Pusha T on Not Making MTV’s #HottestMC List: “I Blacked Out On A Whole Crew By Myself”
Posted by Andy B. under interview , quotes[23] Comments
Pusha T isn’t one to hold his tongue. Like his G.O.O.D. Music boss before him, the Wrath of Caine rapper griped about MTV’s Hottest MCs in the Game list during a phone call with BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Semtex. Pusha said he believes he should have been on the list for the impact he made in 2012, not only for his contributions on records like “Mercy,” but for his war of words with a certain group (we all know who, don’t we?) The subliminals came in bunches:
I blacked out on a whole crew by myself. I don’t belong on no list? And I’m talking ’bout everybody, I blacked out on peoples’ favorites! I had MCs denouncing their fan base, coming back with records talking ’bout, “Well as long as my chicks love me.”
Yughhh! Pusha gave credit where it was due, though. During a rant about the order of the list (Kanye should have ranked higher; Future absolutely deserved his nod), he listed Drake as his third Hottest MC. We respect that.

Ummm but to be honest the majority of the time Push “Blacked Out” like on “Exodus” he did the immediate media reverse and down plays it. Only recently has he really embraced it but w/ little reply back from his foes that hasnt kept him “hot”.
Outside of some stand out verses and OK mixtapes he shouldn’t be on this list before lets say T.I who got busy on mix tapes and a solid solo album.
Pusha needs that album to drop and hit hard.

Agree with you on T.I. List is off. Way off. Should’ve been on there for sure. His mixtape a and album was off the chain

I know this is not how the list is compiled, but if you took the best 5 verses from each person on the list plus Pusha for 2012, and you line them up and compare, there is no way Pusha T is not top 5. None.
And just because Pusha isn’t blasting Wayne and Drake in interviews doesn’t mean he is back peddling. He is on some real rap competition type shit. You aren’t gonna see him with a camera rolling around New Orleans asking street dudes about Wayne’s fake Blood ties. He’s gonna put it in a verse, and move on to the next one.

Pusha to me is in the Jadakiss & Fabolous field. Insane lyrics that flirt with mainstream success but just never seem to really cross over.
Regarding his beefs. No he need but be all over doing Live disses from NOLA but if you say a verse or drop a song and say isn’t about a person when it clearly is then that discredits you a bit.

I’m not asking for excess Drama but the flip flopping was always odd to me.

I’ve loved Clipse from the get. Copped all their albums. But I don’t know. If he is going to be on that list, he has to differentiate himself from the whole coke dealer turned rapper sh*t, bragging, and materialistic stuff and just write dope rhymes. Kendrick is #1 for a reason. Told his story and you can’t help but listen. I’m tired of one liners and hollow sh*t. Push is capable of being on that list, but if “Millions” is supposedly a song of one of the hottest MC’s, then there is a lot of work to be done

yup, all the whining just gives these BS lists credibility.
Artists “hate” award shows, until they win, then they complain about every other award they miss thereafter.

This list would be greater n taken more serious and edgier entertainment if it was judged by Real Mc’s and the Top Dj’s.
One thing on the “blacking out ” issue theyve pretty much brushed off beef and diss records as “those records dont sell” and/or “aint no money in beef”, which became everybodies catch phrase, so they’ll just black ball you n label you as not workin well with others. Which turned them into everybodies guilty pleasure when those records come around n we salivate over how hard them jabs were which goes to show you times have mothafuckin changed.

I agree with you. There standards are corporate. This has very little to do with skill and more to do with popularity which doesnt always equate to skill. Having a hot hook and beat dont make you nice. For instance started from the bottom beat+hook serious. But what did he really say?

He really said that he started from scratch with his rap career and had to prove to everyone that he was capable of doing it. Also, that he’s had the same team supporting him from the beginning and will continue to do so.
Drake has some shallow hot hook+beat tracks, but for the most part, he is saying something, IMO

Every rapper is gonna feel like they deserve to be on the list, be higher on the list, be #1 on the list but the part that surprised me about Pusha’s interview is him putting Drake in his top 5. Between his & Kanye’s interviews this week it makes it a little more clear that Pusha’s issues are with Wayne and Kanye’s issues are with Drake.

What did Drake do to Kanye for him to say something bad about him?

You could make a good argument for Pusha. I think about 5 different rappers have a case for the list. My main issue with it though is how is Drake #5 when every person on the list, with the exception of Nas, has him on their hottest or 2nd hottest single of the past year.

What is going on with all this short term memory? Have yall fogotten that Meek was killing 2012? 2 Chainz was EVERYWHERE!! Ross killed 2012 until he got sick…..Kendrick has been in everyones mouth all year. Chief Keef, Trinidad James (late in the year) and ASAP Rocky round out the MOST TALKED about for the year 2012. Lyrics has nothing to do with hot. Pusha was talked about in OUR (hip-hop) circles but his songs weren’t killing anything (outside of mercy and don’t like). To be hot is to have spins AND publicity…….outside of Hiphop. To be honest if Jay had a few solo hits he would have killed 2012 merging that with his baby news and Concerts. How can he not be HOT when he sells out 8 straight concerts!! He was hot WITHOUT a major song. When it comes to Future I dont know much about him but I damn sure heard his name ALL YEAR. More than Drake, more than Big Sean. Nas was also hot and arguably had one of the best albums and hot singles…..singles, unlike MOST of the list who was hot because of features. Should Kanye be on the lists? Yep, who was talked about more in 2012 than Ye? From his music to his kicks to his relationship with Kim. He needs to be higher.
