ope picture. It’ll be interesting to see how commercially reliable a demographic this “internet soldier” species is. I mean, folks have searched, for quite some time, for the “new” music (rap and otherwise) economic model. Obviously, everyone toys with the internet to differing degrees. Still, I think Budden is a case study, for a lot of different artists, on “whether an identified group of internet fans can keep an artist’s career economically viable.”

A very important question.

I mean, the reason why Budden is a perfect test case is because he really has no fanbase outside of the internet. Although 50 Cent uses thisis50.com brilliantly, he was already a commercial juggernaut and was guaranteed to sell “X” amount of albums. 50 was more like Prince, when Prince decided to go all digital–a brand of his own, who didn’t necessarily need retail.

Budden? Not so much. Maybe if he had released 3, 4 albums on Def Jam.

So it’ll be interesting to see if Joe’s internet soldiers are more like me–”love the music, won’t buy the album”, or if are actually willing to buy something, for the sake of quality artistry, that they can frankly get for free.

I’d say that Buddens’ record sales implicate a lot more than his own popularity; it’s testing a new economic model for record sales.
