Pharrell loses an ear, and fights a puppet…what have you done lately? ; )

I enjoy fine art along with my pop art, and even though I don’t pretend to be an expert on the modern art scene, I stay up on the big stars and find my own personal favorites (like Ruscha, Prince and Yue Minjun). But some things just seem abstract for abstract sake. Yi Zhou is an acclaimed globalista who makes big multi-media art installations (not my fave medium) and even showed at Sundance…but aside from Pharrell’s C.I.A.-ready knife skills, the best part of this piece is the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone (especially the scratchy record-player white noise). On the other hand, this clip below, of Pharrell fighting Flat Eric (the puppet from French producer Mr. Oiso’s famous Levi’s commercial) looks very promising : )
After the jump…you can see the original Flat Eric Levi’s commercial…

This has to be an homage to both Skateboard P, Salvador Dali and Vincent Van Gogh. The cutaway from P to the image of the ear, looming large and extending like a bridge, recalls Dali’s surrealist’s paintings. The way P wrapped his ear in the early seconds of the video definitely links the image and his actions to Van Gogh who, supposedly, cut his ear off as a present to a woman. Recently it’s been speculated that Van Gogh may have cut his ear off because he was intoxicated by absinthe.
Gogol’s short story The Nose also comes to mind, just because the ear is localized and becomes an entity on its own, even tho temporary.
When we are taken into the ear we see images of P’s head which suggests the inner ears identity.
I dunno… it just seems like the artist who made this was dick riding. Maybe he found a muse in P. An ear, of course, depends on a head to hear. It takes a mind to list. An ear is a bridge. Maybe thats the lesson.
