Chance The Rapper was one of several winners at last night’s 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards as he took home the award for “Innovator of the Year.” To top it off, Chance was presented the award by Pharrell, who obviously showered him in praise straight from the teleprompter, but also went off script to show love to the 24-year-old rapper, activist and father.

“To call Chance The Rapper an innovator almost feels like an understatement. He remains independent, releasing music whenever he feels like it. I know it sounds crazy, but it made him the first streaming-only artist to win three GRAMMYs. And he dresses like one of my favorite video game characters, Mario,” Pharrell said. “I just have to say, this is not in the teleprompter, but I also think we have to make some noise for him being an amazing dad. He completely breaks the stereotype of young dads. An amazing father.”

After sharing a warm embrace with Pharrell, Chance reciprocated the love in his own heartfelt speech.

“Thank you Pharrell for, number one, being a positive influence in my life since I was young. But also for giving me the confidence — I don’t know if you remember this, a long time ago we were at a studio and I was telling you, ‘I think I need to sell this third mixtape so I can get my nominations at the GRAMMYs and blah blah blah.’ And you were like, ‘You don’t gotta do that,'” Chance said. “Just with small passing, things that you say, I don’t know if you know how much weight it carries with people, but thank you.”

Chance also shouted out James Brown, Ray Charles, Prince, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé while accepting the award. Watch below.
