Rare Footage From 2pac’s Infamous Bathtub Photo Shoot
Posted by Mikey Fresh under Videos[7] Comments
Pac caught a lot of flack and controversy for those infamous bathtub photos, but I guess that was the point. Urban empire unearthed this lost footage of the behind scenes from that photo shoot, dubbed “Becoming Clean”. Famed photographer David Lachapelle, did the camera work (and his crew), right after 2Pac was released from prison.
after the jump, check out the end product and some commentary from Lachapelle.
DM: I feel that a lot of your work emphasises on beauty in people, regardless of colour or size. One of my favourite pieces of your work is “Becoming Clean” with Tupac Shakur amongst others. How was it like work with him?
DL: Tupac was great, he was very sensitive and is truly a good person. I wrote to his mum when he died and she sent me flowers and gave me his last song, “Ghetto Gospel.” When we did the shoot, he had just come out of prison and every shot has a reason, it’s never random, so this was the idea of the photo shoot, him becoming clean. He had given this interview when he was still in prison and he really opened up and was so honest. I had read it and thought it was so truthful so for the work I did with him, there was this idea of washing away and rebirth. And we did another shoot where he posed as a slave on a cotton field. They traced rapping and rhyming to “call and repeat” during slavery time in sugar cane and cotton fields to pass the time. It’s on the Hotel Lachapelle book. Tupac came to the shoot 2 hours early, which was very unusual for a rapper. So I wasn’t ready for the shoot and he didn’t care. He reminded me of my black friends whom I went to art schools with, he was so cool, open-minded and chill. He wasn’t judgemental. Then later on, I found out that he had gone to an art school. He left behind a big bag of socks and underwear because he had just come out from prison and never picked it up. He died shortly after. I still wear his socks sometimes (laughs).

Always wondered what the purpose of this shoot was. Images like this reminds me (us in general) that Pac was a pop music icon, not only on the hip hop landscape (I’m sure the rock and roll hall of fame won’t agree with me but one can dream). He was also a sex icon in the same way Mick Jagger was for rock music back in the 60’s and 70’s.. Even more staggering is while all this was happening (same with Big at that time) is that he was a young 24(!). INSANE! Much love for whoever dug this up.

I think you mean he was an old 24-25… these dudes had wisdom and presence beyond their years!!
This is funny because I was watching Poetic Justic just last night for the first time in years and I was stuck on Pac, how talented he was and his presence!! If he would have lived he would have been a great actor! He never had a chance to really hit that second level…
If him and Janet would have actually hooked up had she no been married for 10yrs lol that would have been the dopest musical couple… Far beyond Jay-Beyonce!

Pac was a busy star but some how his busy seemed like he saw the clock and was getting as much done as he could before it expired even down to that last car ride picture…
Even this footage seems bigger and more crazier than other photo shoots!!

yeah i agree! i was too fuckin young back then had no perspective or even clear consumption of it all… i was obsorbing the daily pac dealings like a crazy busy kid minded filled with shit…. I READ THAT VIBE INTERVIEW 5 TIMES BACK THEN and didnt put it all together until i was like 20…
Pac would hhave been more than anyone could ever expect if he was here!!
I cant believe another black man killed pac just says alot about our fucked up community!! I always said Pac was killed by a lucky gangbanger and Big was killed by a tupac groupie

The sad part about it all is that the black community excepts this clear entry into the homosexual realm. I am real! 27 blk male who 2 fell for the pac craze. That was when i was a child. Now i see it for what it was … a trap! no way “a real black man” would have allowerd himself 2 be degraded in such a manner. another clear cut case of whitey tryin 2 sissify (feminize the black male). open your eyes. 2pac was just an artist! . we was and forever will be an entertainer rest in peace. P.s wow dude you still wear the mans prison issued socks? talk about gay. and did you see the pure excitement on this pedorast face when pac began his “submissive posing”?
dont comprimise your masculinity for some gold draws mane
