Suge Knight was sentenced to 28 years in prison, after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in L.A. County Superior Court on Thursday (Sept. 20). The 53-year-old former Death Row Records CEO was accused in January 2015 of running over two men, killing one of them, Terry Carter, after a confrontation on the set of the movie biopic Straight Outta Compton. Knight will get credit for time served while awaiting trial, around 3 1/2 years. The Compton native will also be on parole for three years after his prison sentence.

TMZ reports Knight’s sentence is stiffer than a normal voluntarily manslaughter charge due to his prior felony conviction in 1997. Of total 28 years, five years were added due to Carter’s killing being deemed a “serious and violent” felony. An additional year was also added because the SUV truck Suge was driving is considered a deadly weapon.
