality is going to hit her hard. I pray for the victim Makeda, but most importantly, I pray for Remy and her son.

Blacklove i totally agree with you. Remy did wrong but i do think Makeda isnt telling the complete truth. For all they people who are making disgusting comments about what happens in prisons such as rape and people abusing their authority then ask yourself what if it was you. Remy claims to be innocent and says she just got caught in a bad situation which i personally believe. What if that was you who was innocent but people lied about you, twisted things and turned the mainstream media against you. Would you want people speculating about what might happen to you, saying you should have got the max i very much doubt it. People will be like saying the “do the crime do the time ” BS innocent people can and do go to jail for various reasons like corrupt cops, unfortunate circumstances/situations, jealousy and people hating on you and wanting revenge. People should think twice about posting comments such as “bad boy03″ because it could be you in that situation.

Its like we says the man the system them them them but when are we gonna take accountability for out actions .Look at the appearance that were made Remy didn’t sound like a person that had a case pending that possibly could have here doing 25 years .But you if she had to do it all over she would think it out

8 years is a long time, a long time for anybody. But for shooting someone with hollow point bullets TWICE in front of a club? They should’ve added 2 more years just for that kind of ignorance. Carrying a gun is pointless, if the bitch really wanted to prove herself, she could’ve just knocked the other girl out…there’s never a need for guns, especially if you’re a public figure with a decent life. That;s what wrong with our society today, instead of solving confrontations with a fist fight, people gotta use guns and shit. Chill wit all that nonsense.

Shooting someone because they allegedly stole from you is way out of line. All that crying during sentencing was too little too late. Personally, I cannot stand being around angry people, they can loose their top anytime. The victims says Remy went through her bag following the shooting, found nothing “surprise” and left her bleeding. What kind of human does that? A monster no doubt. She’s supposedly the tough rider no? Well let her do the time. She can handle it. Her son may be better off without all the anger anyway.

@Missinfo,
you never responded to my post.
Do you not feel you have an obligation to address the underlying issues here?
We don’t know that Remy shot that girl. Remy was on the radio sayin’ she didn’t shoot her and that she didn’t have “a jury of her peers.” Come on…the jury pool was from the MPD and SOHO and Tribeca. How many of Remy’s peers live in those areas? What about Makeda’s story? Does it add up? Do you really think someone as sharp and intelligent as Remy would do something so bonkers? What about the overall issues…the plot of destructing Hip Hop? Are you afraid to address these issues? Is it because she’s not Asian? I’m just asking because you claim to love Hip Hop but I don’t know what you stand for…is it only to dish dirt or do you have a genuine love of the culture? There was no gun found-yet Remy is found guilty on gun possession? We have to separate the “artist Remy Ma” from the woman Ms. Remy Smith. No one deserves jail and Makeda played to the media talking about they were “childhood friends,” then she on Miss Jones talking about they knew each other 6 or 7 months!
We hate on each other so badly-it’s pathetic.
This is a Black woman, mother of the earth, and someone else’s mother. Those judges are out to get us. We don’t know what happen because we can’t get justice in their system-(see Sean Bell verdict).

@ Blacklove great post you made some really good points. I totally agree with you like were is the actual evidence unless its being withheld from the public then i havent really heard any. Screw that wack lawyer Papoose said for her appeal she will have a different one. About Makeda playing to the media it wasnt just her it was her own FATHER who said to the ny post Makeda used to watch Remys kid and that Remy messed up his life just to get public opinion on their side.
Remy Ma & Smith are two different people like yeah she raps about getting high and violence but shes also dealt with topics such as abortion as well. She’s also a sister, mother and wife. Jason’s 7/8 years old so she was pregnant when she was 19 still living in the projects but now hes at a good school living in the suburbs Remy isnt going to put all that in jeapordy. Remy is a good mother and her and her son dont deserve this.

Rappers and people in general do stupid things all the time that they know is a crime.Rem’s lawyer said she shot Makeda.Sean Bell has nothing to do with people committing crimes. If you don’t like how the legal system is then vote and serve your jury duty. Jury of Remys peers would not be rappers the same way it would and should not be doctors cops murders drug dealers they would all just let each other go. Since we know that they are out to get us then we should be making moves to counter that The first thing would be to hold people for there actions and for us to take 100% responsibality. You can always pick up the transcript from court.
